Have been "MMOing" for 8 years now and nothing out there at the moment is pulling me in. After a long stint in WoW (before that it was SWG , DAoC, CoH, EQ and EQ2) I've tried AoC, WAR, a smattering of random free games and going back to the old games I had played before...need something new.

In the past I've been a hardcore player in both PvE and PvP...now, with work and life the way it is I'm looking for something that is a bit more casual, something that will allow me to enjoy the finer points of the MMO experience (questing with people, meeting new friends, enjoying and participating with the online community), the stuff the single player games just don't have...not looking to have to log in every free hour just to remain competetive with those around me.

Have been a Tolkien fan for a long time and did try the game way back at launch...was a busy time in another MMO though, so I truthfully did not get a good taste (barely made level 10 in LotRO).

So...looking for a new MMO, one that is forgiving if a player needs to remain casual a bit, one that has a good community of people who enjoy the game and the lore, and most of all, one that is fun without feeling like work.

Is Lord of the Rings this game?

And is there a free trial anymore? Would like the chance to see the game before I spend the cost for the software and subscription fee.  Are there buddy keys? If so....where could you find one, and would I be able to play the trial (as a free trial or a buddy) and keep that character after I upgrade the account? I assume that would not be an issue, doesn't seem to be an issue in other MMOs.

Anyhow...thanks for the help.

Like you I am a long time MMO player (since SoV era EQ). I had read the Lord of the Rings a couple of times before playing, but playing LoTRO has turned me into an enourmous Tolkien nerd.  I've even read supplemental stuff like the Unfinished Tales now.

Based on what you wrote, I think there is a very good chance that LoTRO will be just what you are looking for. It feels more like a real place than any other MMO I've tried.  Because they are "limited" by the lore, Turbine has been forced to create one of the most cohesive games in MMO space.  The writing in quest dialogues is also much better than in most MMOs.  The prose is solid, and the stories that emerge from the quest arcs are often compelling.

The community in LoTRO is also noticably more mature than in most MMOs I've played.  It's shocking to see chat in a crowded zone consist almost etirely of folks discussing the game and getting groups together.  I haven't seen a single argument break out in chat in Eregion (the new zone that veryone is funelled through to get to the Mines). I suspect that WAR and WotLK stole away all our asshats.

However, LoTRO is not for everyone.  If you are the type of gamer that thought having "kindly space demons" join the Alliance was awesome, and really helped your sense of immersion with WoW...a game of subtle pleasures like LoTRo might be lost on you.  LoTRO is the type of game that you "get" and love, or that bores you to tears.

Now is actually a good time to join, the servers are hopping from MoM. If you want a trial account that will let you sub for $10 a month (or go lifer for $200) and get you some free stuff in game, send me a PM with your e-mail address.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, insight and help.

Looking forward to checking the game out and seeing if it's for me.

hmm... people unsubscribe form every MMO, every day... what's your point? (not to sound rude) Just because one person doesnt like doesnt mean everyone doesnt like it... try it yourself and decide for yourself   :)

Very true. I just unsubscribed from WoW yesterday. And yet, I think that game is going to be OK without me ;P

I agree it sounds like you might really enjoy the game.  Myself I came into the game not having read the books, liked the movies though.  The game inspired me to read the books.  I was shocked when reading the books at many details from the books made it into the game... Names of obscure people, places, even lines of songs became used.  Good luck and hope you enjoy the game.
