Wow Inquiry

Hello Fellow gamers!

Question about WOW from an old Vet of MMORPGs. I'm all grown up now, you see. With little time to spare in my adult life. image  I know from playing most MMORPGs, except UO, that soloing and not grouping will not get you anywhere.

I have about 2 hrs per evening when I arrive back home from work to play. Will I be able to solo in WOW? Will I have to group? I understand that two hrs an evening is not much, but I do not expect to rise through the ranks quickly by doing this, but I do expect a "Sense of accomplishment" with in those two hrs. Is this possible in WOW?

Go ahead...tell me the truth.. I can take it. image

Thank you to all who reply.

WoW is very solo-friendly.  Even priests can manage to solo without much trouble.  You may want to try to form a group if you want to do any instanced dungeons, but for the most part you should be able  to enjoy the game soloing just a couple hours a day.

(my opinion is based on playing a couple of characters to about level 15 during the stress test...at higher levels it may be much harder, I dunno)

Agree. As a beta tester and mmorpg player - since old school UO, I have to say that WoW will rank as the most solo friendly mmorpg on the market, in my opinion.

As a bonus. . .it has a very high and broad fun factor as well. I play on the PvP server.

    Hehehe :)
2 hours a day is not so bad, in my opinion. Many people wish they would have this free time (wife/gf/husband/bf, kids...)
So don't worry about it, you should be fine :)

The answer to your question is yes and no. Yes, you can solo. You can level by soloing, and you can have a lot of fun. Can you totally solo? No, you cannot. Not if you want to do quests. Some quests are impossible to do alone. It appears that WoW is gearing some of the quests not only toward team play, but "diverse" team play. Meaning, a group of 5 warriors will have trouble with some quests, while a group of a warlock, warrior and mage will kick butt.

In the stress beta, I alternated between soloing and team play. You will spend a lot of time alone, because the place is big. That two hours will go fast, trust me. You will get stuff done, and you can travel around, but your pace will be much faster if you team up with people.

Another reason to team up is the way the missions work. For example, in CoH, when the mission is done, everyone gets XP and you are done. In WoW, everyone who has the mission has to accomplish the mission goal. If that is to kill a certain creature, or get its head, or get 12 spider legs, or a book, everyone has to do it. You rack up XP trying, but you are covered by the strength of your team.

When your character becomes more advanced, you will be able to travel around. I didn't get to ride a horse, but I rode a bat, and the zeppelin, many times. With the hearthstone, you can zap back to your home town, sell your stuff, get new skills, and then ride back to where you came from. Or you can run.

My last point is that people in WoW help each other out. One of the main reasons is that there is no penalty for doing so. If you are the first one to strike a blow at a creature (assuming you are solo), then you, and only you, get the XP when the creature dies. So if I am running by, and see that you are about to die, I can hit the creature and kill it, but you get the XP. It is very common for people to help each other out, to buff someone while running by, to do a quick teamup to help fulfill a quest, etc. I jumped on and off teams all the time, it works out great. Unlike in CoH, where teaming is essential to the game, and you wind up playing with the same team all night, WoW allows for both.

Trust me, you are gonna love it!!!

since im interested in gettin a paladin, ive been mostly hangin out in pala official/unofficial forums, and lots of lvl 50+ palas have soloed all the way ^_^ so it seems it is possible to solo without any probs =)

big reason why im plannin to play WoW is that you can solo, since i dont like to b lookin for grps for hours to b able to lvl, i like to get high lvls and quick, so yah i dont play 2 hours per day, more like 13-14 hours ^^

    WoW is gonna rule ^^

Hmm.. somebody named penatration.. who writes in yellow while italicizing everything that wants to join WoW... in that case..

WoW is a horrible game, go play something else like FFXI, very solo-friendly. In WoW you can't solo at all.. you have to group for everything and you usually spend about 2 hours finding a group. Stay away from WoW if you want a good game.

I've beta's a few mmo's in my time and still have an old UO account. I would agree with everyone here that solo' play has never been more user friendly than what it is in WoW. I was able to reach lvl 17 mostly by solo'n myself I actually found it harder to lvl with others in a group only because, with the exception of guilding, you always have that one goof ball that gets a train cause he just doesn't know how to work in a team and gets everyone killed. All the little quests that WoW has, in adition to the big ones help close the Gap GREATLY.

A lot of peeps complained that the little quests were dumb, cause there are a lot of go kill 5 of these go kill 3 of these and bring backthe body parts for my magic potion quests. while they had no BIG story like some quests I liked them. I liked them, cause they gave you xp for the kills on the way to the spawn, they gave you xp for the kills of the quest, and they gave you xp for completeing the part of the quest were you bring junk back. It's a very nice touch.

I hated in DAOC were i had my oh oh its lvl 35 go back to get my class quest. and in the mean time i had one or two quests to do but mostly it was lets go kill wolf men and GRIND........ to level 34. know waht i mean?

Any who thats my $0.02 and take it as you will.

That is IRONI! Haha. Becuse in FFXI you have I mean HAVE to team all the time, and soloing is'nt any good after lvl 10 or so. Becuse you can kill many minor lvl mobs easy or you can kill less higer lvl mobs, that is wery hard. And when you finaly get a team you get 1 or 2 lvls, and you hve to do it all over again. That is my opinion after playing the game. Other players don't have trouble finding teams in FFXI, i have. Deal with it!

Yes as soon as i hit 15 it is impossible to level. I would spend 1-3 hours finding a group and then as soon as i found one it would die or i would have to go.... The game just got boring and tedius when all you can do is group!

Games Played:DoAC, EQ, CoH, Lineage 2, Planetside, and Shadowbane.

      Hello,

Thank you all for your response.

Yes, I do not like MMORPGs that you must group in order to advance or to experience new "things" in the game. FFXI, EverQuest, SWG, AO, Asheron's Call... just a few to list..  EverQuest and FFXI being at the top!

do you mean level 15 in WoW?  they have a level curve that makes it slow down on levelling as you get to the higher levels.  I got to 18 in a week and that's not even playing too much.

You have never actully played the game.  Have you?  The stress test alone was enough to prove that someone could get to level 30 with in one week playing it 6 hours a day while soloing.  I'm a pure soloest from UO.  Thats all I'll ever be.  Get a life and stop spreading horrible rumors.

I have to say WoW is the best MMOG I have seen in a while that a Hardcore grinder and a casual player can bolth get alone in. Next to CoH this game is the second easyest game that can be almost somewhat considerd a console game play style. I was in Stress test got 8 diff class/race to lvl 9 and finaly decided on a Dwarf Cleric got him to 15 stoped lvling and started on Traidskills. Ended up getting Fishing up high, and was working Mining. *real pain to find the ore* Trade skils are nice to in this game some are time consuming but if you lean toward somthing like skinner you have no problem. If you only have 1 hour a day and looking for a game this would fit that to.

One of the reasons that I'm looking forward to WoW is the fact that you can solo AND the grind is painless.  Although, yeah, the higher level you get the harder it becomes to solo quests, and instances are specifically designed for groups, the solo experience in WoW is great.  And all classes can solo.  The difference comes in how fast you can kill, not whether you can kill, equal or higher level mobs.  So, yeah, WoW passes the wife needs help/have to put the kids to bed/take out the garbage/ and prepare this report by tomorrow test.  I'm looking forward to it big time.

Hey, PENETRATION , not sure if it was mentionned but Blizzard has tought about those who doesn't play the game so much. They invented :Rest Time.

When you log out your character in an Inn or a Big City, You gain rest time during the time your character isn't online. Rest time is cumulated so the less you play the more rest time you get.

A rested state makes you're Experience gain to 200% from fighting mobs (will stay to 100% for quests)

I don't have the exact numbers, but for exemple if you stay loged off a whole week, you'll be able to grind almost a whole level twice faster.

Ive read instances where beta testers have soloed from level 1 to 60 without ever grouping once, except for maybe PvP, but that doesnt count since you dont get exp from PvP. If a quest requires a group, they would just skip it and find other quests.

Honestly I found very few group oriented quests in the first 20 levels in the human area. Only ones that did require groups was to kill elite mobs, and I think I only did three of those.
