Darkfall's melee combat

PezheadPezhead Member Posts: 149

As i haven't been following Dark Fall religiously,  I am curious to know, how is the melee system going to work?  From the gameplay trailer, It looks kind of like a Dynasty Warriors style hack and slash without the cool moves and over the top flashes, but then we didnt get to see the UI either-or, will it be more of a fighting game style, where you have 100 different moves atyour disposal, and during the fights, you can block, or "guard impact" or even duck or jump.

It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay.

Certainly you will be able to jump and strafe in combat. Melee will be done from a close, third-person view. You will be responsible for unsheathing your sword, swinging your sword, and aiming it at your target (which, in general, should be a moving target). If you miss them, you miss them.

Consider trying Mount&Blade, an RPG with combat touted to be similar to that of Darkfall.

Actually, that sounds rly cool,  in which case my biggest concern is latency issues-which is pretty much an issue in any online game.

Spellborn might give you a general idea how it will work. You can unsheath your sword to attack, sheath it, etc. I played Mount & Blade as well

Wait and see if they post more beta tester reactions on the site

It's FPS style, similar to DDO or Oblivion.

You will also be able to manually move your character to avoid magic and range attacks.  Anyone can do this, but just wanted to add it as it will be a part of a melee dps char's game.

Player skill back into combat!!!  Can't wait.  Actually being able to use the terrain and outsmart opponents.  Not just lock on + 1 + 2 + 3 when range attacks are taking 90 degree turns in midair to catch up to you.

Im curious on how the keys will be set up for these actions.

Well what we do know is that is MUCH different than other mmos regarding the UI and how combat is handled.  But it allows for player skill to come into the equation which is a very good thing.  Many people raised on WoW will shy away from it.

I actually read a post that said "why didnt DF go with the target + lock combat system that WoW uses?"...people are so brainwashed to thinking that WoW is the only way to go.....easymode games will always get the most subs but for those of us wanting a game that challnges us....DF is that game

Right on. Experienced pvpers realize this is the source of "spiking" whereas several players all TAB to the victim, then spike the victim with their most powerful spell

Due to lack of realtime dodging, players had no choice but to absorb all that damage. This is why zergs became so deadly in MMORPGs.

For years I kept saying we need realtime dodging so player skill can be accounted for properly. Dodging gives lowbies a chance to survive combat with a vet (in WoW, you miss and get near 100% hit be a vet).

For years FPS enjoyed this already and it will be so great to see mmorpgs get this

During closed testing in Spellborn I was pleased to see this feature. perhaps one of the things they got most right. But darkfall will really shine being such a pvp centric game

So then I take it if combat is going to be like Oblivion, does that mean also like Mount & Blade? No fantasy MMO tops the quick/fast combat of those two games.

I had a question on this subject. Initially I wanted to play an offensive caster who wields a sword / shield. I thought using a shield and possibly sword would raise casting time and lead to more inturruptions but that it would still be possible. What I've read, however, implies that you must carry a staff to cast offensive spells, are we not allowed to use a shield or weapon while casting?

....noone here has played it yet they already know how gameplay will be.

    Trolls = Hardcore
    Fanbois = Carebears

The only posts I read in threads are my own.

Some are drawing conclusions from what they've read.

Are you getting tired of trolling or something?  That wasn't one of your best efforst.

They say there combat will be close to mount and blade but that is a very bold statement. I really really doubt that it will be the same as M&B but I really hope so.

Personally I think it will be closer to Oblivion than anything else which isnt too bad either.

Drawing my conclusion from watching videos and most from the new review from the mmorpgitialia site, you will be required to equip a wand in order to cast spells.

From what I've read, yes you do need a staff out to cast magic. So in this case you would need to switch from your sword/board over to your staff to cast spells. In the 17min trailer, it shows two people fighting on a cliffside next to a waterfall. If you watch closely when the one backs up he pulls out a staff right before he knocks him off the cliffside with a push/wind (just a guess) spell. It happens around 2:45 in the video.

The ONLY bad thing about this type of combat is dealing with, like in all fpses lag kills.

but im shure they thought about that and took steps to revent server side lag, client side lag is completely out of there hands, so remember no torrents when u play

Yep the devs have described it as a cross between oblivion and M&B for combat and then gameplay also like UO and SB etc.....all in all a top notch pvp experience

Ok, so then how complex will the combat itself be?  A simple hack and slash? Will you be required to block?  Do melee weapons have a range factor(as in polearms have longer range than daggers)? Are there move "combos" or is it like a simple set of moves like, "slash, stab, super slash etc."

I haven#t read anything about specifics, but from what I saw in the videos, it looked a lot like hack and slash for Melee and FPS for spells and ranged weapons.

I didn't see any blocking going on, nor did I see a range difference in weapons, but then again, that sort of thing is highly difficult to make out in the movies we saw so far. I've seen no combos or the like, but there IS a skillbar with skills on it, so I should guess that there are some sort of special attacks.

Will have to wait to try I should think.

     You do block manually.

Then it mustn't have come across in the video. As i said, those things are difficult to make out in the videos provided so far. All I saw was a lot of the same animation of swings going on.

Good thing if it has blocking though.
