Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

She's claimed me again!!A bit of help for a lost soul if you would.

FFXI has grabbed, beaten, and chained my mind again. After a good year away from an attempt to play it and.....4 or5 years I think from first quiting I feel the urge to play this game again.

Story time......

It all started about a week ago when walking through a mall and hearing, of all things, the Ronfaure Forest theme. Amazingly I did remeber it after only a few bars of the meleody. That made me think of FFXI. Thinnking made me look it up online. Looking it up made me want to play it. ((It was music playing randomly on a comp at Gamestop))

So after getting fed up with evey other MMO, Yes you WOW, I'm returning to start anew in the world of Vana'diel.((except Lineage2 that games great just too many bots everywere))

I tried playing again about a year ago but stopped for no reason that I can come to in my mind. Well, really I wasn't be very social at that time and I guess that just kills a game like FFXI.

I'll most likely return to the Pandanonium server, if my minds not changed before hand.

A few things I'd like to know(( so that this post will have a meaning besides my story))

any thing a returning person should know?

and

anyone willing to help out a renewb in FFXI?

PS how is Pandamonium population wise?

Re: Pandy server. WSIMike will be with you shortly probably =)

Your story confused me alittle bit so i'm not sure if you quite a year ago or 4-5 years ago.  So i'm not quite sure what to tell you.  Perhaps you can put it a bit clearer?

Shanree of Pandemonium reporting for duty!!!

    /salute

    >.>

    Heheh hey there..

Well first, welcome back to Vana'diel :). We've done much to keep her in good shape in your absence. Well, except for Suplyndmnd... I hear through the grapevine he's been a slacker {mega boss} >.>.

Unlike me... I'm dutifully holding my post in Whitegate making sure the folks outside the Residential Area don't get out of line.

    ... :-p

    Anyways!

Pandemonium is, as far as I can tell, doing just fine population wise. We're not bursting at the seams, but we're not empty either. I think the population is fairly average... Around 1500-1600 or so on average. Kind of a nice balance, IMO. I've seldom ever had trouble finding parties when I've really wanted one and the competition for rare spawns is reasonable.

Plenty of people to talk to and so forth. I'm in a couple linkshells myself, one of which is brand-new (one of those deals where a friend is like "here.. take this" and hand you a linkpearl and run off. That's pretty  much literally what happened in this case). However, I have a main LS I'm in that's very social and friendly and helpful; so I could get you a linkpearl to there to help ya sorta get a hop back into the community.

Just have to promise me you're not a psycho axe murderer... Actually... that would be really cool. Just to see what happens when an axe murderer is unleashed on an unsuspecting linkshell... >:D

Ahem... In any case.. I always say:

Pandy is dandy... but liquor is quicker...

    HA!

    ...

    Actually.. I never say that.

(sorry... too much caffeine tonight, I think)

But seriously heheh... If you want to check Pandy out, look me up in game (Shanree) and I'll come out and do my best to embarass you in front of Altana and everyone... even the rarabs.

Oh also.. I notice you also have played Lineage 2. I'm an on again/off again player of that game myself.. Have a 69 Bladedancer, a 52 Spellhowler and a 50 Phantom Summoner. The BD is my main. I'm originally from Hindemith, which has now been merged with Gustin to become Phoenix. They've actually really started cracking down on the bots... with live GMs no less. Sounds very un-NC like, I know.. but it's true.

Funny how so many people who play FFXI have also played, or do play, Lineage 2... or vice versa.

    So in any case...

If I haven't totally scared you off.. Feel free to look me up in-game. These days I'm either leveling Monk,  working at getting my MNK AF pieces, dying a lot in Besieged, or dying a lot in Campaign on my DRG to get enough rank and points for Cobra Unit gear.

Welcome back, again, to Vana'diel and... hope to see ya around!

    /salute

I am also thinking about returning, I purchased the game at release and played a couple of months but the lack off english speaking people killed it for me, that and me getting owned  by mobs 1 level higher then me. Has the game gotten any better about that?

It's wierd... I've seen several people mention having trouble with that. I started at release also and that was never an issue. JP players helped out quite a lot in tougher quests, etc, but I never found it a hindrance to finding parties with English speakers, etc.

Maybe it was a server thing? Some had fewer English speakers than others or something... Or maybe it's purely what time zone people play in.

In any case, I would say you're still going to find JP players around, but there are more than enough English speakers to go around as well.
that and me getting owned  by mobs 1 level higher then me. Has the game gotten any better about that?

Well... it's not so much about the game getting any better about that :). It's more about figuring out and then adapting to what you can or can't handle.

In the first 10 levels or so, depending on what class you are, you can handle anything from Toughs (from 1 level above) to Decent Matches well enough. Also the mobs in those levels are geared toward solo fights.

Once you get past 10 or so the mobs become scaled for a group; not so much solo - though a strong and well-prepared character can solo them. I was soloing Tough Goblins in Tahrongi on my DRG/WAR in the early teens.

But even as a group, part of the game is learning your targets and knowing what you and/or your party can take.

Here's an example - and I'm not saying this is what you did, but it's an example of what I said above...
A friend of mine tried the game and, at level 1, immediately went after a rarab. Something you just don't do at level 1, and he wiped. Came back out... tried again... Attacked the same rarab and died.
At that point, he got fed up and cancelled his account, claiming the mobs are impossible to kill.
I suggested he check the mob first and he said he did... even though it said "very tough" he felt he should still be able to manage it just fine.
I suggested he try the easier mobs because he needs a couple levels under his belt before taking the rabbits on. He scoffed and said that was retarded.. He should be able to kill anything out there at the start.
From that point on, he's made fun of the game because it has bunnies that are impossible to kill.
Ridiculous, yes... but that's one example of people who - as typical - make easily detected and corrected mistakes and then blame them on poor game design.

    Question....

Which is a better sub for a Paladin, a White mage or a Warrior?

This will decide which class I level from 1-30 first.

Warrior.  It's required when partying so you can use Provoke.  Paladin = Tanks.

This may be a bit ambitious in the beginning, but you can always choose to be PLD/WAR by day and BLM/WHM by night! If you eventually decide to spend more time playing FFXI, you'll notice that most veterans have multiple max-level jobs. FFXI lets you play multiple jobs with the same character and you can choose to tank, deal lots of damange, or wear your Traveler's hat whenever you want. As a subjob for PLD, I agree that you should work with PLD/WAR. :)

If I chose a mage for a reason other then the reason I was choosing between WAr or Whm I'd just as well go back to being a RM

Oh yea and I don't think I've said this yet but a major reason for me coming back ot  the game is to make it through the story of FFXI

..... and I'm up to lvl 9 on a War called Altrus

Good luck dude,i also have a few accounts on pandy server, who knows one day you may run into one of my players.Thing is this ,i might mention before your too far along. The FFXI story is HUGE ! i would strongly suggest you try to find some static players. The reason being is you would enjoy the whole game more.

Having others just outright help you will not be fun. They will be in a hurry to get you through whatever they are helping you with, and not enjoy it the same as you.It will be a "follow me" from one point to another ,you won't even be looking at your map or even know what you are doing.Having a static group will mean all of you are there for each other to the end.It wil be really really hard to find 6 full static players but even 4 would be good if you had the main jobs covered like tank/heal/dd.Having 2x ninja static tanks is the bomb, just food for thought.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

You do? What character(s) are you? I'm sure I've seen you around at least :-p

And as for the FFXI stories... Indeed. All quite deep and all quite epic. I'm still trying to get through all of them ><. Well, except the first one; I finished that from the Windurst side. But yeah... Epic.

I mean... It's SE, what do you expect? :-p

Indeed. Try to experience the stories/missions "as intended". The first time I fought Shadowlord I was told to stand back while someone else soloed it (as a 75 character, it can be done). It was neat.. but I got none of the sense of accomplishment from it. So I made sure to be involved in the fight the next time around.

Just take it as it comes.

There's plenty of game to experience besides the storyline aspects.
