I was thinking of picking this up later this week, (mainly after the holiday), and I was just curious as to will I still be a viable player to the community comming in a year and a half after release. I was thinking of comming in as a elf minstrel as I prefer playing healing classes. Any suggestions on class and race would be helpful as to a pointer into a populated server

A new expansion just came out so if you are looking to get in the game now is the time to do it. There are many new players now and older players rolling alts for the two new classes. I started not too long ago and rerolled as a Warden and I am having tons of fun.
I think Minstrels are the top notch healers of the game, but you can also try a Runekeeper which is a nuker/healer hybrid type I would say. Not died yet with a Runekeeper healing the fellowship, so I guess they are pretty good at it too. As far as race goes, pick what you like, I don't think it matters much at all.
I am on Silverlode server and it has a healthy population, not packed to the hilt like some of the other servers, but I can get a fellowship going pretty easily for the group quests I need to get done.

yea it really is the best time now. i re-subscribed yesterday and im having a lot of fun!
Yes, now is definitely a great time to start. I haven't seen this many people on since the game was first released. And there are hordes of low-level characters running around, thanks to the new classes in the Moria expansion.
awesome then I guess I will be getting the game more then likley this wednesday then. I'll post name and server here when I get everything set up and running if anyone would like to get together and group sometime
Elendilmir is a pretty hoppin' server. Got a decent mix of gamers and RPers, so there are lots of people at every level.
Previous played: SWG (pre-NGE), DAoC, CoH, Anarchy Online, DDO, Champions Online Beta, LOTRO, GW2, SWTOR
With so many re-rolling and sure enough new ppl trying it out now, this is the best time to start IMO.

Best time to start. Landroval and Brandywine are two of the higher population servers. Landroval is the unnoficial RP server. Any race that you can choose for minstral is fine. It comes down to which racial ability you like best.
Too late? No. This game is different. There doesn't seem to be a large population of players rushing to get to the end. And people are always running around on alts, especially now since they've added 2 new classes.
If you don't want server queue try Vilya. Low population needs some luv.
Not to late at all, and join the brandywine server.

Just don't do pickup groups. I rarely do as there are some people who take it all much too seriously. However, I have found many laid back players who enjoy playing just to play.

Sorry to hear that. Most would say this game has the best overall community out there. I play on Gladden and the community there has been very good overall. I agree many long time vets are diving into the new content fast, but that's to be expected I think for those that have been doing some of the same content for quite a while. There are many however that are looking to still do older content as well as new, you just need to be a little patient and find a nice crew to run with.

I have never EVER encounted anything like this. You just go up with a crappy group of people.
I have, it's why my wife and I rarely group. Always end up in a group that clicks the continue button before we've even read a single word of the quest dialogue. It only take a few episodes like this to infuriate people who are trying to enjoy the lore/story of the game at the expense of impatient people who just want to get to the end for the shiny reward (ie. WoW Syndrome).
Funny, I'm on Vilya and IMO there are *too many* people in the new zones, and it kind of breaks the immersion. Hopefully it will thin out with time, but I'm having a tough time grabbing mobs from all the hunters crawling around. I know people need a healthy population to get groups going, but when I first ventured to the entrance of the Mines, it felt like Graceland. Sometimes, when I'm off in some remote area, hunting mobs for hides or searching for mining nodes or rare spawns, and I'm all alone with an epic vista laid out before me, it feels ... good!

I think all servers are a little like this due to Eregion and the Moria entrance being the only paths through the new content. Once you get past those it eases up a bit. That and the newness of the expansion will create a surge of people for a time. It will get better.

Landroval is a great choice. There is a large population and a lot of easy going players who enjoy the journey.
That really helps when making new characters. You will find idiots though on any server and also people who try and rush through the content.

pretty much... LOTRO is the best community I have experienced in MMOland. Sure, you get your occasional asshole, but for the most part, its smooth sailing. Don't let the minority speak for the majority

The OP topic was if it is worth joining LOTRO altho it is over a year old. I think it has to do with LOTRO having not enough content so that every "fan" already has 3-5 level 50 Alts and knows every quest already.
The experience I had was not "jerks" it was players rushing through content half asleep because they did this content for the 4th or 7th time and could not even imagine someone might do it for the FIRST time and wanting to READ what the quest is about.
In fact it was players like you who simply could not imagine someone else's situation.
Anyway, i will jump in one of the new MMO's to avoid this next time.
No matter in what game, there are always Hero to lead the group. The battle if you want to call it battle, it will be finished within 5 minutes anyway. So, it don't matter if the Hero kick you out or you left the group.
True. WoW did bring in some really nasty asocial people into the MMORPG genre.
But you have these people in every game now. So it's not something new.
You should try roll onto a RP server. Usually the more mature and more social people tend to roll there.
People on RP servers are usually less likely power gamers (altho they are there too ofcourse. They are everywhere).
Next to that. Try to find a nice guild (in this game called Kinships).
A guild in a MMORPG makes all the difference in making your game experience just that much better.

There are always new players running around that I see, even more so now. I run a small kin but still get new players quite often.
