There's a few reasons, the mains ones are probably that it's free and according to some people it's supposedly "very playable".

...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.

Well it's the same old tried and true SWG/SOE defense.  If it doesn't work or is unpopular, blame the players.  Damn them all for not liking our broken, ever-changing product, that seems to remove things they enjoy, and fail to deliver what they've asked for, even when (in many cases) it was promised.

Yeah considering 5 years ago I ran SWG on an AMD Duron 900 with 512MB ram and an ATI X700Pro 256MB and lagged only in places like Moenia or in large scale pvp events, now I have an AMD X2 6000 (3.2GHz?), 4GB ram and an 8800GT 512MB and I lag in EMPTY spots like Danth's MO, Kashyyyk, Theed and Restuss.

City of Heroes got a graphics/engine update in issue 7 2 years ago which they added PhysX physics and I don't experience lag in there at all.

Even after trying SWG we are apparantly still wrong about how awful, and empty the game is. The only differences between TR and SWG is that TR had more people playing and NCSoft still shut it down. SOE won't shut SWG down because they can sell it with their Station pass, but we all know most of the Station Pass players are playing EQ2/Vanguard. I assume though in the future either SOE will shut old games down as new games are launched, or raise the price of Station Pass, most likely the latter like they have always done.

Yeppers. $OE's answer to falling subscriptions in the past was to raise the Station Pass fee, which they did twice in less than a year a while back. Instead of trying to attract more players (or even retain them) with a lower Station Pass Subscription fee, they will more likely jack-up the fee and fleece the current Station Pass Players.

Yeah I'm a bit disappointed in NCSOft's actions with TR (and AA in the past) and it worries me to how they'll treat CoX since that game is losing subscribers fairly rapidly, however I also think it's retarded for SOE to keep dead games alive (Matrix & Planetside) and dying games (Vanguard barely has both legs and PotBS is a sinking ship, pardon the pun), only game they have with decent strength left is EQ2.

I've been running through Hoth quite a bit since it was released and yes, there are periods where there are lag spikes (mostly during transition periods where the server needs to spawn NPCs for the next phase and despawn previous phase stuff) I can't say I've found it unbearable.  It IS a rather NPC intensive instance - at points there are 100-200+ NPCs active at once such as during the first phase.

Clientside, there are also points where there is a FPS drop, usually when there's alot of NPC activity in the area but I usually don't drop below 20FPS, even with AA, AF and Bloom all turned on.

How does the shutdown of TR say anything about what will happen to SWG?  They're operated by two different companies...

TR has more subs than the NGE has, about 30K.  Yet they are killing it.

    Let that one sink in.

The ONLY reason the NGE wasn't killed well over a year ago is the LEC/Bioware sequel, LEC is keeping it alive only till the new game comes out.

Anyone who has ANY illusion of the NGE living past the release of SWTOR is delusional.

Let's be honest, you'll use any excuse to try backup your claims that "SWG is shutting down!"  You've been doing this for three years now.  You're the boy who cried wolf.  Over and over again.

So you think that SWG has 30k+ active, subscribed players? Did $OE release the numbers to you? LOL! In your insulated corner of Chilastra it may appear that SWG is thriving - but the ghost servers tell a different tale. The low population is serious enough for money-grabbing $OE to actually do free character transfers. Even the Smedster has said it remains to be seen how SWG does when TOR goes live, which may include sunsetting the game.

The games are very different, if anything TOR will draw from WOW/AOC/LoTR crowd. Nothing that has been released yet about TOR excites anyone I game with in SWG.

SWG will stay open and have continued development as long as it is profitable for SOE/LEC. And you have zero idea about how many subs SWG has, you can only guess.

I agree with you that those people that have been claiming to know when swg was going to shut are more than annoying.  They're like the uber Star Trek geeks who dress up in Trekkie costumes all the time, either at conventions or in their day to day lives.  They make it hard for regular people who like Star Trek ( /raises hand) to admit it because of the actions of the few that take it to the extreme.  Its the same thing with the swg "vet" community.  All the cohesive, logical arguements that are made by most vets get drowned out by the lunatic "fringe".  In reality, theres only about a dozen or so of those types that are active here and other more mainstream mmo sites.

All that being said, theres a few points I'd like to make.  First, I still shake my head every time I see someone, like that Badgerbasher guy who was a senator, make claims like swg has more players than it did before the nge and that there aren't as many dead servers as others say there is.  Its impossible to have more players when all but 3 or 4 servers are light or very light, and even those 3 or 4 struggle often to hit medium.  Sorry fanboys, but 4 active servers out of 25 does not equal more players than pre-nge.  Second, anyone that thinks swg will last long after SW:TOR is released is fooling themselves.  Many of the people who still play swg are Star Wars/sci-fi fans more than they are fans of swg.  If the new game is any good, then swg will die very quickly.  The writing is already on the wall when John Smedley used the phrase "sunsetting swg".  Unlike its other mmo's, swg is heavily controlled by another party, LA.  While I don't think swg will be shut down immediately upon release of the new mmo, like I said, if its a success and people like it, swg will have seen its last days.  Finally.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

    What else is new?
Am I, personally, optimistic regarding SWG's future after TOR comes out? Not particularly. But to say that TR's shutdown is any kind of harbinger for SWG's future is so stupid it's almost funny, considering they are run by two different companies facing two completely different sets of circumstances. And the three years of "SWG SHUTTING DOWN IN THREE MONTHS" has been absolutely ridiculous.

I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

I agree that if it has been a three year crusade it is pretty pointless but the truth is for I think the first time I can voice my opinion that this game is going to die.

I would not be surprised to see it live a year or so but only so long as TOR isn't out, if for no other reason than the fact that you can play far too many games without encountering the problems you do in SWG. As noted by another player above play lotro and see how many actual lag spikes you get in comparison to how swg has always been and that is mostly industry standard.

The only reason I will even give this game that much time is SOE has always baffled me with how long they keep totally dead games alive it wouldn't surprise me to see them strip out the SW lore and still continue to pump this broken product out to the masses.

Either way it's light's out for this game with the economy as it is we will more than likely see the day when these types of decisions are too expensive to make for companies.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

When did you become the all knowing?  Did SOE release sub numbers to you?

Let's be honest, you'll use any excuse to try backup your claims that "SWG is shutting down!"  You've been doing this for three years now.  You're the boy who cried wolf.  Over and over again.

Now thats a bit rich , The pot calling the kettle black comming from SOE_Obraik :)

    cheers

Feel free to elaborate on how this is a "pot calling the kettle black" situation...

"When did you become the all knowing?"

SOE_Obraik quotes as the very same "all knowing" .

Firstly, I think it's rather cute that you added the SOE in front of my name.  Very original there ;)  All knowing?  No, I don't post numbers that I made up and call them facts.

"Let's be honest, you'll use any excuse to try backup your claims that "SWG is......"

SOE_Obraik does this to the point of being a joke/fanboi and is hardly worth a read .

Do I really?  I'm heart broken that you don't read my posts anymore...

"You've been doing this for three years now."

SOE_Obraik has been doing the same , not only here but on many other sites .

I post about a game I enjoy and still play.  I don't waste my time posting on forums about games that I no longer play.

"You're the boy who cried wolf. Over and over again."

SOE_Obraik is no different , just taking the oppsite view .

This makes no sense.  Please explain.

It sounds very "Pot calling the kettle black" to me .

    cheers

Of cause you cant see it , Your SOE_Obraik :)

    cheers

PS I'm sorry if I upset you i did not intend to , I do read some of your posts its just I take anything you say with a very large grain of salt .
