Freeworld: Is it real?

Hey there everyone. This is going to be my first post here, and I hope it doesn't sound too harsh ;)

I just checked these renderings of the "final human male player model" for Freeworld, and honestly, they are ugly. ::::07::

I started looking around a bit more, after I saw the Screenshots, an I've got to say, the whole project looks somewhat mateurish to me. Some game, that a few students are designing/coding in there free time.

Any of you there ever saw some Screenshots of the Ultima I - Remake, that was done by a bunch of fans? (Don't know if it ever was released though) It looked a lot better, and ways more professional.

I also visited their homepage, looking for information on their company or stuff. But the only thing that came to my attention was the "Make a Donation"-Button at the bottom of the page... ::::03::

Excuse me, if I missed some vital information on this subject, but as far as I can see, I think this game is never going to be released. And if, it will look like, well, crap. Who's going to pay for this game? I sure am not.

Somehow the whole project seems to me, as if some guys made a homepage (actually got someone to make a page) with a list of average, current-MMO-features (they got the best of both worlds somehow...) and downloaded a fan-fiction from the web, using it as a background by filling in their race-names. Then went and got a "Create-yer-own3D-fantasy-world-in-5-minutes"-program, rendered some real bad landscapes and made some even worse looking character models with 3DStudio Max (or whatever). Why? To ripp off investors? I don't know.

I'm not trying to say, that a game is all about graphics. But today, a serious game project (especially a MMO-project) has to be accompanied by some, at least state of the art graphics. Not just because that makes a game more fun, but because it somehow is an indicator, on how serious and professional a project is. And sorry again, this project doesn't seem to have the slightest sprak of professionality in it.

If anyone actually ever really played one of there announced tests, please be welcome to drop by, and try to convince me, that this project ain't one big joke.

Sorry if I got anything wrong, and insulted someone related to this project (for sure not intentionally).

    Freeworld: Is it real?

    Nope, it's a game...

Asfar as what you said, you are correct in that it is being made a by a bunch of guys doing it for fun. That is why it is called FreeWrold, because it is free to play.

Sure, it doesn't compare with the big guns of the industry, but they are backed by millions of dollars.

But, there is no reason to put those guys down when they are doing their best with their limited funding...

If you don't like it, don't play. No reason to go around slamming a few guys trying to do their best and doing a fine job with the limited resources they have.

first off i would like to point to the title on the left hand side of this forum.

    <-------FreeWorld Admin

yes, I'm one of the creators of FreeWorld. We make this game in our spare time and NON of us get payed. We do this for the love of MMORPGs and I'm sorry if we can not live up to the multi-million dollar standard set by the industry.

for a group of any guys to make a full scale MMORPG is a HUGE project. I would like to challenge any of you to make your own MMORPG without funding. Its not impossable....but i think most people will find that it is a task that few can do (no matter the quality)

we may not be the next EQ2 or WoW but we have a growing fan base and there is a place in this market for our kind of game.

thanks for at lest taken the time to look up information on our game. KEEP FREEWORLDING!!

I have quite a bit of respect for these guys. I likely wouldn't play because I'm willing to pay for a big budget mmorpg or two, but this is definitely a huge project to be doing without backing. One thing you guys could use is a model artist, maybe put on a contest or recruit someone from one of the design schools with pizza and beer ? Then again I don't know what your engine is capable of. . .  Maybe have a proof-reader go over your webpage too, its surprising how much a few avoidable spelling errors can lend an appearance of unprofessionalism.

    Cheers.

we are always looking for new help.

you don't have to be the best at what you do BUT we are looking for people that have some kind of skill. So, you must have examples of your work. We are willing to teach a little, But you must have a good foundation in what ever skill you are looking to improve.

FreeWorld is designed to work on even low end machines.....we do not feel that people should be forced to buy a new computer just to be able to play along.

I too enjoy high-end PC games and i love the big budget games as much as the rest of you do. But the honest truth is, not everyone has the money to afford the computer parts or high end monthly fees.

FreeWorld will not be for a lot of you...but i know there is a place for the kind of game we have to offer.

FreeWorld is a labor of love.....not the love of money like most of these other guys are doing, But the love of the game. When we are done we may not look the best, but i know for a fact that our game bring a totally different game play style to the table. We are not just another MMO clone.

Even if you don't plan to stay playing...i would love to invite everyone of you to our next testing phase and see what all of our hard work has done.

    thanks again for your time,

As I already said, sorry out to you guys.

I didn't know what your project was exactly about, and that you were doing it in your free time. Therefor kudos from me too, for playing with the big boys, and good luck for the future of yer project!

My whole post was built on the assumption, that this was a standard-project like all the other mmos out there, so please don't feel affronted by my post.

Everyone needs to keep this in perspective too. Beautiful graphics may get you to try something, but if the gameplay sucks, do you stay for the eye candy? No, of course not. However, graphics that are sub par, but backed by gameplay that is truly unique and fun WILL keep you around.

FW has so many new concepts that will add to the fun factor that you just have to keep an eye on it. At least I am :)

    thanks a lot Malianea.

one thing we do bring to the table is some very very new game play ideas.

no more point and click combat!

    no more level caps!

    no more class restrictions!

    no more character limits!

and much much more.......the key to the FreeWorld project has always been our fan base. We as gamers know that only Gamers know what they really want in the game play of a game. So we always listen to there thoughts (IE post in the official forum http://forum.freeworldonline.com/) and try as hard as we can to change things to what they think should be changed. Sometime do to the size of our team it may take us a little longer to do BUT we add new and improved content to our game ever other day.

i invite everyone to come by and chat with us in our forum.....if you want to really be part of a gaming community that makes choices in the way a game is made, that is FreeWorld.

if you have any questions or comments plz feel free to email me at draconus@freeworldonline.com

this is one of them games you would just have to play to find out how good it really is. They added so many new things in the last phase and I'm very excited about there up coming magic system. I wish that the main stream game industry would take notice to a project like this. I think they could learn a few things about what kind of game play people really want.

Well Well seems people talk about  FreeWorld that no nothing about it but they are learning form the FreeWorld Admin, I am a tester of FreeWorld and have been for a year now I for one love this game I have seen other mmorrpgs and I would rather play FreeWorld then those others, all tho the others do have the money to do as they wish FreeWorld is done out of love of gaming.

I have seen a lot of changes in the game since I started testing and playing FreeWorld the races and monsters change and get better as the game develops as well as the ground texture. I think you should at lest try and play the game before you make harsh descions on it.  Clyde and the rest of the developers deserver a pat on the back they work on the game in their free time and do not get paid for it I think FreeWorld can stand up to the top games out there I say come play FreeWorld then you can say what you want.

I have (p2p) played *alot* of MMORPG's. Basically all the big ones, and most of them I beta tested as well.

As soon as I started playing, day one, hour one, I was having fun. Realizing that the game was barely more than a working engine, that was saying alot. I was already having fun and the best was yet to come.

Then one day I made a little suggestion about something, and a couple days later it changed. I have beta (&alpha) tested many games, but never have I had this much power to control the end product.

With other MMORPG I could write a 2 page email and send it to the appropriate people, and maybe if I made a really good case, and/or they really liked the idea... then they would pretend they were doing something similar to that all along and take full credit for the 25% of my idea that they used.

Which of course I never cared for credit, just to improve the game. It's just the hoops that you have to jump through, and the little thanks that you get.

With FreeWorld this isn't the case. You actually can effect change... and not be made to feel out of place while doing so.

...and the game is totally fun.

I could care less if many people pay to play FW, cause I know that I will, and I'll bring my friends with me. While all the friends that I've made while playing FW will be there too.

SO SO true derek the friends that I have made on FreeWorld are some of the funniest friends I have and the way that dev's treat the players is great and you are so right they do listen to us when we make suggestion and some of them actualy get put into game.

    Hiya Guys

I'm Lightning from freeworld also a dev there. I run the scripting team and can't spell for toffees to tonight :)

Well what can i say about freeworld..

Well Drac is a workoholic ;) and he has a whip to go with it.. (just joking) *Ouch* :D

Freeworld is far from complete yet and because of that we are always updating something. One thing i will mention , i don't think drac did, was that we have 3 differnet types of graphics so that users can choose( depending on the type of pc they have) we have low, mid and high graphics and so that should help most users to play.

Kd has also brought in a updated version of the scripting lan, which means we (scripting crew) can tease users better and drive their minds wild in trying to complete quests :) but thats not all we have the ability to do alot more with it. Like team quests, Guild quests possible but also you will be able to complete certain quests on your own.

Just a note: I have seen two games which i won't mention that started off as we have with nothing backing them and have become good  games and successful and i have no doubt in my mind that freeworld we also become as successful when released.

We are always open to users suggestions to improve the game :)

game play is a very important factor if i play a game or not. To me a even more important factor is community. The FreeWorld community is a very close bunch of friends. The developers are always around the boards answering questions and taking note of suggestions. I for one will be watching this game close and waiting impatiently for next phase.

to anyone out there that would try to judge a game without even trying it. you guys need to grow up and give things a chance before you say bad things about stuff you don't even know about.

Ahh Yes, FreeWorld is very real.. I have to say I love the game and the whole development team.. Thank you Bomarr for recanting on your post about FreeWorld you didn't' have to do that, and you did, it is appreciated that you took the time to do so... FreeWorld is awesome, and I am hooked, I am sure you will be too once you start playing the game as well.... And to think, the game is only Alpha at the moment, you can use your own imagination on what the final product will be, as much time and care this team takes to make the game what it is.... Thanks again...image

Can I just say that the screenshots look F%%%%ing awesome for a non sanctioned entity with no funding? Congratulations you have piqued my interest. I personally would be proud to say I was in some way involved with such an endeavor. Perhaps when the time comes you will allow me to pen a comedic quest or 3.

    Good luck.
