Why is ShadowBane the only game with good races?

Seriously , it's one of the only mmorpg on the market with races that I've actually liked. It was finally a game without the standard orc/human/dwarf/elf race select and actually had some very cool and interesting races. The centaurs were just awesome. If the makers of shadowbane can cover a large amount of races with lots of in depth character customization then why can't the big blockbusters do it? Or they just refuse to do it for some bizarre reason. They could easily still give us the conventional races but what's stopping them from adding a few more?

Here's a list of sbs races : * Aelfborn (Half Elves)

* Aracoix (Flying Birdmen)

* Centaurs (Half man, half horse)

* Dwarves (Stonemen)

* Elves

* Half Giants

* Humans (Heirs of the All-Father)

* Irekei (Desert-dwelling Devilmen)

* Minotaurs (The Beast Men, creation of the elves)

* Nephilim (Flying demon-like creatures)

* Shades (The Pale Ones who are linked to the process of death, and have a gaunt, skeletal appearance.)

* Vampires (Powers and spells consume health instead of mana or stamina.)

    Horizons had some nice race choices. Sadly the game was not that good.

    And most games go with the tried and true because that is usually what is most played. Add whatever you want and Elves will still be played by many. Strangely Human is a highly placed race in games that offer multiple races.

    EQ had Trolls, Ogres, Froglocs and Iksar and those 4 races were probably on the bottom of the list on amount being played. I loved Ogres and Trolls though.

    EQ for sure had a great race selection for its time. I remember hearing that too about humans which is just strange , I mean there so boring and there's no style to them. I guess for me after playing mmorpgs for all these years and games like UO where you had no choice other than human , it's nice to play something different.

    God damn it, i want a mmorpg with vampires.. x.x

    Shadowbane was best for unique bonuses/limitations per race, with a fairly wide variety.

    Vanguard has some cool races...but its a huge rip off of EQ2 when it comes to lore and basic gameplay.  SWG had some cool ones too

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
    -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

    I agree, i tend to play other races if i can as well. I tend to lean towards the smaller races because i hate to have to look down at things im trying to kill. I have always been partial to Halflings and Dwarfs, though i hate Gnomes.

    I admit that i have played Humans before though, i had a Human SK in EQ that i got pretty high. I think what brings people to Humans is that it is familiar, and that although they are not the greatest at anything they are usually pretty good at everything.

    Im sure that if research was done Elves would be by far the highest played Race of all time in MMOs. And I think High Elf (or whatever they may be called) and Dark Elf (or whatever they may be called) would be pretty close in numbers.

    This is very funny. I always play the tallest race I can find, because I hate to look up at things I'm trying to kill. Also, if you are very small, walking up a hill, or stairs, you have to look up, or all you see is the ground, which makes me feel claustrophobic.

    This was a complaint I had about WAR. I wanted to play Order, and play a Tank, but the only Tank on the Order side was a Dwarf, and I did feel claustrophobic because of the Dwarf point of view.

    On to the OP, well, maybe a game can only do one thing good. Darkbane did the races well, but everything else, graphics, point n click movement, PvE boring grind (i mean more boring than usual), and spending tons of money to build a city only to have it torn down in a night, sucked.

    I have been waiting years for a decent game with Centuar race to come out, unfortunatly the MMO genre is getting more and more generic.

    I always thought Dark Age of Camelot had a great selection of races, (18 total) and even though Albion had 4 types of humans, each subtype had distinct physical characteristics and traits which made each one better at certain roles.

    Shadowbane was good as well, but not the only game with good races.

    I agree , DAOC had a great line of races too , the firbolgs and those necro guys on albion side were pretty awesome. But I still feel shadowbane had a amazing line up , it had very original races that were in a way unheard of in mmorpgs at the time and still somewhat are today.

    The best I remember when it comes to classes, is Anarchy Online. They had a lot of variety.

    Indeed.... it has a good lineup of races... but there is nothing original.  90% of all fantasy games have dwarves and Elves, centaurs vampires and minotaurs are nothing new, and maybe you don't know, but the aracoix and nephilim are NOT original.   Now try creating totally new races that haven't been used before, that's found almost excusively in Sci-Fi, where else outside of Star Trek do you find Klingons(and don't say "your toilet"), where else other than Babylon 5 do you find the "shadow"  or where other than Star Wars are there Gungans(yuck).

    Now take some imagination and try to create a new FANTASY race.  Like.... maybe a nocturnal race, with red complexion, who's own existance is phasing between magical dimensions, only allowing half of their body to be visible at any given time-and in chunks.

    Again, while a good lineup of existing races, something original-and cool, can make up for 5 un-original rehashes.

    It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay.

     Hey my EQ2 troll is not fat!! Ok, ok my EQ troll was fairly pudgy but then i don't play EQ anymore. I also tried the WoW trolls but meh they were just too JarJar Binks like for me and the end game rading at 60 just burnt me out before I could last to any of the expansions.
