So, BioWare released some new screenshots for The Old Republic a bit ago. Here's a link to the site:

Linkage!

Enjoy!

P.S.: They actually downsized the Lightsabers. I am happy-cat! XD

    They look great!

Doesn't understand why some people claim the graphics to be "cartoony"?

Does KOTOR 1&2 look like a cartoon to you?

they've been tweaking the graphics due to the outcry. Smaller sabers, less spandex / super-hero costumes.

Graphically, I think it's coming along nicely now.

let's see what the gameplay ends up being like.

I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"

That's what I meant. They heard the outcry on the forums and they actually listened and swiftly. I take that as a good sign. The rest remains to be seen.

I think it had to do with the original Lego lightsabers for one, plus the "Clone Wars cartoon movie/series" graphic style.

The screenshots are crap. But I'm fairly sure they're not representative for the game upon release.

AC (retired); EQ (retired); DAoC (retired); Horizons (retired); EQII (retired); CoH (retired); AC II (tested); Lineage II (beta); Neocron (tested); Saga of Ryzom (beta); SWG (retired)...

    Nice screenshots.

Considering the game is so early in development the game is looking quite fantastic.  I'm loving the environments - very Star Wars.

The character models are coming along very nicely as well.

My faith in BioWare is proving well placed, as usual :).

The only one I'm 'unsure' about at this point is that 'Jedi Enclave' one on Tython.

I had always envisioned the homeworld of the Jedi to be full of life and nature, ancient structures, art, something with a sense of history.  The Jedi Enclave looks like asmall base or even a guild house rather than something that gives you the feeling of being the home of a Jedi.

all this is a very early stage of graphics, but I am so relieved they are going away from the cartoony version.

That's really my only main worry as far as the game goes. I can live with whatever they do as far as graphics, but Bioware has only done small worlds. I'm unsure of how they're going to do with the large scale associated with an mmo. I don't want to see a Star Wars mmorpg ala Mass Effect and KotOR where every planet only has one or two  small places of interest. But it is too early to tell, and that screen may just show one small piece of a bigger environment.

Yeah I understand the concern I hope the planets are meaningful and large, even if we only start out with a few at launch. I just keep reminding myself of who they have leading the project at BioWare and the fact that they helped create the open world of SWG. I hope they are not only building a game for everyone, but also for veterans of SWG and that they don’t forget the reasons why we loved that game at one time.

I'm officially hyped for this game. At this point, I wish I didn't know about the release so early because it's going be driving me insane until they release this in late '09 / early '10.

nice to see they are moving away from the overly cartoonyness of the original screens and hope they keep doing so

i am however more intereted in the gameplay than the graphics

Very nice, looking forward to getting into this game. Don't think it will take them long at all to put the game together, the hero engine is a nice piece of kit, watched a vid of the hero dev team not that long ago putting a world together...only took them the guts of half an hour :o

One non Jedi/Sith related pic? My confidence for this game is going down fast, might be nice for everyone else that plays Jedi/Sith and have scores of orgies and armies of Jedi/Sith but Star Wars isnt just about the Force.....show me some of the other professions/classes something that doesnt have a glowstick in it.......

  • DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062

Indeed the HeroEngine is impressive and I love how several devs can be working on the same area at the same time watching each other's progress and such.

Still, it's not just worldbuilding they're doing, it's many worlds.  Then all the content that's going into it.  Apparently over 100 people are working on it.  I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Beta mid 09 and with any luck, a release in late 09.

/agreed. I too would like to see how the other classes look. Starting to look like the main class to be is Jedi n everything else is just secondary.  Tho I will say at least the graphics have improved somewhat. Nice to see the lightsabre not as big as the character holding em.

Since they haven't released any information about any other classes, pretty much all their promotional material will relate to Jedi/Sith.  After they begin to announce more classes, they will focus more of their promotional material on the most recent announced classes.

That isn't to say they still won't put most of their promotional emphasis on Jedi/Sith, since the folks at LEC seem to be convinced that Jedi are the only thing of interest to MMO players in relation to Star Wars.

I will say that screenshots of Jedi/Sith wielding their lightsabers are more dramatic than similar (to each other) looking characters with blasters representing the other classes will be.  You can't really difererentiate soldiers/bounty hunters/smugglers/etc. in screenshots, aside from dressing them in different outfits/armor.

BioWare have stated a few times now that they'll be doing everything they can to make sure every class is interesting and makes players want to try them out - having their own special features about them.

Also they've said they pretty much want to let players play as the most prominent rolls in Star Wars.

I think it's safe to assume Mandalorians, Republic Special Forces, some sort of Scoundrel/Rogue/Smuggler type class will be there as well... but as said above, since they haven't actually revealed any other classes yet, they can't really post too much.  The Kel Dor could be a number of different classes but at least two races are now shown to be in game which we didn't know about... the blue horned guy [no idea what they're called] and the Kel Dor solider of some sort...

Game looks like it is coming along pretty well.

I hope the combat is like Jedi Outcast.

Man this game is getting Better, Quickly.  IT started at GOOD and right now Its at AWSOME.  Hopefully I don't need to wait to long.

I LIKE the graphics.   I don't need overly realistic graphics to be honest,   Good Particle and Lighting effects are more imporatant to me.

Particle effects need to be kept restrained.  They need to be in line with what is seen in the films, as opposed to flashy and obnoxious.  Combat should look like a disco party.

That "gun" looks like a hair dryer.

It's good to see some needed changes go in, but there's still some fixing up to do.
