Before E&B released, it seemed everywhere I turned there were ads and marketing for it. I remember this one ad where they showed a crowded room with random space-faring characters all talking to each other, then across the room this scantly-clad mysterious woman was staring at the reader. It was so disgustingly trying to appeal to the lonely male... Maybe I read into it too much, but you know advertisers think like that.

Anyway, played the game in beta and it was boring. I saw the advertisements after that and it just completed my disdain for the game.

Oh yeah, sex sells after all. I don't think you're reading too much into it at all. It (the game) appealed to me because I'm the epitomy of the casual gamer due to RL considerations. You could solo, and there was no involuntary PvP. I missed those ads, but certainly didn't see any after EA sank its teeth fully into Westwood.

There was quite a lot of the (to be expected) usual anti-(insert your favorite big bad company here) venting after E&B's sunset was announced. Will that have any adverse long-term effect on EA? Doubtful. EA has a craptacular history of handling MMO's, but they still make a profit and that's the only thing that matters. They really don't care how they're seen, especially by a relatively small group of people, unless that perception of them begins to affect their profits in a really major way. All they have to do is satisfy enough customers to be profitable, and do it with minimal outlays. That's what happens when companies begin to emulate the WalMart business plan.

Granted, I thought the game was pretty terrible as well, and is why I am not playing it anymore, however, there are some facts that lie behind the dev doors.
As for EQ, when it was mainly Vernat behind it, there were some aspects that I found better than what it is today.  On the other side of that coin, if SoE had not helped back them, they may not be where they are today.
I dont know much about Planetside, as I beta tested it for one day and found it was not for me.  However, I played EQ for 4 years or so, and that has to say something about a video game.  To be honest, EQ got old, and you are right about the expansions, but to this day, I hope to find a game that will give me that same anticipation to play it as EQ once did.

Course nice thing about buzzes is that rumors often saves a company's ass.

    This is my opinion.

i tried swg like a month and a half ago, thats bout 1 year after its release, it was still buggy, the customer support was the worst ever ^_^

I always check the companies behind the game before i try em, at least if im goin to pay for the game per month and so. So swg was a sad dissapointment and SOE was behind it. So now i have the choice of pickin either WoW or EQ2, on one side SOE and on the other side Blizzard..... course i will go for blizzard....

sure there is lots of fans of everquest 1 that will surely play EQ2, but lots of ppl like me that are decidin on wheter to play WoW or EQ2 might go for WoW for the sole reason that SOE has a dodgy past with swg.... so negative publicity plays a big role in my opinion. Sure a company can rise above negative publicity by showin its quality when the game is actually released. But for the first i highly doubt that SOE will do a better job with EQ2 than with swg and for the second even if they did, they will have already lost quite many customers cuz of the negative publicity.
