I'm not very computer savy but I'm decent. With that said is there anyway to increase my ram performance. I got 1256 ddram and only 865 free.
Im using windows Xp and I have system restore turned off. Xp is a huge drain and I was wondering anyone has some tweaks that might help out.

I don

1. you have plenty of ram
2. xp does use quite a bit of resources
3. Kill those background programs ya have running. Use spyware programs like adaware to clean up your system. (you can dload this for free)
4. Defrag your hd on a regular basis.
5. If you find that after this a particular game is requiring more resources and is running slow, open up your task manager, go to processes, click on user name, and end everything thats running under your username with the exception of task manager and explorer.exe then play yer game
There are some tweaks you can do for xp, however try this out first...
Adaware
A couple of things you failed to mention are
1. What is your CPU?
If it is a PIII or PII then XP will run slowly regardless of the amount of RAM you have.
2. How much meg on your Video Card?
That will also make your system "appear" slow because it takes a long time to paint the screens if you are running a video card with 64 meg.

in concerns with your 5th tip I wouldn't end every process, the easier way of doing this is going to start run and type in "msconfig" and goto the startup tab and disable what you see as not really needed. BUT, after you disable a couple restart your system to make sure that it will operate ok without those startup programs. but definitly follow the previous steps that the above poster mentioned.

You may also check out www.ccleaner.com It is a free and very helpful program for clearing temporary file data etc, I use this along with Ad-Aware and works like a charm for me. Also remember, keep the desktop clear of clutter, and defragment your harddrive every few weeks and your computer should perform fine. Good luck with it.
Ill try what Devil mentioned and see if that helps.
My specs are

In addition to disabling stuff under the start up tab, you can free up alot of memory under the services tab. Take out everything but the bare essencials. I'm currently only using 62 meg to run the OS and my networking, compared to the normal 250 or so.
When you select user name, it recatagorizes your files. The majority of programs running under your user name are non essential, with the exception of taskmanager and explorer.exe. Leave everything labled Local Service, Network Service and System alone.. do not end these programs. This is just a simple way of toning your system down for the session and it will reload normally upon reboot. Just remember click username, (sorts everything together for you, then just end everything not labled under Local, Network and System with the exception of the two programs Task Manager and Explorer.exe.
