Graphics or gameplay? Which one is it? You can't have it both ways. Some people say you can have both. They are wrong. What people consider "good graphics" nowadays is something like what Age of Conan has. The problem is that with todays technology it's just not going to happen. There are no 300vs300 epic battles in AoC, or not even 100vs100. You know why? Because the engine, servers and users computers can't handle it. There would be huge lag and crashes, it would be unplayable. Seeing people here complain about DF graphics really pisses me off. I've seen many here say how they prefer gameplay over graphic but once we see a new video what is the first thing they complain about? Yes, graphics. This is so dumb. I do agree with most people that Aventurine needs to work on the animations. I hate it when in the videos all the characters had this "bounce" in their running. Hope they can fix that. If you want to see what happens when an MMO is all graphics and no gameplay, I suggest you go subscribe to Age of Conan. Sure the game looks pretty but is mostly a boring, instanced, single player game which has no soul. You really want that? We don't know much about the gameplay in DF but if they can make it fluid and fun, graphics are acceptable. At least for me.
Well the 2 italians that got to do a short open Beta declared DF graphics beat any game currently out or some such. The DF Fans took this to heart and posted a thread here stating DF's graphics were better then AoC's or LoTRO's, but then the Italian beta testers released their video which IMO doesn't look anywhere as good as AoC's or even LoTRO's but i'm sure their are many fans which will just call anyone that disagrees with their assessment that DF has the best graphics ever as trolls. (as seen in this thread already)

(assuming Aventurine takes time off for the holidays which seems reasonable as they took a 2 week summer vacation before releasing their video in August.)

So you're in the beta then I guess? I wasn't so impressed by the graphics in the movie but off course they will probably use more effects on the final game so it might look better at release. Gameplay I have off course no clue about since I'm not in the beta.
Other games with both great gameplay and graphics will come out next year, Guildwars 2 for one.
I don't see why we can't have both, MMO devs have gotten lazy with the graphics since "Wows graphics isn't so hot so why would we have to spend so much work on it then?".

Does that make me a "true gamer"? I like graphics, and I like gameplay, I can stand bad gameplay to an extent, and I can stand bad graphics to an extent, does that mean i'm not a "true gamer"? What games do you play? How many have you played? How good are you? How FAST are you? Could you play on a professional level? Does ANY of that make you a "true gamer"?

Well i would agrue that if your gonna post everytime that DF is coming out in 2008 as egg's avatar does that it would matter? I've seen the "DF is coming" arguement since sept of 2007 it gets alittle old especially when the fanbois always follow it with the same tired tinfoil hat aguement that everyone with doubts is somehow trying to win a interent arguement or prove they are internet tough, just makes the fans that post such crap look incredably swallow and dim witted. Personally I don't get paid more or less in my RL job if I win or loss a internet arguement, nore does it get me more women. Debating a point can be interesting but win or lose it really doesn't matter DF will succeed, or fail on its own merits (or lack of)
This can lead to diferent reviews on games. For example: - Game A review: the graphics are stunning and amazing. I really felt like I was walking inside the forest and stuff, but meh, the gameplay is horrible. There is no huge battle and I couldnt get past 30 minutes of play due to lack of gameplay. - Game B review: the graphics are good, not a top end graphics if compared to Game A, but if compared to the medium games in market, it does it job. And man! The gameplay is amazing! I was in a huge battle with 500 on each side and I could feel what I felt when I was reading that epic book. Playing this game is so awesomesauce, it got me right on the toes! The interactivy, the character development, the monster AI all gets me stuck.
Now, is it possible to name Games A and B?
Game A is Age of Conan.
Game B does not excist.

ok its not crysis but damn, it looks better then WoW and WAR and those were nice mmo gfx too.
for me a 3D mmo doesn't need high-end graphics, they need a good atmosphere of the world. WoW did that alright, same with WAR.
AoC at the other hand had great graphics but a terrible atmosphere. i quited AoC for that reason, i need orcs 'n elfs
If you want to know what's wrong with Darkfall's graphics, look no further than the two screenshots in part 1 of the preview by the Noob webcomics people that was just released today. Someone on another thread picked the screenshot apart mercilessly, and not surprisingly, none of the fanboys can come up with any clever comebacks so it was simply ignored.
It truly boggles the mind of anyone with a shred of common sense that this is all they have to show less than a month before a "promised release".

I think its about a good balance. Simple as. Anyone with an ounce of sense will understand there is a tradeoff between graphical complexity and issues like nubmer of players on screen in the same area
Overall though I'd rather have innovative gameplay than major uber pretty graphics. As long as they are adequete. That said animations are more important in some ways.

According to RPG Vault Maple Story has around 50 million subscribers worldwide. So using your logic this would make Maple Story's graphics almost 5x better than WoW.
Personally I think it's a case where people can overlook not having the best graphics when the game will run decent on their system and they find it fun.

I do believe if WoW would launch today, people would absolutely hate it. It would probably get 10k subscriptions and go FTP after the first month. Gamers expectations are different today then what they were when WoW launched.
Just like how Diablo and starcraft with their 20th century graphics would get put into the bargain bin if it released today right?

Problem is that most gamers think anything less than single player rpg graphics = graphics suck. They want it all and they don't understand why they can't have it.

WoW was the first mainstream MMO. Its' not a game, it's a social phenomenon. Rules that apply with other MMO's don't apply with WoW.
