What exactly is a "pet". Is it something that just follows you around, and doesn't really do anything? Or is it something that does some damage... or maybe buffs you or something?

Normal pets in the game will be able to do things. Such as fight, buff, etc... However the Collector's Edition pet is simply for appearance sake. They are in no means forcing everyone to buy the Collector's Edition, or cause disadvantage to those that don't.
1. The pet that just follows you... nothing more. Cats, parrots etc
2. The summoned (warlock) or tamed (hunter) pet. Those can fight and buff etc.
And then you can also have mounts but those arent exactly pets imo.
The collectors edition pet is a pet that just follows you around (like the cat and parrot) and there were rumors that it would be a mini-zerg (from Starcraft) or a mini-Diablo ( from the game... yes.. Diablo)

you are correct sir! I also 'apparently' saw the zerg and diablo and I for one hoping for the zerg... tho I hope it's bigger than a bloody squirrle.. the Diablo is like a walking teddybear that looks like diablo.. no walking plush toys thank you...

I'd be happy if i had a sheep that unsummons and dies by exploding brapping once in awhile in abttle be cool too LOL

Actually I think these were the pets confimed by blizzard for the collecters edition, not 100% sure though

from what i understand, blizzard said it would not be a zergling or a mini-diablo... they just said it would be really cool. i seem to remember a blizz rep saying it wouldn't be a zerg or diablo type pet but i can't for the life of me remember when that was... it may have changed since then but i am pretty sure they have not said what type of pet it will be.
exploding sheep are an engineering item, its like a homing missle that baaa's. expensive but funny
as far as i know there are no cows (with a purpose) in the game which is why i'm still holding out for my cow

You can only have one pet 'out' at a time.
That being said, Mechanical Squirrel > *

I think you misunderstood his reply. I doubt he was being sarcastic, but stating that he too has not heard anymore on what the pets might be.
And count me in for the flying cows!
We must P A Y ? ! for exploding sheep? That is just soooo wrong

I'm pretty sure he means that the components to make the exploding sheep in game are expensive.
I hope the pet is a hamster in a ball. I think that'd be cool.
I am hoping for a pet Gnome!!!
