Why RoM should have a native Mac/Linux Client...

gingus418gingus418 Member Posts: 128

From all that I've read and seen of this game, it seems like it'll do what it promises: being the best, if not one of the best, f2p games out there. The game itself is a conglomeration of many popular mmorpgs today, and has taken the best, if not the most differentiating features from all of them, and due to that I believe it will be a very successful game. What, in my opinion it has borrowed:

Dual Class System - FFXI

Castle Seiges - L2

Housing - EQ2, FFXI, Ultima Online

Arena/Battlegrounds - WoW

Tons upon Tons of quests - WoW

Dye-able armors - GW

Auction House - FFXI, L2, EQ2, WoW

In Depth Character Customization - CoX

These are some of the key features that I can think of off the top of my head, but the list surely goes on. These features have made the aforementioned games very popular, and I think will do nicely in one setting.

Many of these, with an exception of WoW (and CoX soon), do not run native on Mac or Linux, and require either crossover, which doesn't do such a hot job of running games (from my experience), or bootcamp, which is only an option if you happen to have an unused copy of windows laying around. Now, I just so happen to have bootcamp running on my mac, and will be able to access the game via my windows partition, but what about people that can't do such a thing?

In reading many of the previews of the game, and interviews with the developers, they mentioned that they'd like their game to be above the rest, a "triple A" game. Many of the features within the game, as I've mentioned above, are great features, but if you do a little digging, many have not originated in this game. While I do believe that having all of these features together in one place will help set RoM apart from the competition, I feel that something that would really set the game apart from the others is having a native Mac and Linux version.

The only two mmorpgs that I know of that have native Mac and Linux version are WoW and EVE online. While this is a great thing, having two mainstream mmos available to the mac, many other companies haven't followed this route, although I believe that developing for not just windows users, but all computers users is a very sensible business plan. While maybe not economically viable for the developers at first, I think that this is something that should really be looked into. You want to set this game apart from the rest developers? Taking the best features from all of the games out there, and putting them into one was the first step. The second would be going the extra mile and doing something that most of the p2p mmo developers have yet to do; create a native client for the mac and linux.

EDIT: Maybe I should have posted this in the RoM forum... sorry if it offends anybody that it was posted here, and if the mods feel so incline to move the thread, be my guest.

Soryy but the character devolopment system isn't as good as CoX, You can only chose between a few premade faces(12 oe so). The body is the same however with lots of sliders and the haircolour choser is the best I seen ever.

on another note, Guildwars also use dual classes almost he same way ('cept that in ROM you can change your main class between the 2).

Good points guys. I was just trying to point out some similarities between the features found in this game and other ones. And you're right about the ones you've pointed out (I may have gotten a couple of things wrong in my post). Either way, the main intent of my post was not to point out similarities, but to give a valid reason as to why a mac/linux client should be developed for this game.

Anybody agree/disagree with me on this one?

Hehe, no problem posting that stuff here i guess.

Im all for  something that works on every os.

atm that just isn't reality. So buying a mac if you actually enjoy gaming alot then i would say its not the best choice to make.

very true. I own a mac, and have dual boot enabled with a copy of windows vista though, so I'm set.
