Todays TC update for Chapter 11 includes a memorial for Jeff Freeman. It's feature in the Village of Aurillia:
In Memory:
- The Aurilia guildhall has a new memorial to a fallen hero, named "The Freeman."
The Battle of Echo Base:
- Vehicle mines on Hoth detonate on cloaked or stealthed targets.
- Only those with a combat level of 70 or higher are eligible to go to Hoth.
- Indented Phase 2 tasks in the completion window.
- Changed the token count to a more yellow color.
- During the Imperial version of Phase 2 in the Battle of Echo Base, the Rebel success message is no longer given when the Imperials fail to capture the command center and the correct voice-over is given when they succeed.
- Changed the presentation of the objective tracking in Phase 3 for Rebels.

It's kind of odd that the old flightless bird beat SOE to putting a memorial for him in their game.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
At least they did somthing, I still think they should have put out a public condolence message personally.

Who was this guy? Name sounds familiar but can't place it.
He was a developer involved with the creation of the NGE.
There have been some many classless statemates made on the internet after his death and all I have to say with regard to those statements is they are shameful. The guy did his dammed job, probably like any of us would have done. It is a shame people leave these hateful hurtful words where everyone can see and be sickened.
I feel sorry for Jeff Freeman who was the only Developer who had the guts to even attempt to shed some light on the NGE. He did do more than many in his position would have done. Most people people would have hid rather than come here and talk about a contravetial project, like the NGE, which he was a part of. The man deserves respect and his death is no joke for some shameless fool to laugh about.
Jeff Freeman is like any one of us. Maybe he was not a Saint, but who the hell are we to throw stones? As a SWG Veteran I wish to apologize for any crude remarks other veterans have said. They were classless and I assure you they do not represent the majority of us who are good and decent people.
As to Jeff Freeman's family, I wish you well and hope you will heal from these hard times and remember Jeff warmly in your hearts.
As to Jeff Freeman, to me he will be remembered as the most couragous of the SWG NGE developers and a person whom I respect.

Ah that Jeff Freeman. Thanks.
I didnt agree with what he did to the game, but sorry to hear that he died
Why be sorry? Everyone dies.
He at least acknowledged the fact that the NGE wasn't taken well and made attempts to empathize and understand the outcry. The guy did the job he was hired to do. Hindsight is 20/20. Im sure that during the coding he couldn't foresee the outcome and probably was coached by SOE's Bagdhad Bob on how well recieved the NGE would be. If he hadn't been the coder, they would have hired someone else to do the work.
He was a developer involved in NGE as many has stated before and had only a small role in the changes but was willing to stand up to the public and thus became known as the "public face" of NGE despite having such a small role in it.
He left SoE in 2006 after numerous rage placed against him.Sadly apparently he been troubled for a while and took his own life in the end though according to his brother not because of SWG or the rage but still makes me mad about all the no lifers who took this game so personal and attacked him and others verbally for such a long time.
Maybe he is dead now but he was more alive then all those who took the attacks to a new level purely because of some pixel game .Yes i can see many of you still hanging around on this forum!
All he did was his damn job aye!
Lets face it for those of us that actually work. There been times we do things because we are told to do even if we do not agree with them because thats the way things are .
Even if he agreed so what?Thats life if we all did things and got them right always we all have perfect lives!
It took months for SOE to erect this memorial -its in a less traveled zone.
Months earlier , The Ducks placed a super fountain in memory of Mr Freeman in a major city.
Who is more respectfully?

Hang on, let me just get this straight.
You want to turn an ingame memorial to someone's unfortunate passing into a competition?
As I've said already, SOE could and probably should have at least issued a condolence message (of course it's very much a possibility that they did privately) but come on if you stoop any lower you'll need a shovel to get back out.

If SOE did a Condolence message privately , that's nice.but we have no proof that they did nor am I requesting any out of respect for Mr Freeman's family.
IIts not a competition , its a comparison and once again the shame is on SOE.
BTW , I have s shovel , in comes in handy for situations from my former MMO gaming host.

He also created the creature handler system you all loved so much. He had a passion for what he did then after he did his job all you scumbags dragged his name through the mud and some sent him death threats. Can you honestly say you know how that feels? To have a creative passioniate job that touched people as did with the creature handler system, then the next day they hate your guts talk smack about you and your family family and to think some sent him death threats. He was always a dev who communitcated directly with the players so don't think some your irrational remarks were ever unnoticed. This is the kind of stuff that makes me not want to be apart of the mmo community. People take these games way too serisously.
You will have to forgive me if this sounds cruel, but I am not going to applaud placing a statue calling a man who takes his own life a hero. There are plenty of memorials placed to players in SWG who have given their lives in the Iraq War, and I refuse to put him into that same great company.
If he was troubled, he should have gotten help, and continued to seek it. Not only was taking his own life the exact opposite of what a "hero" is, but it was cowardly and selfish. Maybe his children who were orphaned by his selfishness will take great comfort in this ingame memorial. I have had the experience of dealing with a loved one who suffered from depression, and watched her fight it and pull herself out of it's clutches. To keep fighting is to be a hero. To give up and end it, without regard for thise you leave behind, is not what makes a hero.
This has nothing to do with what I may or not think about SWG or the NGE.
Yes... 'cause poping lead in to people who only want to be left alone is so mutch more heroic... Just saying.
Maybe his exit was less heroic but then again many "warheroes" take an early leave of life too. What matters is what he, and them did in life and in my eyes having the will and passion to step in to the line of fire for something you belive in is atleast worth some praise...
Then if the line delivers lead and shrapnell och words and insults does not realy matter.. does it.
This have been a good conversation
Suicide has become such a taboo subject that whenever it's discussed people try pretend it doesn't happen. Ironically, it's this issue (and the ever increasing amounts of stress people deal with day to day) that causes suicide rates to increase.
If anything, hopefully it'll be a reminder to those that see it to open up and find someone to talk to about their issues rather then bottling them up and pretending it doesn't exist.
I was glad to see the Freeman Memorial appear in game. Ok it's way out in Aurelia but it's there.
One of the things that he came up with that cracked me up was "Freeman's Postulate". It'd have been hugely inappropriate, I guess, but it'd have tickled Jeff no end.

So, you all sat in camps and that was fun?

Quite! We're all going to die, it's what we do while we're alive that we're remembered for. Unfortunately for Freeman he will be remembered by many ex-SWG players as one of the main villans behind the NGE, for this reason I pity him not because he died but for his legacy (pun not intended). Many thought he must have agreed with the NGE and been one of its advocates, either that or he didn't have the stones to make a stand against a poorly done smash and grab operation.
In all honesty without any malice, to say I'm sorry that he died (as we all will) would be akin to saying I'm sorry Joseph Goebells died (as we all will). Surely it's what the man did while he lived that is more important to us and by what we judge the value of his existance, and its value is of varied worth depending on each individual.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
