Darkfall, a Meridian 59 ripoff

Bob_MaloogaBob_Malooga Member Posts: 6

If it had not been for MMORPG.com I would have never even heard of Darkfall. After I saw it here I decided to go check it out. It started out looking like most other mmo's except when I got to the PvP part. Now I like pvp as much as the average guy but I  dont live for it. I like Warhammer and their style of pvp. Mainly because it is not forced upon me and I dont lose al my stuff when I die.

After seeing that in Darkfall you can be attacked anywhere  at anytime and anyone can loot your corpse well, lets justr say I wont be wasting money on it at launch. The thing that bothers me the most is when the creators of DF were asked  "what about griefers?" they had the same response that any other game that tried that style of play and it dosent work. They said it will be tough being a killer. being shuned by merchants and not being able to enter cities and such. This wont stop the griefers, they will just have one character for selling and one for killing and the only way they can prevent that is to only allow one copy of the game per person and only one character which will never happen.

So, I say goodluck with that DF and as I look through the list, I glance up at the line of mmos'c coming out I say, Next!

My experience is that players that like to grief will go to EXTREME lengths to do it. Mindlessly grind for a million hours? Sure no problem. Travel across teh entire world to trade, them come back to grief some more? Sure, no problem. Get killed by guards a million times, sure no problem. Kill, log off, kill again, log off, yep. Two box so you can trade with one character, grief with another, why not.

If it CAN be done, griefers will do it.

Agreed, there are two enticements here, first is the fact that they can just let someone else do the hard work first, then gank them and take what they have, and two, you know its gonna hurt when you loot everything someones work for, thats the kinda satisfaction griefers crave, knowing theyve pissed you off.

I"ve been on FFA PvP servers and seen griefers do things I just couldn't imagine doing myself. You're going to go off in the woods, by yourself, and grind on green mobs over and over until you max level, just so you can gank lower level players? Yep.

I couldn't do it, but for some people it's a piece of cake.

You can only have one character per server, so this won't happen much. Also if a greifer attacks someone they get flagged and then can be attacked by anyone else on the entire server.

Finally Darkfall isn't a gear based game. You are being matched against the other players skill, gear doesn't matter that much. This is why Darkfall won't fail. Because even if I lose my uber-leet gear I can still kill people. This has never been done before in an MMO so DF will be different.

Also you are really ignorant if you think Darkfall sounds like any other old MMO, just plain ignorant.

You DO only get 1 character per account.

My belief is not that griefers could kill this game at birth, but the lack of players/community could.

PvP games tend in my experience to attract even more tossers than PvE.

This is why I am making Clan Naked!

We will not wear any armor, or any clothes, and we will Zerg you naked, then take all your stuff.

It doesn't matter if you kill 10 of us, because you won't get anything, we will be naked. But if we only kill one of you, we will strip you bare, and sell everything and put the money in the bank.

Given the amount of obnoxious fans, Ive decided Ill go this route, with so many of its players not having any ffa pvp expierience, theyll be ripe for the picking. Id rather kill for my gear and loot as opposed to actually farm for it.

What makes it really funny is Ill be doing it in a large group of guildies, Im hopin to hunt down a few of the fanbois on these boards as well.

You dont know that! The game isnt released.. You can only be a sceptic, and have another opinion.. What about the need to actually socialize to go up in the ranks and make sure you dont get griefed, or ganked.. whatever.. Thats a pretty good counter at my point..

I dont even see why you wanted to make this post anyway, if you think its a crappy game.. Was it only so there could be a bit more trolling/fanboi'ing.. I have no idea what its called.. If you hate it that much allready.. Move a long.. seriously..

We don't know how these will finally turn out i game, while i agree it is possible and it will happen (getting gank and grief)

    But to what degree  ?

You will live within your races border  (at least you start there) ..How likely will it be you ganked by your own lot considering the penalties tied to it ?

I just can't imagine some enemy race get to your homebase and gank you without you getting some support ..

Then there are enough "police" and "anti  P-k" clans around  to help keep control ...

And then it depends on your social skills too..get friends and good relations to the "mighty" and then you under protection and declared "untouchable" by enemys ..

Many things will play a role beside the pure game mechanics...

You really never have played Meridian 59 before have you. Everything you listed above has been done before on meridian 59. In fact If I were the owners of Meridian 50 I'd consider suing.

Again with the personal attacks, why is it so hard for some people to just agrue the points of the game rather that to stoop to "well, your momma is fat" type remarks.

Itll eventually turn into a few powerful guilds that pretty much rule the server. As for ganking, its far easier and exciting than grinding mobs, itll be beyond prevalent.

It is up to the normal, fun-loving PvPers to form groups, guilds, alliances and nations to make sure that a pure griefer's life is short and unfulfilling :)

I must say this would work if enough people were involved, but from my past experiences I don't think the game will have time to develop because people don't have patience. As for making the griefers life short and unfulfilling, it sounds good but these type of people will go through hell for their game play and love every minute of it. I guess a good example would be someone that is into S&M, you dressup in leather and such and get the crap beat out of you or beat the crap out of someone. They consider that to be "fun". If that is what they like, more power to them but they should not hold their breath waiting on me to come play.

I did not say you could do that in Darkfall. I am saying this is an example of the extremely tedious and boring things gankers will do if they have to.

    See the point?

You may replace "grinding green mobs" with absolutely antyhing in th3e game that sucks to do, but you ahve to do it so you can gank people.

    Get it?

Just out of curiousity, you do realize that this is going to be aimed at a niche market, right?  Your whole post could have been summed up as 'FFA PVP allows ganking.  I've played that game before and don't enjoy it.  I won't play Darkfall.'

OK, so don't play Darkfall.  Do you intend to make posts like this on every game that you won't play, or that you try and don't like?

Finally, saying someone is 'ignorant' is not an insult, it's just a point of fact.  You were ignorant, for example, about the 1 character per account thing.

An easy solution to the having a friend's character, or your second account character trade with merchants who are KoS flagged to  you, is to also stick someone with a PVP faction hit when they trade with a PVPer.

If this world is truely as large as is claimed, I'm not worried because the gankers will not get me.  I'll be out in the badlands so far away from anything working on my own agenda.

Sure, now and then a stray war party will take me down, but while i'm pveing expect me to be wearing easily replaced stuff.....

Now, when I'm pvping with my clan, will be a different story...but even then, I'll only carry what I can afford to lose.

Its a different mentality OP, fighting with Risk vs Reward consequences, and I understand if its not for you.

You have to learn how to take advantage of the mechanics of a game like DF, play very defensively, and have a thick skin, because, yeah, sometimes you are just going to get pissed off.

But someone there was mention of it being a rip-off of Merdian 59...... lets hope so, the world hasn't seen many games since those early days and could use a breath of fresh air..... I just can't play another quest driven, meaningless pvp game like WOW and all its clones.

The FFA pvp works in EVE. There was only one time I was omgwtfpwned and that was when I ventured in null security by myself, and hell even then I was LOOKING for pvp. I guess the reason there aren't many suicide ganks in the high security regions, from my personal experiance, is because the consequences are too steep.

At what point do "steep' consequences mean the PvP isn't really FFA?

4 posts in 6 years. Thanks for contributing. You shouldn't have bothered to crawl out of your cave with this idiotic post BoB.

You clearly don't like PvP because real PvP has risk vs reward to make it meaningful, otherwise it's a joke like in WAR where zerging becomes an approved method of winning battles. You don't speak to any of the fantastic features that Darkfall will be offering and the freedom of a real virtual world uninhibited by all the cloned unrealistic mechanics of late, such as instancing, lack of a significant death penalty, marked questgivers, etc. that have plagued and ruined the MMOG genre.

Darkfall isn't for you.  Why do you feel compelled to voice your disapproval when there are countless sissy, dummied down, watered down, so called MMOGs out there for you to choose from? We purists and so called hardcore enthusiasts have had slim pickings to choose from since the days of classic EQ, UO, and SWG. Give us a freakin break and let us enjoy one MMOG we can call our own.

Are you sure they only want a "niche" market? If I were a dev I would want as many people as possible to play my game. If they want to make money then they need to create a game the majority likes. I have only seen a few times where the devs said damn the masses I will create a game I want to play even if they do not.  Anarchy online comes to mind when I think about this type of attitude and look where that game is now. WOW and EverQuest2 didnt get as popular as they are by not catering to the masses. The point I happen to be of the same opnion as "the masses" dosent matter.

BTW, to answer your other question, I post because I like MMOs and want my opnion heard by future devs so they may base games on what I like, i.e. "the masses"

Ah Ha! it is now 6 post! hmm, or is it 7. Anyway how does that matter? Just because I have never posted until now I don't have a right to? I really hope the game works out for people like yourself so you can enjoy DF. I really do but I also like to voice my thoughts so other people that like the same play style I do can use this information to decide if they want to spend their hard earned cash on DF or not. Having a one sided conversation is not fair to everyone. Besides I like a good debate as much as the next guy.

    The password is join.

Stupid concept Ihmotepp. If this is how you view playing in a virtual world as enjoyable, then I pity you. People like you with this attitude is why communities don't thrive in newer MMOGs. Instead of trying to immerse yourself in a virtual world you want to find ways to ruin the concept because you are worried about losing gear. You whine about ganking then choose to gank yourself with cheesy zerg tactics as naked players. I don't think much of the immature ADD crop of gamers these days but I doubt even they would subscribe to this playstyle for very long.
