How will this not become just a gankfest?

eccotoneccoton Member UncommonPosts: 1,340

So many things seem so appealing about Darkfall. I have read a lot about the game. I have seen some cool videos. However I wonder how will Darkfall not end up just a big gank fest.

I solo a lot in mmos and in their description they say play as you want total freedom even be a loner. How will this be possbile with the totally open pvp play. Seems like it will be hard to get anything done. Seems like totally open pvp does not compliment total freedom the way the game is claiming. Can anyone clarify this a bit for me?

it wont because if you start to kill alot of people your get hunted down by guards and other npc's and that wont be fun so people should have some common sense not to do it too much.

  • imbantimbant Member Posts: 1,291

Really will just have to wait for release to see what happens.  The game mechanics of the allignment system, how big the world is, and (in a sandbox) how the rules of the server develop among players will determine if it is a gankfest.

Will it be harsh and filled with people trying to kill you?  Yup.  But there will also be ways to fight back at them as they have just as much to lose.

Really is no good answer to support gankfest or not gankfest...i would wait till release.

For this topic you cant say wait till open beta, since chars would probably be wiped and your actions wont be remembered so more people will probably be a little more open with their targets =)

Sounds like it isnt meant to be solo friendly... it should read, "Freedom to do anything as long as you are with guildies or dont mind dying alot".

Always stength in numbers...but the friendly fire aspect gives the solo player a chance to outplay in a 1v3 situation where position matters and the group has to worry about hitting eachother.

Not like in the carebear themeparks of Wow WAr etc where the group can just magically lock on to the target and fling fireballs and amazingly pass right through their allies unharmed and then take a direct line towards a dodging player.

hooorray for the return to challenging non-handholding gameplay!

Good question.  In my opinion, it is one of the only legitimate concerns for this game.

First of all, the world is huge.  What this means is that players will tend to congregate towards main cities, player cities, and other places that are well suited for people.  So if you like to explore and go out solo, there is a good chance you won't run into too many people (depending on how far away from the social-hubs you get).  The people that you will run across also have a low probability of being a ganker.  The reason for this is simple.  There is a far greater chance that someone will find targets to gank near the social-hubs, therefore said person would be inclined to also be near the social-hubs.

You cannot really tell another person's strength.  When you mouse over them, their name will appear, but that's about all that you'll get.  When deciding to gank someone, it'll truly be a big decision (especially far away from social-hubs!) because you won't know if you are about to get destroyed yourself and lose all of your stuff.  True gankers won't worry about this, however.  The semi-gankers will.

There are some penalties for ganking.  When you gank someone of the same faction, you lose standing in your faction (I use the word faction, but its meaning is more along the lines of "race").  When you lose enough faction, you are basically branded a "Player-Killer".  This means that guards in the main cities will kill you on site.  Therefore, the life of a PKer is a very dangerous one.  Novice players will simply not be able to manage this kind of gameplay (no matter how "hardcore" they think they are).  It is said that it is easy to become hated, but it is very hard to get your standing back up to normal.

The game features FPS-style combat and is not gear or totally skill dependent.  Someone with no skills and gear could take down someone with many skills and good gear.  Granted, this assumes the new player is good at fighting and the long-term player is bad at it.  Your personal skill will have a far greater role in determining whether or not someone else kills you.

Because the game is immersion-focused, it'll be hard to spot you!  Seriously, they have to be able to find you to gank you :).  If someone starts fighting you, you could potentially run away, hide in grass, hide behind a rock, etc.  Since you will be out in the wilderness most-likely, I would suggest learning how to camouflage yourself and you will maximize your chances of not being ganked.

Overall, many people think they are "hardcore".  That is the one downside of this game (the community).  In order to succeed as the game they are trying to make (not numbers of subscriptions, but immersion), there needs to be ganking, but not so much that there isn't a "world" anymore, but instead a bigger version of counter-strike.  I don't think it will be too big a problem though.  Darkfall's mechanics make the life of a PKer very hard (as it should be), but it can be done.  Honestly looking at the game, I would say that you need to be nice to other players.  I think most killings (outside of guild-city pvp) will occur because people will talk smack to each other and will seek revenge.  I'm not saying that you won't ever be ganked though.  You should note that it will definitely happen at some point.  You should see this as a positive though.  It adds danger and mystique to the world.  The interactions amongst players will be what makes this a good or bad MMO.

I really don't think that this will be the case, assuming the world is as the devs have been saying.

    Yes indeed.

  • nickelpatnickelpat Member Posts: 661

Hate to say it, but yes it will probably be a gankfest. It's easy to tell a high level from a low one (gear) and just standing out exit points to cities. A high level character could just mangle any newb coming out.

This is where I see Darkfall failing, newbs will get very frustrated and irritated and not stay. It's no fun when you get a nice new piece of gear, then some high level idiot decides to one hit you. Skills will always matter, higher one skill the more damage that weapon does. As gear still matters, as the better gear the more damage it will do. In the end I see any new subscribers quitting unless they find a veteran with high skills to follow them around while they quest.

I'm all for open PvP, although semi-open PvP. Say, I can't be killed by anyone 3 levels higher than myself and I can't kill any 3 levels lower. At least this way it makes it so you can't be owned by every other asinine player who just wants to make people angry.

If the PvP is truly completely open like this, I doubt I'll play Darkfall more than a month. It takes all the fun from an MMORPG when you can't progress because of PvP. When you get a new piece of gear and immediately die each time. Also keep in mind, not only will these high skill players be camping exits from social hubs, they'll be camping quest mob locations and other quest locations (say a chest or an item you need to find). In the end, unless there is some kind of limit to PvP, I won't play long. I want to play without getting ganked every three seconds.

    1. In order to answer your question, define "gank" or "gankfest"

    2. The freedom the game advertises comes from the fact that there are minimal artificial limits to behaviour as enforced by the game itself. You are "free" to solo; if other players choose to make that difficult for you, that isn't the game's fault.

With that in mind, some of the game's mechanics may make life easier for soloers, like a large open world, large draw distance, skill-based "stealth" and detection, skill-based combat, alignment system, etc.

To be honest, if you are concerned about it then the game is not for you.

What you might not understand (and many others) is that there are people out there who want an open world to wage war as they see fit. Being ganked is not a big deal as they will grow strong, gather allies and do the same.

So it very well could be a gankfest. But for those players who like this thing, it is a breath of fresh air.

    - There are no levels

    - There are "skill points", but they will advance relatively quickly (if not linearly), and the difference between skill, say... 40 and skill 99 is much different than "level 40 vs. level 80" in WoW.

    - Can you kill a person with an M4 and 100 armor, with a USP and no armor in CS? Can fleets of coordinated T1 frigates kill battleships in EVE? It's not like trying to fight a level 70 in WoW when you're level 30, or trying to fight Naxx epic geared people in 5-man blues pre-BC.

    - The world is large, non-linear, and non-quest driven. There are no quests you "have" to do. There are no mobs you "have" to slay. Nearly every player kills VanCleef in the Deadmines in their teens level on their way to leveling up in WoW. There is no "leveling up" in DF. Pick a random direction, walk in it, fight whatever you find to skill up. Or harvest whatever you find to skill up for crafting. People camping the goblin cave? Go deep into the forest and fight boars.

The most important thing in the game is player (your) personal skill.

As long as the game provides a safe place for brand new players to learn how to play (according to the developers, the starting newbie zones are the most heavily guarded; the only place in the game to feature "undefeatable" guards), and there are "intermediate" areas with some degree of protection (racial cities with guards) to allow players avenues of advancing skill levels and acquring equipment, that's what's needed.

at the start it will ABSOLUTELY be a gankfest for a few weeks. People have little to lose since they're just starting out, and if they don't have a seperate server for NA's in Eu(b/c if NA's are allowed to play in the Eu servers, you'll magically see their server population's cut in half when the NA version launches, leaving like 5 sparsly populated servers that aventurine has to pay for (can't do server merges when people OWN things like castles and houses)), all the NA's (more than half the population)will kill randomly b/c they have nothing to lose, and when the NA servers come out when all the NA's leave, it will be chaos again (this is, once again, assuming they don't have an NA server located in EU that will be transferred to NA).

After that period, things should settle down, being evil is going to be tough b/c you're alienated from entering any cities other than the ARAC guilds, the inns/banks made around chaos stones simply for criminals, and that city that's made for criminals. You are banned from entering anywhere else (all npc cities, most player made cities). Also, you'll have a target on you're back from anyone who's not in an ARAC.

But I'll be in an ARAC, there are racial wars in RL, why the F3CK do you want them in your fake worlds too? So all criminals that aren't on our blacklist are welcome in our ARAC guild, come all you weary

EDIT: if you don't like the gankfest, join a clan/center you're activities in NPC cities/travel in groups/don't go down populated routes. Seriously guys this problem is circumvented, don't try to take it off just b/c you don't like it, there are ways around it!!!!

srsly, there are thousands of games that are "single player with online features"/mmos that are MADE for their tastes. If you're smart you can avoid dying a lot, and if you're smart you can do without a guild, but the key to that is being smart. Freedom entails you can do a lot of things and you shouldn't bar the ability to pk freely just b/c someone likes to play a game solo/doesn't like dying, you can not die and play solo as long as you're smart about it, but you shouldn't limit the freedom of those who love pk just b/c you don't.

groupers don't like soloing, they didn't make soloing impossible did they?

nice post I would hope you are right, but.. have you played a full loot mmo?

as soon as the prospect of taking other peoples stuff comes it corrupts people. my personal experience is only RL/long term friends are those you can trust. if you are equiped with something worth having expect to get attacked on site by even a usually friendly person.

I would hope aDventurine would tweak the allignment/race/faction system to balance it. I would rather is was generally a faction/race war, but with the possibility of betrayal. how much this is so depends on how the system is implemented, how much betrayal is punished.

I have to agree with you.

In Wow I got ganked all the time when I tried to finnish a quest. The sad thing was I couldn`t even talk to the players that ganked me to tell them to stop. I tried several days to make that quest but I gave up. The ganking was just to much.

The quest I `m talking about was called something like "capture a bunker" in a place called Alterac Valley. I really hate when PvP is forced upon us solo players when all we want to do is questing in peace. I`m glad you took this up because I think there is alot of players who want to quest in peace and alone in places like Alterac Vally.

So hail to you, no forced PvP in Darkfall, Warhammer and WoW

i heard the world is quite big.  that being said i have seen quite a few aspects of the game that will reduce the ganking.  One thing i do hope (hope so much so that i may even do it) is to find a tree overlooking a road.  Climb it, and rob anyone coming down the road

anyway big worlds (and its a skill based game) usually mean if your getting ganked just move to another area.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

So hail to you, no forced PvP in Darkfall, Warhammer and WoW

finally a carebare, I want your serious opinion, why do you pay 15$ a month for an mmo and solo when you could just buy single player games, who's pve are atleast 20x as fun?

Anyway, if you don't want to PvP in WoW play on a PvE server, why B1TCH about it and try to take away other people's right to pvp. Every game listed on the left is suited to you're interests, other than WAR, please go play one of those, this is the only game that caters to pvpers (though it also has a robust crafting system, and a robust pve system (mobs have deep AI, and once you kill a rare mob, it never comes back), if you're smart about pveing you can not ever pvp, but you have to be smart about, don't just go around and complain how life is tough for you and then attempt to deny pvpers their freedom to do what they like.)

Groupers don't like soloing, they don't try and stop you from soloing....

Lol according to this I'm bipolar :O

You have to many missconceptions, gear in DF won't be like in WoW where the high level stuff is shiny and stuff so no it won't be easy to tell an experienced player from a new player or atleast not as easy as in other games, and it has been stated that a highly skilled (as an has good reflexes etc.) new player can defeat an ok veteran so your second comment is also false

Gear in this game is not important since it is easily accessable, or so it is said, and there are NO one shots here as the devs have already said it and yes skill level and gear do matter but not as much as other games as in WoW so don't base your opinion on games like that

I'm all for open PvP, although semi-open PvP. Say, I can't be killed by anyone 3 levels higher than myself and I can't kill any 3 levels lower. At least this way it makes it so you can't be owned by every other asinine player who just wants to make people angry.

There are NO levels in DF so your idea is completely stupid for lack of a better word, I don't mean to be offensive so sorry if I do come out like that

Quests are not important in DF

Sorry just had to respond to this post since it is so misinformed, if you want an opinion that is educated about what the game has PROMISED to be than read demalus' post, and as far as my opinion on your question goes, yes the game will be a gankfest in the beginning but things will settle down as players form alliances and gain more experience

I have to agree with you.

In Wow I got ganked all the time when I tried to finnish a quest. The sad thing was I couldn`t even talk to the players that ganked me to tell them to stop. I tried several days to make that quest but I gave up. The ganking was just to much.

The quest I `m talking about was called something like "capture a bunker" in a place called Alterac Valley. I really hate when PvP is forced upon us solo players when all we want to do is questing in peace. I`m glad you took this up because I think there is alot of players who want to quest in peace and alone in places like Alterac Vally.

If you are referring to hotjazz as a carebear than I think you misunderstood his post, he was being sarcastic because Alterac Valley is a pvp battle ground so what he is trying to say is that worrying about getting killed in DF is as dumb as worrying about getting killed in AV because you will obviously get ganked one time or another
