The graphics can be quite intense so a good rig will benefit you a lot here. Depending on how long ago you tried it, not only did you miss out on high end graphics but they may have been improved, too.

There is a large shared world. Heroes are in Paragon City, villains on the Rogue Islands. They are broken up into zones, and between zones you use a Tram or a Ferry. I'm not sure what you mean by "smooth" - there are load screens between zones if you are referring to dynamic loading. But if you just mean visually, well I guess that depends on your graphics settings. It's very smooth and quite realistic to me.

Although the world is quite large, the vast majority of missions take place in instances. This allows them to scale the number and difficulty of enemies up or down based on your settings and how many are on your team. It also allows something like "defeat all" missions, and avoiding the problem of needing to kill a boss that someone else just offed.

"Gear" is entirely secondary. You choose your costume from the start (and can adjust it any way you like at one of several tailor shops, from like millions of choices). Your powerset is chosen from the start and cannot change. For example, if your character shoots fire, it will always shoot fire - you can't change to ice later. Same with more traditional gear, like an Axe or a Shield - if that's his powerset, it's what he is. (Though a fairly new feature gives you lots of options for how a weapon may look, and that can change like a costume.)

You gain a new power every 2 levels, which you can choose from your primary powerset (e.g. Claws attacks) or your secondary power set (e.g. Ninjitsu defense), or some shared "power pools" (e.g. Flying).

The only "gear" is enhancements for those powers, which increase the accuracy, or damage, or range, or duration of a stun, or jump height, or any of a bunch of other aspects of those powers. Although these occaisonally drop from enemies, the main enhancments are available from stores all over.

An extra bonus, which is by no means necessary, can be gained by using "inventions" to create special enhancements. Chasing that type of loot can be a sort of endgame, and a way to keep developing your character. But as I say, it's by no means necessary as standard store-bought enhancements are are quite fine.

Compared to old SWG I personally find this plays much much faster. And the instance use is different, but I rather like it when I can get a mission to take out a boss and don't have to stand in line behind 3 other people who need to get him too.

Most of the pve content is different for villains and heroes (the game mechanics are exactly the same though). Only the last few issues the devs have been releasing shared pve zones. Pvp zones are shared between heroes and villains, because it's mostly heroes vs villains :p

One of the strong point of CoX is the teaming for various reasons. You'll find it very easy to find pick-up teams on most servers. Max 8 persons in a team + spawns adjust to team size: teaming is probably the way to go for xp and direct credits. Every AT (archetype = class) can solo, some a lot better than others, but mission difficulty is adjustable.

Population is server dependent, there's 2 servers (Virtue and Freedom) that often cap the server limit.

As far as "gear" and "instances" go you would have something related to it.

    However, this isn't WoW.

It doesn't look like WoW, it doesn't feel like WoW and most importantly it doesn't work like WoW.

Refering to those 2 particular points, gear would be enchancements. you can craft em or buy em. Bought stuff expires after you outlevel em. Crafted stuff doesnt. Every basic power is well, basic. Enchancing it to make it work the way you want it to is what makes it special.

About instances, missions are almost completely instanced. It provides a controlled environement which you can customize with a difficulty slider. Most people only use the +1 or +2 level mob option but there is also an option for bigger sized mobs and a chance for higher tier mobs.

As for "running around" you get access to a real travel power at 14 and to a temporary fly power at 5. That one is only slightly faster than the sprint one you get at lvl one but it gets you over obstacles. Lasts about 1 or 2 hours of constant use.

    Hope this helped.

Just thought of a few things to add.

Regarding the gear esthetics, you can customize your costume or select a ready made one.

About the instance challenge/reward part. Starting in issue 13 there is a merit system. doing a strike force will award merits. You will get more merits if you were especially fast. Those merits can buy just about anything from inspirations (temp buffs) to rare set recepies.
