If it succeeds with everything as touted by Tasos, it will be a gigantic boon to the Indy dev scene, and give a boost to games like Earthrise and Mortal Online.
If it fails, whether by being broken, being much less than what Tasos describes, or some other major problem which impacts it's success, then it will set the Indy dev scene back even further than it is now.
Whether major mmo makers decide to take chances with sandbox and other "different" types of mmos will depend alot on what occurs on the 22nd.

I dont know...I agree on the upside. A successful Darkfall will help other indie companies secure funding, publishing, and inspire consumer confidence. Not sure about the downside though, as a game that has worn the title of "vaporware" (deserved or not isnt the point) for such a long time, may have low expectations from the industry. If it fails, all of these fans will be looking for the next holy grail.
Actualy now that i think about it..if it did fail after all this time there would be murders in the streets and chaos everywhere. maybe then the devs will learn to stop messing with our heads.
i think if it does launch, one month after post launch you will see a 50-50 split down the middle love it or hate it response.
Just like every mmo prior to this one, there is a community waiting for it, and once the game fails to meet expectations, it will be treated like the plague.
Current Games:
I disagree. MMOs have long development cycles giving the public plenty of time to study the info (screenshots, videos, features, etc.) released on the official game site. This info will determine the fan-following and hype leading up to the release. The game will then further succeed or fail based on word-of-mouth reviews; not based on the size of the company.
Imagine if it did hit BIG and other companies backed those other projects and not just a "pvp game like Darkfall" or a "PvE game like WoW".
Who knows, maybe they would even one day elect a Black Man President in the United States.
"TO MICHAEL!"
I wanna live where you live coz there already is murder and chaos in the streets where I live, so nout new there then.
Asbo
You don't live down the street by Mythic Headquarters, Sigil, or Funcom Industries do you?
Sorry... couldn't resist.
I got it.. Wall Street.
"TO MICHAEL!"
So the Jan 22nd launch... is that for Europe and the US launch will be later? I saw that it said we are welcome to play, but does that mean on European servers?
Yes.
Was there any word on when American servers would be up?
Least we wont get a paided beta
No.

Unless there is already a game out there that has been in development for a long time and what Darkfall does has absolutely no impact on their continued development because much like EQ they have a vision for what they want their game to be.
Me I been waiting for a game like the one you described to come along. But unfortunately I don't think Darkfall is it for me. Too much sword/sorcery type stuff to be original.
One thing I will gauarntee...this game will be a complete disaster. The screaming fanbois of today will be the vitriol filled haters of tomorrow. Take down the names and wait until the supposed release and see who are screaming the loudest about how the game sucks. Just like DnL, , just like Vanguard. The people with a shred of logic and common sense know this to be true.
Those who get there hopes up the highest will be the ones that are the most disappointed. No expectations..no let downs. Unreasonable expectations... meltdown in the making.
I'm one of the folks that has been watching this game with interest, i'm also one of those that was one of the screaming fanbois of Vanguard, you won't see any vitriol filled hatred from me, just disappointment, and a promise to re-evaluate it when i'm sick of what i'm playing now(Vanguard), and a promist to see what Darkfall has to offer, with perhaps the same promise of re-evaluating it if it isn't what i'm expecting..
"We aren't going to ... Period. End of statement."
ya. ok. whatever.
but what do i know, i'm only a vanbois i'm told.
I tend to view it the other way around myself. Eventually someone will release a mmorpg that redefines the genre that much should be clear to anyone with a functioning brain.
Every failure takes us closer to that game, will it be Darkfall, nobody knows but sooner or later it will happen. It would be foolish assume that just because other recent releases have been half assed failures that the next one will be.
As well deserved as that may be..it won't happen. The suckers will line up for the next big hype, just like they always do.
P.T. Barnum: There's a sucker born every minute.
Not saying all darkfall fans are suckers. Hell, I'm a darkfall fan, even if I'm somewhat dubious about it. I hope it ends up being a blockbuster, but I wouldn't bet on it.
It's like betting on your favorite hometeam even when you know they are outmatched....
Fine for armchair quarterbacking and hanging with friends..but a bad idea when money is on the line.

And then find out he's not a citizen and either strip his presidency, or ammend the constitution so that the Demolition man prophecy can really come true by paving the way for "the Governator" to become president.

Don't feel bad, I'm still toiling around in VG and still digging it.. But..and A BIG BUTT IT IS.. I never got my hopes up for VG because I didn't learn about it until release week. I had Zero expectations, therefore I had ZERO disappointment.
Those that have the wood in the pants about Darkfall if/when it releases are the ones that are going to be screaming the loudest on these very boards when/if it doesn't turn out to be what was advertised (sic)/released. It is easy to to pick out the 5-7 names who are the most fervent posters on this particular board. Expect 3-5 of these posters (and many more lurkers) to flip the table just like the VG/McQuaid man crushers did after the VG release.

I believe you just summed up the MMO community in a nice tight package.
Hell consumers in general.
All hail the mighty dollar, God gimme more than my neighbor.
Jones out!

Take this shit to the USATODAY.Com boards. There is no place for political shit here.

LOL. Lighten up and stop being a forum Nazi. I just used one silly point in response to another silly point. It was light hearted. I could care less about politics.

For two posts it's light hearted, the third post is an invitation to the Rush Limbaugh and/or Al Franken --ites to invade these boards. We don't need that crap here. The MMO boards are vitriol enough as it is (choice of game not with standing) to not attract the political hack jobs.
Dialogue of the opposing genre interests are enough, please don't allow any political crowbar to wedge their way into any of these threads. As much hate as any of the other polarized factions of any other game argument, it will only be escalated to level we have yet to imagine if you invite the politico into these forums.
Sorry to be un-lighthearted, but I hate political views as much as I hate alabama football fans.
The problem here is that players have the impression that the developers are making the game to make the players happy.
The reality is that developers are people that are making the game as a job - to make money.
Because of this, it is wise to tread carefully.
That said, I do hope Darkfall does well. I am just treading carefully, because when you look at the situation realizing the truth of Moneys role in the development of the game, there are legitimate reasons to question their actions. You have to wonder the real motive behind some of their decisions...
To hoping that they are able to prove me wrong
Making a game, and Producing a game are two separate tasks... most developers dont understand and appreciate this, and as such they fail when it comes time to sell the game. This is why the industry is controlled by several large publishers.
