Starting new... finding groups

If i start the game now with a new character...

Will i be able to do the group content along the way, or will it be extremely hard for me to find groups because i do not know anyone ingame yet...

I dont think i can enjoy this game without being part of a great community and having a lot of grouping fun

I started less than a month ago. I have had no problems finding groups when I looked for them except for The Old Forest area.  Even then I probably could have found a group had I started one.  "/LFF  Hunter looking to do quest Haunted Forest and others..."  Of course, find all 8 of those flowers is a pain.

I started playing in July and I have been unable to find a group for anything since about midway into the Lonelands (around 20th level or so, I guess).   Just no one around at all, and those that are aren't very friendly...(worst community in an MMORPG I've ever seen, very stuck up)

Then again, I play after 1 am Central time, I guess there aren't many night owls in this game, or at least my server (Landroval)

Think it depends what server you are on. I play on Gladden-US and the LFF tool and channel is bad IMO.

The Gladden server itself has a global channel (made by players) that alot of people use and once I found it getting groups was as easy for me in Lotro as it was in WOW.

I would reccomend going to lotro.com and checking the forum for your server to see if they have a global channel. If you play on the server Gladden type < /joinchannel glff >.

As much as I love the game the LFG tools are horrid but being in a very active kinship and using the global channel I never need to use it.

Actually maybe I am just to dumb to figure out how to use the LFG tools but if I am then I am sure others are as well. Hope this helps ya

Well, I was just playing now and I actually saw one guy LFF in Evendim. Took him 45 minutes, but he finally got it!

Still, I think that is a problem - too many private chat channels, especially among long time/original players who then completely ignore the public ones (which are dead or just new people).

Though I still think there just aren't very many players. It's better than it was the months pre-Moria, but still not a crowded game. They need to do a server merge, I think

There is no problem with population and no need for merges... the servers are to crowded right now, thats why they do daily restarts... You are playing on the unoffical RP server so  maybe thats part of your problem (or maybe you are the problem). If you play during the night you should probably play on Elimdir since there is alot of oceanic players there... The community is the best Ive ever seen in a MMO and its pretty wierd that you have an opposite experience from everyone else playing the game but as I said, maybe the problem is somewhere else.... Anyway ,getting a good kinship is the best way to meet good people but they will probably just invite people who seem mature and friendly.

Getting a group in Evendim when most people is either exploring Moria or is trying the new classes isnt that strange...

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

No offense, but its pure instanity to say this game needs merges. The servers are packed and actually crash from time to time due to very high popularity on all realms. For that reason they added daily server restarts and short 30 minutes maintaince.

What is needed is a better LFF system.

LFFs should be LEVEL-specific, rather than REGION-specific, imo.

Turbine should offer a range of global LFFs as follows:

    LFF1 - Levels 1 to 15
    LFF2 - Levels 10 to 25
    LFF3 - Levels 20 to 35
    LFF4 - Levels 30 to 45
    LFF5 - Levels 40 to 55
    LFF6 - Levels 50 to 60

that could be checkbox activated (or inactivated).

The level "overlaps" are intentional to cover quests/instances in the "tween" range.

You could post to any of these LFFs your toon is within, but you could only AUDIT the LFFs your toon is not in.

As an example, if I am playing my level 17 Lore-Master, I would perhaps have LFF2 and LFF3 turned on, and also keep LFF6 turned on in case I hear something that my level 58 main might want to jump into.

This system would screen out the global LFFs you are not interested in (i.e., outside of your level range), but allow you to broadcast to all players within your level range (assuming they had the indicated LLF(s) turned on) that you are, say, forming a group for Garth Agarwen -- REGARDLESS of where they are located. Players could thus "hear you" in Bree or Lone Lands or North Downs or wherever.

Most player-made global LLF channels are useless for lower-level players because they turn into OOC chat channels for the 50+ player crowd. At least that is what I've seen so far.

The only servs that might need a merge are the euro rp ones, other than that snowbourne is packed.

Everyone is gettign their main to lvl 60 and getting em set peices/a goat/ getting a good legendary item atm. But in a month or so a lot of ppl will start working on that rk or warden they played for 5 hours when noone from their kin was on.

As long as this game adds new classes with each expansion there will be people in starter zones.

    I dont agree.

You see I have lots of characters at various levels. I want to see all adds for LFF for all level ranges and to consider logging on a different character. One common LFF do the trick I believe.

Exactly what i experienced. The low level players are almost all 4th and 5th alts of hardcore players with several level 50+ chars. It was absolutely no fun.

I've just started playing around 2 weeks ago.  I have leveled two characters to level 17 and have had no problems getting Fellowships going at all.  I have only grouped with one guildmate so far... all the others were PUG.

I've actually been very surprised as I was expecting the lower levels to be empty.  of course about 60-70% of the folks I see are Wardens or Runekeepers but since both classes can dual role (DPS/Heal or Tank/DPS) it works out pretty good.

yep... I have had little trouble find groups/pugs for this game.

Depending on the time/date/server, the world may be a little more or less populated than usual, so you have to look out for that.

And this is easily the friendliest and most helpful community I have ever experienced ( and I have played a lot of MMOs)

I too am a newb to this game. Bought it after I got tired of playing WAR. I have had NO problems finding groups, excuse me, I mean fellowships. The one or two times I didn't get an invite right away, I started a group, and people joined in quick fasion.

As far as terrible, mean or elitist communities go, WAR's community, if you can call it that, was way way worse than LOTR is. The advice channel is super helpful. The older players who have started alt's have been very helpful and friendly.

I'm loving this game so far. I don't mind being a newb either.

You would be able to view them all just by turning them all "on". For me, that's way too much chat, but the option to listen to them all would be there if you wanted it.

  • Currently you should be quite good for population due to the new classes.

In general the top 3 population servers it has been spotty at times but consistently doable over the life of the game.   I think you get a lot more alts and people who mess around in LOTRO than other DIKU MMO (ie. EQ clones)

I just started a week ago and play on the Windfola.  I haven't had much trouble finding people for quests.  I only actually had to use the LFF channel once to get a group, the rest I just picked up groups as I saw others post while I soloed.  So far I've had a great time with the community, everyone is freindly and not much bickering and yelling in the big channels.  Even when I posted a mistake in the chat thinking that we got horses at level 20 no one made fun of me.  Just corrected me then laughed when I said that was a lot of walking.

But overall haven't had any problems, probably because I do a bunch of the group quests alone since I complete almost every quest I outleveled many of my quests.  Also do all the deeds which adds up in exp.
