Tasos' arrogance will....blah blah blah

imbantimbant Member Posts: 1,291

This seems to be one of the latest arguments used to bring down DF, and honestly I think some people are a little misguided when using it.

Hate to break it to you guys (and I include myself in this) but we are a very small minority of the MMO community that dorks around on forums prerelease and discusses what developers say.  The majority of gamers do not care how the developers talk, hell the majority probably couldnt even tell you the names of the developers of their game.

What people base their purchase on (and continued subscription on) is the quality of the game.

That is it.

So people saying "The arrogance of Tasos will ruin this game"  or "Tasos is hurting his sub numbers every time he gives an interview" are just kidding themselves.

The few people who truly will not play Darkfall purely based on their distaste for Tasos probably wouldnt be playing the game anyways and are frankly just stuck up.  We are talking about video games here, not electing the president.

If the guy (and remember he is one guy out of many in a development team, and not even the lead dev) delivers a quality game then who cares if he is arrogant IN YOUR OPINION.  A lot of people find him confident and honest because he doesn't sugar coat things and isn't afraid of what forum dwellers will say because he knows that wont make or break his game.

January 22nd 2009 - This will determine what people think of the game.  Then it will be how well they continue to maintain the improve the game.

**This thread is to discuss the topic of Tasos' attitude and how it effects the success of the game.  Anything else like graphics, development time, vaporware etc will be off topic**

I actually find him refreshing compared to the other comms coming out of WAR and the rest of the hype.  He comes across as someone who is sick of answering the same questions about the game so he seems to have a no BS and matter of fact tone.

On saying that if DF turns out to be the game we have all wanted and is completely uber and people refuse to play because of what Tasos says then its probably better for all of us because that is plain sad and I don't want to play with sad freaks.

100% agree...and we are far from alone.  I have read so many posts that have stated that people were shocked in a good way after reading his latest interview at the ammount of straight honesty he carries himself with and disregard for remaining all cheery to appease the masses.

It just is not how developers normally talk in interviews and to the public.  And with the way the "pros" have been doing lately...that is nothing but a good thing...since it cant get any worse.

If Darkfall is successful, more than 70% of it's subscribers will have never heard of Tasos, or know anything about any forum, including this one.

They will read a review in PC GAmer Magazine, either in print or online, or see something on Gamespot, and buy the game.

If the reviews are good they'll try it, if not they won't. They will never know there were fanbois on the forums, or trolls, or who Tasos is, or any of that jazz.

is he arrogant?  Thats for people to decide (I think yes.)

Will arrogance hurt a community or game? Thats for people to decide (I think yes.)

    ---

I mean, come on.. in his mmorpg interview he doesn't even have the decency to acknowledge that Darkfall has taken a long while to develop (instead he trivializes the question by relativising it - i.e. "Long compared to who?") i mean.. come on, everyone knows about darkfall.  face the question headon dont sidestep please.

Will arrogance alone doom a game? Thats for people to decide! (I think no)

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

    Exactly.

Seriously if you think otherwise...history has proved you wrong with past games after release.

Although 82% of all statistics are made up...thats the only thing i will nitpick about your post

Its just that people are so hard up for any kind of info about the game that they hang on to every word he say's. And he is the voice of DF so much of the hate will be directed towards him. Even if it is unjust or unfair, he is only doing his job.

I have to disagree.  Not because you are wrong...you are right.  Who cares who Tasos is or what he says?  Not most of the gamers.  But it does matter.  The forums, ingame chat, and all that other media sets the tone of the way the game is talked about.

Take AoC of WAR for instance.  I thought AoC was a great (but buggy / needed more content and dev time) game.  The forums and ingame chat was so overly negative that I and all my friends quit playing.  WAR delivered (so I hear  - I didn't like their game design) on what they said they would.  Yet people complain because it doesn't have X feature of WoW, or shouldn't have copied Y feature of WoW.  The negative tone drove people away.

Lets assume DarkFall launches and delivers on 75% of their game features and promises.  That's a big assumption from where I'm at, but that's another conversation.  Tasos and his pompous attitude will continue to create a negative atmosphere on the forums and in general chat ingame.  That will drive people away.  Especially when that negative energy creator is the game figurehead, giving all the presentations and demos on TV and the such.

Imagine an asshole trying to sell you something.  Are you going to buy it?  Nope.  That's Tasos.  He will be undoing what the good word-of-mouth will do.

What do you talk about ? tough questions got an straight an tough answer, Tasos did well in interview. Only persons who deserve it feel offended.

Its good to tell things by the name and refreshing  to see him doing it.

He did name good things in the interview too  that created a positive atmosphere and since his interview a positive energy took over even MMORPG  DF forums.

You know a real man did the interview naming the good and the bad  not a marketing trained robot to sell things with a wrong smile..

Some vaportrolls/snakes had long enough put the mask of a "critic" on.

He is like MJ, bold and arrogant. And with nothing to back him up, except his own arrogance. Which is pretty absurd, but appeals to the young minds, until it's too late.

I think what people that claim Tasos is arrogant are actually saying is that he is annoyingly (<- word?) evasive in his response to questions.  Couple that with the delays totaled in years, that sort of works against him and arrogance is the tag placed on the feelings he evokes in people.

There is frustratingly little information to be had about the game.  Less is coming from the company.  I mean if Jan 22 09 is the date its time for them to step up and release 5k beta keys and lift the NDA to boot.

I still feel as if I know very litte about the game.  I want to try it first.  I must say all the delays and my recent experience with FUNCOM has made me gunshy. If they want my 50$ upfront and 15$ per month after, Ill need to taste the flesh first. Pound of Flesh before credit card info, just that simple.

Honesty?  Are you kidding me?  When he handed out his professional resume to the Greek media so they could access his creditials, people went to work.  Every single title he claimed to have worked on, his name couldn't be found.  His response.  He was "misquoted".  How the HELL do you misquote yourself on a resume?  There were so many holes in his resume that if you held swiss cheese next to his resume you couldn't tell the difference.  Please, don't use his honesty as a value point for DFO.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

I dont even think he was arrogant in the latest interview, defensive yes, but not arrogant.

But that doesnt matter, if the game is good people will play it.

It would be hard for you to find a MMO company more hated then SOE (myself not included) but if SOE came out with an incredible game people would play it, and yes, even you who look for openings in any thread to distill your hatred of SOE would play it.

Tasos could claim to be the second coming for all I care, as long as the game is good. He's just setting himself up for a harder fall if things don't go swimmingly for DF.

Let's just say I know for a fact that they know how hostile the community on this site has treated Darkfall.   I would probably be somewhat of a prick talking to someone who runs a site that has trashed me.  This thread is living proof.
