What are the good melee oriented classes?

I tend to like playing melees, although I am also quite happy to mix in some magic or archery.   I will probably spend about 90% of my time soloing, as that's just the way it works for me during the workweek.  Also, are there any support classes that are under-played and hence tend to be in-demand for grouping?  Also, are there any races that are generally better to play as melee-oriented types?

Although I am wondering about melee-oriented classes in general, I am also curious about the Shaman class.  What little description I've seen looks interesting, but can they deal melee damage, or are they basically limited to casting?

Finally, does this game allow for alts, so that I can explore from among a few classes/races before choosing a main?

Thanks in advance for any help.

any tanks are good.  i really enjoyed my war.  with its bow shot and crazy attack buffs but most people like the pally at lvl 50.

as for light fighters.  i would go with rogue/monk and bard just does everything.

shaman, go with bear or rakur.

you got a good number of character slots per server so you could easily make every class in the game.  Yeah it is good for alts.  Also the world being huge means that you can start in many unique different areas.

If you solo 90% of the time, then don't pick warrior or rogue.  Pally and SK are fine and tank are usually in demand for groups.  Monk, ranger, bard would be the dps melee option.  Bard is usually overplayed, but every group would love to have one anyway.  Monk just got nerfed a tad too much recently, and they are underplayed from what I've seen.  Good wipe recovery with a monk, but most group don't take that into consideration when recruiting.  Ranger are flexible, but don't bring much if anything unique to the group as such are interchangable by any other dps classes.  As for Shaman, bear and wolf shaman are melee oriented, but as healers, their dps is considerably lower than other classes.  Healers don't get killed easily, especially cleric and bear shaman, but it does take a long time to kill anything.
