This game is released

ghaianaghaiana Member UncommonPosts: 106

I find it strange that MMORPG.com says this game is upcoming. It's not. It's released in part of Europe. Boxes are for sale in stores. Or is anything that has not been released in the USA considered as being not released???

I was pretty happy to see a MMO released in Europe before the USA for once...finally a company that takes Europe serious as game market...

Well, Aion is also released in Korea, and that has not moved either, so I guess that they wait for the US release before they move it...

mmorpg.com, while serving an international  community, are very much US based. It appears much of the information relates to US releases and figures, rather than international.

Regarding spellborn's release status however, it's not fully released in europe. It's available in a small portion of europe, less than half of the european countries. All the rest are having to wait on Acclaim, along with the US.

Less than a quarter even. Much less when you consider it did not really release in Scandanavia yet. Spellborn is really at the mercy of its publishers. Hope Acclaim will do a better job.

It is released in Germany,  France and the Benelux, which I would hardly call a small part of Europe gamewise...and not really released doesn't exist. If a game is only released in the USA, no one says it's not really released. How come when games are released in other parts of the world, they are suddenly not really released...?

It is, especially since these communities are seperated by language barriers. German and French speaking people have maybe no reason to complain and can consider the game released, but we from the Benelux are at the receiving end. Beyond the starter zone the game is deserted, because the game has not really been released yet...oh... gamewise...

Just a few facts and thoughts:

Many germans, french and beneluxians are playing on the international server (it´s called that way to mock you), where the common language (you probably guessed it) is english.

According to a recent OECD study, Germany, France and the Benelux countries make up for 42% of the number of european broadband subscribers. That´s the biggest share of the market. The only important country missing, that would add another 15% is the UK. But the developers obviously didnt have a choice. They wouldnt have given up on such an important market. I guess they had to cede them to Acclaim if they wanted a publishing contract for the US at all.

If a small company with a small budget wants to have a smooth start of their MMoRpg without constant server crashes, players not being able to log in, ... (oh the horror stories I remember) it might not be such a bad idea, to have different countries start at different times. At least when you start your game your experience will be great and there will be a lot of players who speak your language.

[Troll] The UK of course is f**ed. They have to endure american players, the servers will probably be located in the US and they have to wait until Acclaim gets it shit together. But then - soon you wont be able to afford broadband internet connection or a monthly fee calculated in euro anymore anyway. [/Troll]

Meridian 59, DAOC, EQ, Horizons, EQ2, CoH, WoW, Guildwars, Vanguard, TabulaRasa, AoC, WAR, TCoS ...

Well, there are quite a few scandinavian players (and there gonna be more when the boxes become available) in the "international" server and this is a fairly important market too, I think.

  • watto112watto112 Member UncommonPosts: 31

Sweden has the most computers per capita in the world, so that ought to be an even bigger number. Plus everybody has broadband connections. Then again there only 9mil. of us, so we might only make a small dent in the percentage

By the by, i think it sux that the rest of the world, or at least Europe, don't start at the same time. WTF

  • PapadamPapadam Member Posts: 2,102

Seems like there is alot of Swedish players! Maybe they should open a server for us ;)

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

    <Mod edit>

and the point of this ridiculous reply is? also its not just 3 countries where the game has been released, do u even know what the benelux stands for? damn think before you type.. benelux = holland, belgium and luxembourg. and i agree that the benelux, germany and france are not a small part of europe. just look at the huge list of german and french speaking servers in WoW. french/german communities are huge in most games, and the dutch speaking communities can be found in just about any game too.
also i see posts about scandinavians playing...
also i disagree about your comparison of US/Japan. Europe is part of the western world with the US, we have waaay more in common then we have with the Japanese. just face it that the European community on this site is just as big as the american community. no need to be a jerk about it

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

I haven't had the time to follow whats going on with Spellborn lately...but with this semi-euro release that I gathered from this thread...is it also availible for download and can U.S download and play on the servers?

It is an U.S based website, so it would make sense as to why it hasn't listed it as released yet.

I know Darkfall will be another game the EU guys will finally catch a break and have released first, but U.S will also be able to download and play on the EU servers on launch day so that could be why it is listed as having a release date.

I think Darkfall is his life. That's the problem.

I'm on board with this one.  I don't understand why this site is considering the game as unreleased.  If it's live, playable, and out of beta...it's released.  Yes, you can play it from the USA, if you'd care to use an appropriately located IP to register the game.  There are players doing it already.

It's frustrating to say the least, when it's clear that a mod came through the thread due to the mod edit/post removal above, that they won't comment or respond to PMs about the fact they're considering a released game to still be in beta.

Out of beta is out of beta.  It's out of beta.  The "beta" that Acclaim will be doing will not change the client *at all*.  It's just for setting up their servers and whatever else, it's going to use the exact same client that EU is using.  This game should be up for "best of 2008" not "most anticipated 2009".

Hmm the mod edit was getting rid of a racist comment - sadly my outraged post with it xD I think the mods here conducted themselves brilliantly in removing that person's post in such a timely manner.

For all intents and purposes TCoS is not released to over half its potential fan base - some countries don't even have a clear publisher.

As this is a predominantly US/English Speaking forum we all must accept that game status will obviously be bias - i.e. Aion is released in the east, yet still is showing up as unreleased on this site.

Yes, US/UK gamers and over half of Europe can proxy into the free client - however it is not determined if there is currently billing address blocking. Even if there isn't would you recommend that these players hand over money and subscribe when they are in breach of the EULA? As technically Spellborn could just revoke their subscription/services to those that are outside of the Frogster/Mindscape territories.

Finally to those of you ripping on Imbant about Darkfall - at least Adventurine are aware which countries constitute Europe - and are even allowing the US fans to be incorporated in to the release legitimately to treat thier whole playerbase equally!

Oh and the beauty of this is that Acclaim is NOT involved

Edit: Also if this game was down as released its alienation and severe cockups with Europe and the IP Blocking fiasco would badly damage its score and rating - Maybe some of the bad feeling will go away when its finally released for EVERYONE.  For me the bad taste is permenant - I cannot play with family and friends that are based in different countries.

    yes they did.

    Launch 1st in europe.

with a focused European launch they could focus on quality of service to European players. Then building on the european success, publishers interested in running the game in the US, Asia  etc would surley appear...

Aion is released in Korea already (is that right?), the western version will follow later.

    Whats so difficult here?

why are European MMO devs committing game publishing suicide these days - Funcom releasing half a game, Spellborn Devs crippling themselves with prohibitive restrictions on server choice based on a skewed vision of european MMO demographics...

    Whats next?

a [insert random EU country] MMO that can only be played under a full moon at winter solstace, with a susbcription model based on the bartering of livestock?

Isn't MMO development hard enough without these guys constantly screwing themselves (and thier potential customers) over?

    /facepalm
