What is DDO?

What is DDO?

Curious?  Bored with your current MMO? Want to try something a little different, maybe outside your comfort zone?  Here is some facts about the game  (if I mess up, longtime players,  please let me know and I'll fix the facts ) to help you with the choice and maybe try to convience you to join our humble little game.

1. The game is designed to be team oriented.  There is solo capablities, but the game it totally slanted towards a party.  However, getting party tends to be fairly easy.

2. The combat system is real time. Unlike LotRO, WoW and others, this game imploys an active combat system, vice the standard push button turn based system that most MMOS have.  That means you need to tap on the mouse button to swing a sword. "clickie" can used, but forthe most part, you hitthe button, you hit something (or try to anyways) If you want a more detailed discription of combat, see Dr. Rock's post (#10) for a better detail.

3. PvP barely exists. In keeping with the party mentality, PvP are in arena settings with a pre set team or in the tavern brawl area.  None mean anything in the game, except bragging rights.

4. Graphics are great. Unlike many games, Turbine spends time to clean up their graphics.  So the game doesn't look two years old.

5. CHaracter Creation is very detailed. Choosing the  way your character looks, it's class, it's stats is very detailed, but easy to use.  Not as detailed as some games, but sits nicely nearthetop of the MMO list.  Turbine has also made the creation window easier to use, and the lowbee area with a better learning curve.  You have total control of your charcter's leveling, deciding what stats are going to be raised, or even if your character will multi class!

6. There are no Open instances. Outsidethe public areas, everything is instanced.  THe good is no one can steal your kills, goodies, loot.  THe bad thing is there is no random help either.  It is expected that you will be in a group in most instances.  On a related note, the LFM (looking For Group) is very easy to use and just about everyone uses it.

7. Spam is at a minium. While you can be spammed on occasion (expect one or two a day) General chat isn't spammed at all, the mail system has a junkmail folder, and it is difficult (and expensive) for spammers to send you a PM.

8. Mature Player Base. Sure every game hase their jerks, morons, and griefers, but DDO has a very mature player base.  Most are willing to givethe armour off their backs if they could to help new people.  We also tend to be pretty good about policing ourselves.

9. material to play. FOr a serious gamer, may not be enough once you get the hang of the game.  FOrthe casual player, morethan enough material.  Even Serious gamers can find things to do, like collecting all the name items, Permadeathing, Role Playing, build creating, solo'ing, etc. There are 9 (?) raids in the game and alot of material for leveling.

10. FOr a different experiance REgardless if you play for a few days or years, many players, when they leave keep coming back, and for others it is a great second game to play.  It is NOT like any other game out there.

I'm on Argonessen right now, the game truly is amazing, I've been playing for 2 years so far. When she says the community is great, she means it.

Man I remember one time 12 of us in a PUG (pick up group) were in a bugged instance of VoN5 and we were waiting for a GM to come and fix the problem (a key didnt drop or something). In the meantime, which was 2 hours, we were all just sititng around talking, but mostly laughing, the whole time through and once the GM came, we continued to hang around and laugh.

Thought I am thinking of moving to Thelanis, I hear there is a strong RP / Event community over there. Not to mention whenever I am on the forums, most of the 'helpful' people are from Thelanis

I was thinking about your post in particular the area of combat. Although everything you say is correct it doesn't really give a feel for how clever the mechanism is, and how it really differs from standard MMO combat.

To me the key is not so much proximity checking when in melee or the need to position in combat, AoC for instance managed that. It is really in the area of projectiles that Turbine really excel (DDO not being their first MMO to have decent projectiles).

In a standard MMO when something is fired a LoS check is done and the animation starts, if by any chance circumstances change during the time the projectile takes to reach the target, the projectile ignores them. The result (especially for slow moving projectiles) is for the projectile to home in on the target passing through scenery, mobs and players to reach the target, in an incredibly unrealistic manner. DDO however creates a projectile object and fires it along a given path (unless like a MM it is actually a homing projectile) and reacts to anything in that path, or might move in to that path.

The result of this is you can actively dodge projectiles, block a projectile aimed at another person or place scenery between you and the projectile. You can also hit the wrong mob if it moves in the path (unless you have the precision feat).

Why is this so important apart from the realism. Well it empowers the player to move their characters to avoid damage, an element of twitch skill but constrained by the players movement stats (stat based twitch), which allows a whole new dimension to combat tactics. Where a standard MMO tends to penalise a character with high mobility but low defenses, because you get hit whatever you do, in DDO it is viable.

Wow.  I really never thought of it that way.  All I know is in all the other MMOs I have played so far, in DDO it's HIT HIT HITMISS HIT CRIT HIT.  In others was push button on bar.  1 2 3 4 5 push button on bar. 1 2 3 4 5.

Combat is pseudo-fps. You can just hold the mouse button down instead of entering a clicking frenzie, the strict interval between dice rolls becomes more apparent when youre jus holding it down, the click spamming creates the illusion that you initiate the rolls.

Hey Doctorwhofan, I just moved over to Thelanis this evening and was wondering if you could recommend any well respected guilds that would take me in. I just got over so I'm only level three and pretty broke, though I did just sell a gold coin for 10k plat.. (are they really that valuable? I never remember them being that high in price, and I've been here for two winter festivals)

Anyway, I just know you are very popular and respected among the Thelanis community so I'm sure you know the good eggs vs the bad. Well I hope to see you around the game, my name is Hiphop the 'M Sixteen' (I'm a halfling jumper/tumbler/repeater specialist)

Gold coins can give special prizes (seems one was an unbound +3 tome). Nothing like a bit of avarice to bump prices up.

Also keep your collectables any of the top tier collectables used in recipes will go for high prices.
