Yup, it's EQ2 for me now (not like I have a choice anyway).
Over the past few weeks I have been slightly leaning towards WoW as being the one I would stick with, but a few factors have swayed me the other way towards EQ2.
My brief history...long time EQ player as well as brief time in many other MMO's, just like most of you.
Let me also say, I will be trying WoW and it seems like a great game, but it's just my feeling that I will be playing and thoroughly enjoying EQ2 much more.
My reasons are as follows:
1) The obvious reason is that it seems that EQ2 will be released before WoW (which won't be released "for a while" /rolls eyes). While this may seem like an idiotic statement, I believe which ever is released first will greatly affect a large number of people on which they will be playing for the long haul.
2) The videos I have been seeing of EQ2 since the NDA was lifted are simply amazing. Many of the forum reviews (and I use the term loosely) I have read did nothing but trash the graphics. It wasn't until I saw them for myself that I realized I was reading such biased opinions. The only true way to evaluate a game it to see it with your own eyes and formulate your own opinion.
3) Conversely, the WoW graphics (as viewed from the videos) are really excellent as well. Much more colorful and more artistically designed then EQ2. However, from the videos I've seen, it just feels more like I'd be playing a Nintendo game than living an engrossing adventure.
4) I am a big fan of the dungeon crawl. Any game that gives me the feeling of a captivating, creepy adventure through a dungeon, and I'm yours. Being an EQ player, the indoor adventures of places like Chardok, Lower Guk, Greig's End, Old Sebilis, etc gave me such enjoyable times filled with tension and excitement. Again, from the videos, the dungeons in EQ2 seemed much more captivating. Much more like the feeling of actually being there, and not so much like I have to put another quarter in the slot to keep on playing.
5) The character tree in EQ2 seems slightly more intriguing than WoW's. You have talents in WoW which seem interesting, but the archetype structure in EQ2 seems like it will have more variety. Going back to forum reviews, people are saying despite this all of the EQ2 classes feel the same. Again, I would rather see this for myself. I'm sure it will be vastly different once I am into the game.
6) Bugs. Yes there are bugs apparently in EQ2, but search around and there seem to be just as many on WoW. I'm not going to go off on a wild tangent here, only I will say that we all understand there are bugs before and after the release of any MMO. The real question is, would you rather play a game and live with the few bugs it has now, or wait a few months and play a questionably more polished game later? This is the personal choice of the gamer, but I'll take the former over the later.
7) The fan base. This is just my perception and something that has been leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It seems that if you state something positive about EQ2 (or negative about WoW) and post your views anywhere in the vicinity of a WoW fanatic's eyes, you are completely trashed, considered sub-human scum, and are threatened with bodily harm. EQ2 fans, on the whole, seem to be much more relaxed and adult about their opinions. Yes, I know much of the WoW base will be coming from Bnet and so forth...and to be honest, I'm not sure I will enjoy playing with a majority of them.
8) Lastly, Blizzard seemed to have pulled something that many of their fan base loved to trash SOE for. Saying one thing and doing something else. This isn't a major factor for me, but it was more of the final straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. So yes, I will be trying WoW... as "soon" as I get a nice foothold in my EQ2 adventure.
Flame away.

I really wanted to post one link but couldn't find it again. I believe someone posted on this forum a link of 36 separate videos (some with dungeons) as well as one large one (131MB file) of Stormhold, entirely a dungeon crawl. I downloaded each one and have them, but couldn't find the link of the person to give them credit.
If anyone can find this link, please send it this way.
Edit - Bah! I found it on the EQ2 boards. Click on the link from the original poster http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=general&message.id=225946
Excellent and informative post Centhan. Good balanced perspective.

"Sony Customer Service is like Santa Clause, people say they've seen them but they don't really exist"
I was going to play both.
Untill I finaly got to play EQ2
After beta. I've come to this
IF I LIKED THE EQ SYTLE LEVEL grind. I could play EQ.
I thought their media hype that they would be offering a market to the casual user, that doesn't require group dependancy.
This was a lie. Solo was awful, boring, and lacking.
You mash 2 keys for 4 minutes, rest, then repeat. This isn't my idea of solo friendly.
Once I played WoW, It sealed the deal. The PvP is truely awsome. Gives the game a goal.
EQ2's goal is to just constantly level. I don't find this a rich experience. Lore is lacking, some people believe its great, but they've not yet really read any literature, specialy any WoW literature.
My 2 copper.
Flame on!
Yeah, after playing both EQ2 and WoW I've also come to the realization that EQ2 IS basically just a remake of EQ1 with prettier graphics, holds for fanboy bashing.
There is no real "meat" to the game besides a constant and rather boring grind that is very dependant on getting a group for most of the classes, a few can solo well but besides them don't bother unless you like agonizing frustration.
Also once again SOE was stupid and put in no PvP system to give people an extra something to do at high levels. And those "traits" they won't diverse a character much at all as a tank has one or two to choose from unless he wants to "gimp" his character same as a spell caster.
Now WoW isn't the end all to be all, but if you want an opinion from some who has played both games, WoW will probably hold your interest far longer then a grind in EQ2, simply because of the higher diversity of quests and the pvp at the end as well as high end content to hold player's interest.
"Sony Customer Service is like Santa Clause, people say they've seen them but they don't really exist"
let's not turn this into a WoW vs EQ thread.
Many thanks
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
a remake of eq1 just with prettyr graphics doesnt sound all to bad to me.......
the eq2 movies do look really great, with all the interaction you can have with the nps is just amazing. from what iv seen theyv done a great job pulling you in, and now that there woking on content all the probs everyones talking about should b solved

Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.
I played EQ for 2 years, EQ2 is not a remake (yes I have played the Beta).
If anything EQ2 is incredibly simple compared to EQ1.
If you like things like variation in spells and skills, faction, travel, diversity in equipment then EQ2 is not for you.
If you like a simplistic gaming experience then EQ2 is for you.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the zones in EQ2 look great but the models are quite frankly not upto scratch.
Don't know about WoW, havent played it yet.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Personally I liked WoW's graphics better. The world seemed more alive when i played WoW apposed to EQ2. In EQ2, it felt just like a bland computer generated world.
Just my oppinion though. Don't want to start a flame war or anything.
"The Crimes of the Servers are No Servers ONline and BLIZZARD KNOWS this! We play to beta test to WOW play the game that we Tested... FOR THEM!! What's wrong with the level grind? I enjoyed leveling my character. Aww but I guess you need some simple game that requires no skill to level up. How long does it take to max level in WoW? Couple days/weeks? I'd prefer a wide variety of levels in my community instead of having everyone max leveled. But I guess that is why I'm gonna be playing EQ2 while you play WoW. And what's different about WoW's combat? I believe you hit the "auto attack" button and mash a few timed keys. I'm sure that takes skill. Rest, Repeat. I guess if you want a truely "simple" game WoW is for you. I mean EASY leveling, no "grind" so you will be max leveled in no time, solo friendly, no death penalty. Aww you died? That's ok. No biggie. At least in EQ1 PVP you could stand on their dead body and smile at their corpse knowing that you made then lose EXP while you take their money. And on certain servers take an item. Whose to say EQ2 isn't going to have PVP? Just like in EQ1 the pvp servers will come out once PVE is perfect.
I honestly think rabid fanbois are hurting WoW much more then helping it.
People are just getting really fed up of them now.I honestly am thinking of cancelling my pre order of WoW because i see a large influx of morons incoming .
I'm sure you do love flaming fanboys. And if you think I'm a flaming fanboy... Umm sorry I'm not like that? Leveling different? LOL? Umm I believe the only way to lvl in most mmorpgs is by killing things / quest. So umm why don't YOU think before you open your mouth. Why don't you tell me what other ways you can gain levels besides the traditional killing and quests. You said there was a "LARGE VARIETY" of ways to level so umm name at least 5 please. And saying WoW was simple was just a reply to the post above which stated EQ2 was simple but I don't see you posting his message up. Hmm I'm guessing you're biased opinion of WoW makes you talk about EQ2 this way. You said level grind "is all about time." Yet you made an equivalent statement of WoW in a couple of weeks just like you could with EQ2 in a couple of weeks. Umm wouldn't that mean they both had equal lvl grind? ::gasp:: Use your head. Such a hypocrite telling me to have basis for my arguments when there is clearly none in yours. Talking about different lvling options yet he names NONE. "WoW's PvPs weren't afterthoughts but augmentations to the already good PvE" Just another one of your OPINIONS with no basis. While you think it might be good PVE maybe I and others don't like it. Maybe the THOUSANDS of EQ1 players LOVE the PVP which is why they continue to play it. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean we all won't. I'm sorry your opinion isn't the final say in everything and the deciding factor of which game is better. Because frankly both are EXCELLENT games. Sorry to the true gamers; wasn't trying to bash WoW just came across that way trying to defend EQ2.
"Blizzard games are like banks. People always try to hack and cheat their way in."
I wouldn't hold my breath for EQ2, then. The level of stupid has risen with the number of people they let in the beta. The /ooc chat this afternoon before I gave up on things was just as bad as anything I've seen on the pvp server in WoW.
A minute ago you were BASHING WoW Combat and how fast you level, Then you say you don't bash WoW.
Its far better to remain silent and appear ignorant then to open your mouth, and remove all doubt.

Do you ever read what I write or does you're fanatic behavior to make everyone believe WoW is better than EQ2 blind you? I said I wasn't TRYING to bash WoW. Though I did, I wasn't TRYING to. Just came across that way defending EQ2. If you have a negative comment on EQ2 that's fine. But you're obviously a WoW fan trying to degrade EQ2. Why?! WoW and EQ2 are like chocolate and vanilla. I just like the taste of EQ2. Plus your little flame on was drawing me in...
just out of personal opnion I don't really like the EQ2 gfx - only because the world looks a little flat. Guards seem to be cardboard cut outs on a blue background.
I've been playing beta and while the overall effect is very pretty and looks good some of the detail isn't very finished. Pixels are obvious on buildings and trees and the white line effect kinda puts you off. The backgrounds and scenery are good tho.
And 11 pages of Motioncapture emotes are nice
I play on a 2.6gig P4 with a Geforce FX5200 256mb and I play on High gfx.
I'm not saying that it isn't better for others its just my experience. I do like the amount of quests its great fun to have so much to do.
Well. I haven't played either beta, but from my reading it seems both games are dumbed down... I played EQ1 for 3 years, right from the gate. Yes, it is sad about the PvP, I mean EQ1 was supposed to implement this 'guild warfare' PvP bit. Having played SOE's first MMO, and from what I have read, I would go with EQ2. That is, until Vanguard: Saga of Heroes comes out. Now that is going to be a good game IMHO; it is being made by the lead designer of EQ1 (past tense: he has left SOE...).
Level grind? I like EQ1's better than DAoC, and proly better than the upcoming EQ2 and WoW, but Vanguard will go back to the real stuff (for real MMOers).
Hello All,
Well, as of this weekend I have played both WoW & EQ2 Betas!!! I was VERY excited to be able to get in on the FP Key give away on Friday.
Now...I want to say something first. I will be purchasing BOTH games. I'm a fan of Blizzard's from the very beginning of Diablo2 (played it with my step-sons) as well as Starcraft and WC2 &3...so for me WOW is really cool because I love the mythology already and IMO WOW really does make you feel like your IN a WC world. I enjoyed my time in the WOW Stress Test...enough so to know that I would like playing the actual game. My son's are particuarly excited for WOW and will most likely only play that game.
After playing the EQ2 beta for the past 3 days (when I could) I can "honestly" say that Sony has done a good job in creating what feels like a fun gamming experience. I'm only lvl 6 atm and just made my way to the Mainland (got my private room! woot) and it's been very fun exploring and learning as I go.
The graphics are very different for both games...and I LIKE that!!! I bumped up my video settings last night just to "see" what would happen and it looked very good. So smooth infact that it almost had the opposite effect of making the world look "softer" or a bit blurry...but I soon realized that I'm just not use to seeing SMOOTH skin and edges lol I'm use to the hard jagged pixels
Also...the voice over in EQ2 does a lot for me, I like it so far. And if you don't want to hear something a second time all you have to do is click continue...NOT a big issue like some have tried to make it.
The quests seem a bit more realistic in a way I can't really discribe (feeling) though they've all been the "Can you get this for me" type so far. Very similar to the WOW beginning quests.
Both games seem to be VERY well done, and a lot of work gone into their development. I'm excited to explore both and see where my wonder lust takes me!
I never played EQ before a few weeks ago...I signed up for the 30 day trial and played a week or so just to see what it was like. For me EQ2 is night and day different. And "for me" EQ2 will be a lot more fun...I'm a graphics geek I admit it!
But where I'll play WOW for fun and with my boys...I'm hoping that EQ2 will have more depth of content and emersion quality. And from what little I've seen it very well might live up to my expectations!
I wish you all the best of luck!
RA
ps - what's up with people complaining about lvl grind? Neither games is NOTHING compaired to say Lineage 2 in terms of grind lol
And your either going to be killing mobs or running errands...that's the nature of these games. And EQ2 has done a good job it seems developing for both Solo and groups. The mobs themselves tell you what they are as well as difficulty. There will ALWAYS be a grind...as well as those who want the extreams, like being able to MAX out a char in 2 weeks and those who want it to take 2 years! LOL I'm somewhere in the middle I guess. I don't want it to be FAST...but I want to see "some" progress
These I hate the grind posts just make me laugh though...if that's how you feel then I'm sorry, you most likely are playing the wrong genera of game. Cause with any mmog/rpg that's what your going to get.
