COMBAT: How does it work? [After seeing the video...]

This is my theory of how combat in SWTOR works from what I have seen so far...

Imagine if you learn 'moves/skills' which can be executed at the press of a button or even aligned for combinations. Now imagine, if each of those moves had variables such as 'Damage, %of hit VS 'this type of opposing skill' and 'that type of opposing skill'. So each skill basically has its strengths and weaknesses.

Now, players click their 'skills' to excecute, and the characters do so as soon as they can which makes combat appear to be 'real time' as if it were twitch-gaming but it isn't quite...

Meanwhile, as Player1 executes their skill and Player2 counters with their own, there are calculations done under the hood to see which of the two skills would come out on top. The calculation is done in an instant so you see the result of the clash right away, either hitting the enemy, dodging/blocking the enemy attack, countering, missing or getting hit.

Other factors can also affect the calculations such as level/weapon stats/type of armor worn and durability of armor etc...

Keep in mind I'm hoping that I am wrong and combat plays more like action games a la the Jedi Knight games... which had pretty great melee and ranged combat as well as movement which could be refined a little for SWTOR...

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Well, I doubt combat is gonna be like the Jedi Knight series. This is Bioware after all and KOTOR was a "under the hood" turn based game and so will this, I think.

As for your idea, that sounds a lot like what Matrix Online had. The video was pre-production meaning it was just something their animators whipped out on the fly to show off their engine and it may not have anything at all in common on how the game is going to play later on.

i'd like to see a combination of SWG Pre-CU (maybe without the combat queue) and WoWs system of attacks.  i think the typical MMO system of combat works great, i don't mind slight variations but i at least want a full hotbar.  nothing like the first two games, where its 3 buttons you have to scroll through to get to other abilities.

I think the combat system will be quite similar to the KOTOR series. Not like the Jedi Knight series which relies much more on twitch. MMORPGs generally tend to be 'click skill to execute' type of games anyway.

Lots of button mashing of 1-10 macroed where a child can do it with ease. Remember they are going for the biggest appeal to everyone in the market 9-17 yr olds, don't fool yourselves people.

It looked like the KOTOR combat systme to me but.... Lucas Arts would never have that combat system as it wasn't fast paced enough.
