I always hope my best MMO experiences will lay in the future and not in the past. Would be really bad if the best was already done : (
Wow, I thought I was the only optimist in this forum.
Really OP, to compare an unreleased game with something far in the past is just wrong, you have no way to know if DF will be ggod or not unless you are in the beta.
Personally I think that the next great PvP game will be Guildwars 2 but I basicly base that on knowledge of the first game together what I read about the upcomming one and I might be wrong. The good thing about the future is that it is unknown, and logically a better game will come around sooner or later than anything we seen so far, the future is infinate. DF will soon show us if it is worth all the fuss or not.
They just have showed what darkfall will be they never hyped or promise anything you eather like it and follow it or not they dont force you to follow darkfall.
They even said play before you pay, so whats problem here they give you a chance to play it and if you dont like it you dont buy it simple as that.
And Darkfall surtenly dont have to proof anything its a game developed for hardcore sandbox skill based free for all full loot pvp, you eather play it or not its simple as that.
Or you guys want ac-darktide be only game for ever with 1k players max and no new game been developed in fantasy genre?
I dont undertsand hostillity towards Darkfall?
You wanne be stuck in past and dont want new games been developed?
They havent showed anything except for what they want us to see, which is excactly what DnL and Mourning did. Unless an unbiased reviewer gets their hand on Darkfall and give it a fair run for its money then this game is all about what the devs are saying. They have said that you can pay before you play, until that option is actually put on the table then it is another addition to the stuff that the devs had said but havent delivered.
And I dont understand your reasoning that just because it is said to be hardcore sandbox skill based free for all full loot pvp then it doesnt have to prove anything? In these time of MMORPG inflation then every MMORPG has to prove something before people will buy it. This is even more so because of the constant misinformation and overhypeness that MMORPG devs keep pouring out. AoC anyone? Mourning anyone? DnL anyone? VSOH anyone?
Devs want to have our money? Then they need to prove and convince us that they are delivering the next gen of MMORPG, not just say that they are.
So far the Darkfall devs hasnt done any of that and just claim it is because they dont have a marketing budget. Yeah, releasing an MMORPG these days without a good marketing strategy? Yeah good luck with that.
The existance of so many critics of this game is no others fault than the devs. They could squash all these doubts with a good marketing strategy and more openness about a game to be released in a month. They choose not to do so and this is the result.
i think all that stems with horrible pr (though this WILL affect the game maintainance, customer service? LOL! bug fixes and updates? LOL!) and not from some scam, if they aren't trying to take our money before we get to play like as Dark and Light did (and even Mortal Online... I really hope that game isn't a scame too...).
Get this straight, they HAVE no marketing strategy, the HAVE no PR, they have no idea what their doing in these areas, all they are trying to do is make a good game (or so they say, we will see). And you get to try it before you play it, if you are so convinced that its nothing but garbage and won't even try it, thats cool dude now buzz off. If you're waiting for them to "act professional" and do some start acing like normal devs, you're going to be sorely dissapointed so just stop following DF. These guys are tards when it comes to PR (lol everyone think our game is the vaporz, k guys lets give our closest friend access to beta and let her "review" it.)
Oh and for those waiting for a "unbaised" reviewer to review the game, i wouldn't hold your breath, just play the game for yourself before you buy it. Remember IGN gave Warhammer a 9, a NINE OUT OF TEN.
So... because Darkfall MIGHT not be as good as AC-Darktide/UO pre-trammel, we should either give up on MMOs forever or go play WoW? Right. Even if Darkfall is only 50% as good as the old school sandbox MMOs, that's still 50% more fun I'd be having than playing any MMO currently on the market.
Exactly.
Somebody give us something new or at least properly emulate that which has been done well in the past.
We can't just go on pretending that WoW and its susequent clones are really great mmos. These present games are a lot of fun but they are not designed around challenge and competition like old mmos. They provide a platform for people of all ages and all tastes to come together in a giant global 3d chatroom and play little side games that any fetus or old fart could master.
They just have showed what darkfall will be they never hyped or promise anything you eather like it and follow it or not they dont force you to follow darkfall.

If DF is crap then its crap, so another game bites the dust, so what its only a game. If its great then ill pay it. so many people hate this game, its all very strange.
Untill Darkfall launch and people can compare all your logic on Darkfall vs other games can be used on every other game out there. Sorry. I fail to see your point.
I read the entire post looking for a point and came to the conclusion.... there isn't one.
Darktide pwns Darkfall. There is no way in hell that Darkfall will ever even come close to giving us what Darktide did back in the day on Asheron's Call. We "hope" Darkfall will deliver on even half of its promises. We "hope" that Darkfall won't be buggy and choppy and slow and laggy. We "hope" that Darkfall will be fun and won't fall flat on it's face. But most of us who ever played on the Darktide server back in the days know just how good it was, especially for its time. For it's time, the graphics were amazing. I remember when I first logged into AC back in 1999 and was simply awe struck at how the clouds actually floated in the sky and how bad EQ looked by comparison. But even then, it wasn't until I started experiencing all the newly imagined mobs that AC presented and its unique magic system with all the colored tapers and different components that I really started to fall for that game. The community, even on the relentless Darktide server was awesome. Most of the RPKs on Darktide were actually pretty cool. And most of the good anti-pks as well were cool as hell. The guild system, the unique random loot system. The seamless world, the hundreds of dungeons and quests that actually had deep lore were amazing for its time and still unmatched by any mmo out there. There is no way that Darkfall will ever beat AC Darktide at it's own game. I don't even think Darkfall will present many similarities to be honest. First Darkfall would have to prove a lot and actually "work". And then I think Darkfall, if it does actually work, will be more of an FPS with swords than it will be comparable to worlds like Asherons Call. And in the end, I have to be honest.. I hope Darkfall delivers. But even if it does deliver half what it promises and actually works when it launches, I don't think it will even dent everything that was so great about all we old timers experienced on Darktide back in AC's glory years. Maybe some of you who played Darktide back in the day have something to say. Maybe some of you think that should Darkfall be successful that it will resemble Darktide much more then I think it will. But in the end, Darktide DOES send Darkfall violently back to the lifestone with one bludgeoning hit for about 647 damage! Darktide launched not much earlier then I started hearing the hype about this unknown game called "Darkfall" just a year or later. Darktide was in it's peak years and fun as hell when I first heard of Darkfall the first time. And since then, Darkfall has been all hype, all undelivered promises all these years, while Darktide has actually delivered so many tens of thousands, perhaps millions of gamers hours of fun and action. Over 100 content additions have been added by Turbine in the same time that Darkfalls hype and promises have been talked about on forum boards. In the end, I think we can clearly see who the winner is from the year 2000 to the year 2009. And I wouldn't bet a single pyreal that Darkfall will be any better then Darktide is after all these years and even considering it's low devoted player population. In fact, I'd bet that Darktide will still be hosting players on 2010 and 2011 and on... And I'd bet that Darkfall will be just a joke in 2011, if it has even released by then that is. Yep, sorry DF fans. Darktide destroys Darkfall, period. I hope that Darkfall can launch and prove me wrong and blow Darktide even as I experienced it away. But then again, that sounds like fantasy world talk to me! Darktide is "real". {winks}

So you promote a 9 year old game that was a shadow compared to UO pre-Age of Shadows and says it will kill Darkfall, a game we havent experienced yet?
Untill Darkfall launch and people can compare all your logic on Darkfall vs other games can be used on every other game out there. Sorry. I fail to see your point.
I read the entire post looking for a point and came to the conclusion.... there isn't one.
This. I think hes just angry that nothing else has delivered the kind of experience that darktide did. He seems a mite bitter.
OP makes a great post and argument, even if comparing Asherons Call to an unfinished Darkfall is like putting Mike Tyson in a fight against an infant child.
Most of the ignorant responses since have been from players who likely never even set foot on the Darktide server. Granted the OP has also never played Darkfall as it still hasn't released yet, but it is easy for anyone sporting any common sense and logic skills that Darkfall will fail miserably. One example of this is all you need, and that is Aventurine says the server will let 10,000+ people play on a single server, yet they don't even need to stress test this server? They say that bots and a handful of players can test it properly before release? Really? A game of this size with so many promised features can be tested thoroughly with bots and a just a few players in such a short period of time? That's merely one example of about 100 I could list, but honestly I don't have the time. Anyhow, even if I gave 120 clear common sense examples showing how anyone with two brain cells working could see all the ways Darkfall will fail, all we'd get is fanboys responding with personal attack one liners and simple responses like "No, Tasos said {fill in the blank}"
But nobody can make a point that goes against the fanboys fantasies here or what Tasos, their mighty god has told them in their bible they follow religiously - their bible ofcourse being the mighty Darkfall forums (King Tasos version)

You act like you are not a troll. When you say stuff like "sure the game isnt out, but it will fail anyways duh" you make yourself look like an idiot and noone takes you seriously. Troll.

Anyone sporting common sense would know that a game like this would need an open beta. I mean if they don't have one THEN your arguments hold weight, but until then:
and also, if you don't believe the words, videos, and screenshots of the devs because "they are from the devs" will you believe them when they say the game is out or will you wait for gamespot to be like "Ok this game called Darkfall is out, and this game sucks because it doesn't follow anything set by the great WoW. 1/10"

ahhh...the one in green must be a new recruit to the army of DF fanbois. Well I am for one sorry that you believe anything the "devs" say is to be fact. I have heard the same crap for 8 years. I mean don't get me wrong I DO hate the game with a passion and cant wait for it to fail, but I am happy that they actually became adults and finally gave a release date. I mean now I know when to buy some popcorn, sit back and watch the fireworks fly

Another bitter person who is sad because his mmo failed horribly..... here is a handkerchief
For many people who are new to mmo's, Darkfall could be the "AC" experience. In your case, you seemfamiliar with the genre and perhaps even jaded.
I look at Darkfall as the fork in the road. Where publishers don't have to produce braindead childish meatloaf games. Games can be challenging, and fun, and stimulating.
Interesting, I thought my 42 years would almost make me some sort of oldtimer in MMOs, but it's still stunning to see how people could so blatantly live in the past to feel the need to compare everything with their precious
Honestly, a discussion like this is sad beyond belief. I can't say if everything Aventurine is coming up with is true, - in fact I'm sure the game WON'T be everything announced over the years at release or partially will never be. Hanging on the lips of some developer and religiously believing in everything they announce is naive.
However, it's always those that can't come up with anything better than exactly the same on the other end of the scale, that reside on arguing against that behavior.
To all those a new game effectively CAN'T be good anyway, as long as it isn't some sort of tweaked clone of what they decided as being the crown of MMOs. This, by thew way, goes for both sides of fanatics.
What's so hard about accepting a new and upcoming game as what it is, a new game, following it's own visions and concepts, and just try it out once it's there? Didn't we already have our share of unimaginative clones when it comes to the genre?
I prefer the risk of something new, even if it might fail, any day, especially when seeing it's not MY risk. I'm a freakin' customer. If I like the product, I'll eventually spend my money on it. I don't decide on the product design in development as well as I don't rate a product on sparse information or wild speculations of self proclaimed gaming experts ahead of it's release.
For my taste, game developers by now listen far to much to their customers already. To me a good game is as much a product as it is a piece of art. We'd have far less great pieces of art in history, if there wouldn't have been enough artists who dared to stay true to their own taste and vision instead of listening to others telling them what to do.
It's their vision, their ideas, their craftsmanship and their final product. Don't be cheap and try to take this away from them. If you want to take charge, go all the way and get into business yourself.
I never post to gaming forums, either pro or con, for the simple reason that each players opinion of a game is just that... their opinion, and thereby beyond dispute. I see little value in trying to convince other players to agree with "my" opinion, because frankly i really dont care if they agree with me or not... it wont influence whether i enjoy a game or not.
Why i am posting this rare response is merely to acknowledge AnsgarIsen's post in this thread... it is, without a doubt, the most intelligent response i have ever seen in these forums - fair, insightful, and non-confrontational. Pity that more could not learn from his example.... well done Ans!!
I'm going back to the game im playing now... i'd rather play a game that i enjoy than listen to other people argue about games they aren't playing ....
There is no way that Darkfall will ever run 10 years like Asherons Call has. It will be lucky to still be around ten MONTHS after its launch. Maybe even 10 days. 10 days is about the length of time that Mourning lasted. Sounds about where Darkfall will fall too. Of course, first - it has to actually launch. And announced date or not, I wouldn't bet too much on Darkfall even launching at all in 2009.
What your digital download that you paid 50 euros for doesn't work? Did you read the EULA? Yes we have determined you can't have an online experience yet... stay tuned..
Op your stuck in the past, and its very sad to constantly see how to try hold on to game thats been released 9years ago. That your a fan of ac-darktide i can undertsand and that you have amazing memorys also, but why you try keep telling others that Darkfall will never beat ac-darktide what you wanne proof here, its childish, e-peen attitude bah. Have darkfall some how hurt your feelings? So you rather have ac-darktide been only free for all pvp server continuing and new games must not see the light? Darkfall is comming if you like it or not, pls stay at your beloved game if you think it still hold your attention we dont need you. You become more and more a troll of some old game and affraid your toy been destroyed by new kid on the block. Ac is old, its good new fresh games are developed if you dont undertsand this thats fine its your loss, but comming to forums of games that are in same catagory as yours and try convince us your baby is better then ours is pathetic. Have fun with your ac let us have fun with Darkfall i dont go over to ac forums to tell you ac fans you game sucks so dont come here that darkfall wont beat yours that childish behavior. You have just made your self a ac-darktide fool your topic fail comepletely, now go back to your beloved game, let us have ours.
sort of reminds me of the seemingly non-stop DF-fanboi spam over all the other forums.
welcome to my world of "wtf was that about".
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

If DF is crap then its crap, so another game bites the dust, so what its only a game. If its great then ill pay it. so many people hate this game, its all very strange.
I read the entire post looking for a point and came to the conclusion.... there isn't one.
So you promote a 9 year old game that was a shadow compared to UO pre-Age of Shadows and says it will kill Darkfall, a game we havent experienced yet?

Troll.

ahhh...the one in green must be a new recruit to the army of DF fanbois.

I never said that I believe everything that the devs said. I'm just saying if you follow this game, you can't just assume that everything the devs say are lies. Sure they've made some (really) misleading statements but if you believe nothing they say then in your head, there would be no game, why are you following a theoretical game? I mean don't get me wrong I DO hate the game with a passion and cant wait for it to fail, but I am happy that they actually became adults and finally gave a release date. Why do you hate the game? You've never played it yet. I'm interested in the game that, if successful, would be the only hardcore mmo on the market (and would be my dream mmo). I don't know if it will be sucessful or be a disaster; you, however, seem to know everything before hand, please grace us some of your wisdom O' great one.

600 words on how a game (that sucked compared to UO) will without a doubt be better than a game that yet to be released, I congratulate you sir

Self-confessed DF fanboy. Finally a real ****ing MMO.
Yes we have determined you can't have an online experience yet... stay tuned..
sort of reminds me of the seemingly non-stop DF-fanboi spam over all the other forums.
welcome to my world of "wtf was that about".
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
