I don't know if you anyone has come across this yet. I seen it posted on the beta forums and sparked a bit of interest with me.

This part caught my attention the most : But Phil O'Neil, president, North America, of "Warcraft" publisher Vivendi Universal Games, said the game will actually launch a week after the company's other hot holiday title, "Half-Life 2," which debuts Nov. 16.
Things that make you go Hrmmmm!
Edit : I just wanted to add that I am not saying that this is true, I am not speculating on when OB or release will be. I have true faith in Blizzard that they will have it finalized when THEY feel it is ready. Just thought it was interesting how they (Detroit Free Press) got this quote from Phil.
Comments
"World of Warcraft," the online world game from the makers of the incredibly popular "Warcraft" strategy game series, is scheduled to launch the week of Nov. 22, the Free Press has learned.
Most stores have predicted Nov. 15 would be the launch date for "World of Warcraft," guessing that Sony Online Entertainment's behemoth "Everquest 2" would come out on or near the same day. But Phil O'Neil, president, North America, of "Warcraft" publisher Vivendi Universal Games, said the game will actually launch a week after the company's other hot holiday title, "Half-Life 2," which debuts Nov. 16.
Oh my! If that Newspaper is even remotley true then that means it wont come out until November 22nd. Heck they even said they talked to the Main guy in charge over WoW!!
Nice find!

Agreed! Great research there...
Glad this interested you guys as well! Although, I can't take all the credit for finding it. I did find the link originally here : http://12.129.232.213/thread.aspx?fn=wow-general&t=475943&p=1&#post475943
There are mixxed feelings in the beta community, whether it is true or not, it is still interesting none the less.
There's a few people in denial in that thread. One person even compared it to the likeness of the Rather/Bush War record scandel.
My opinion is this. Why would a newspaper lie about this? Because you either quoted the man or you didn't.
The worse thing a newspaper can ever do (even more so than the Rathergate contraversy) is to blatently lie and misquote someone.
It's worse to misquote or make up words that someone said rather than delivering infactual 3rd party information. Because it's libel.
My opinion is this: If the president of the Publishing company that is over Blizzard declares a release date than that is more official than a Developer. Simply because the President writes the Developers' paychecks.
But you never know in this crazy world

I once met a Paladin, a man of pure virtue, a protector, a man who made me feel safe and secure when he was near me...... so I killed him.

What was stated in that newspaper does make some sense though. Why would you have two long awaited titles launch at the same time. With a one week split like that it still puts both tiltles on the shevles for the big Christmas buying time frame. Also with no major probs between now and then open beta should kick off at or before the EQII launch.

Hmm
I dont think it's a rumour though.. a newspaper just cannot make words up and them say someone said it. In journalism thats the worse offense you can make...worse than plaigerism.
I mean if Phil O'Neil said it..then he said it. He can always change his mind and make it sooner but I believe the newspaper quoted him and that what it says.
The only explanation I can think of if it is fake is if some hackers hacked the newspaper site to do that; but I find that very unlikely

They stagger them, so that they can keep up with the production need. BOTH of them are going to sell out.. So they want to get one done a little bit befor the other.
Well, Yay. I am glad that solid news has finally come out (even if it is fake). everything really does make sense and the whole economic picture is comming together.
Yay for WoW!!!
They said they would try to launch before the end of the year.
They know thier money is in launching before Xmas, if they pass that date they pass a lot of revenue.
Realistically since EQ2 is Nov 8th, I wouldnt be surprised by the 15th being the tentitive date, within a week of eq2 and before the holiday, otherwise EQ2 gets too big of a headstart.

And regardless what the publisher says, he has very little say in the actual coding and production of the game itself. He could have said it, and not have the best idea of how far it really is away and merely giving an educated guess.

Well people It looks like the next push is going to be HUGE!!. They are implementing raids, battlegrounds, the honor system, and INFERNALS!!!

Yay.
We appreciate everyone's interest in determining when World of Warcraft will ship, but while we are rapidly approaching the open beta period and we are confident that we will meet our goal of shipping the game before the end of this year, nailing down an exact ship date is a little more complicated due to a number of factors. As soon as we have a specific date to announce, we will be excited to share the news with everyone. Please don't consider any announced release dates official until such an announcement comes from Blizzard. This is true for all announcements related to Blizzard games.

Official response to the news report over at Blizzard. So its back to a rumor again, but a good one!
Yes it is quite a good one (rumor??). I bet you all have checked out blizzard.com and have seen the new job postings. Yup those are all needed positions when WoW goes live! The storm is coming!!!
your half right. It's the other way around though: The publisher is the one pulling the DEVs ropes. When it comes to the release the publishers can force it out, despite of the developer's approval. Same goes for movies. If you don't have a producer then you're not going to get a movie and if that producer says "stop filiming by next week" then you need to stop filming next week.
The second half of your post is 100% correct. Sadly, publishers simply have no idea or they just don't care about the development of a game and usually their educated guesses aren't that great.
Finally, I did read that statement by Blizzard, however, I still don't think it's a rumour. There's no such thing as a rumour when you quote the president of a publishing company over wow. Either the President has no idea what he's talking about (unlikely..but could very well be the case) or the newspaper is flat out lying (unlikely...but could very well be the case)

I actually heard it would release the 23rd a few days ago, so this almost verifies it for me. :P

I am curious where you heard that from? Not saying you are not right, I just want to know
I find it funny how there has been so many leaks throughout the last month or so on release dates. They can't control everyone that they are in the works with. Just like the original post here that I started, if you click that link now, it is gone (the Beta site one). I live here in the Detroit area, this newspaper, Detroit Freepress, is our major newspaper. Someone was saying in another thread on the beta forums (thread has been deleted by now) that this was not a good source, for they have never heard of it. Well, I read it alsmot everyday (I try to stay in touch with the world!) so I can assure those who think this paper is a hoax, it is very much real.
I also agree here with En1Gma, what this allegid Phil says it what they go by. He is the 'producer' of their game, if he was to say it needs to be released tommorow, they have to listen to him. He has the final say.
Also, it would be wise for them to release it one week after Half-Life. They could get away with releasing it at the same time on the 16th, but than it would take away from the sales of the other if people were interested in both. It gives people the extra week to get another paycheck (for those that do live week by week) inorder to pick up WoW. And I am sure that they want it out before Thanksgiving, most people begin their Christmas shopping the day after (the biggest shopping day of the year!). Alot of people do not want to re-enter the shopping malls during December when it is most busy.
The days are coming closer, I can sense it with all the things they have been doing as of late. Again, as someone else pointed out, the next patch will be HUGE! And again, this is all just pure speculation. But, if you were in their shoes, would you not want to make it happen for Thanksgiving when you would make the most profit? I know I would.
and the 22nd is only 4 days before the busiest shopping day in the year "Black Friday." From a marketing point of view its perfect. Four days is enough time to ponder the game and then pick it up as a gift or what not on Friday.
