Considering that this is THE most controversial change to SWG since the NGE itself it's definitely on topic and should be allowed to be discussed, especially here on the "veterans refuge".
The TCG is highly controversial, and because it's "pay for play" and a form of RMT, it is certainly arguable that SOE is running a 50 state illegal unlicensed lottery in violation of US online gambling laws.

I got a temporary ban the other day for talking about the TCG also and the legal implications that could be involved that if this blows wide open into the mainstream media. The desperation of the fanbois now is just too delicious to observe here now...

If Stradden wants to uphold his delcarations concerning this site's honesty, he should audit his volunteer mod staff for SOE employees.

I have not seen Micky D's having any  trouble.

There is a no purchase necessary option to enter.

That is a requirement of all such games.  You can't REQUIRE pay to play or else it's illegal gambling and/or an illegal lottery.  Also odds of winning has to be published.

    TCG doesn't do this.

I dunno if this was answered and no I'm not one of those "this is gambling" people.

If you read those they say "no purchase necesary" (no I can't spell) and give you an address to write to if you would like a free game piece...

You are not required to buy anything.

In fact basicly they are giving you a piece for free with your normal purchase...

    lol I tried /shrug

I mean if SOE has a free in game card for me if I write to a certain address.. I would use my bulk mailer to send in my requests.  (that was supposed to be funny).

Well, other have said the following but I will add one additional factor that is overlooked...

    1) They establish the value of the entry as free with "No purchase nessicary" (sp) with a way to aquire a chance to win by simply requesting it. It happens to come with the food. the TCG does not have that feature (which, from what I understand, is how they get around the gambling/lottery issue because they establish the value of the game piece by having them available for free. The TCG does not, see point #2)

2)They do not charge a monthly subscription fee to play the game ($15 in the TCG's case) and then charge you $3 more for additional chances to win beyond the 5 that come with the $15 subscription fee.

    /sarcasm on

So, here in Colorado, it's become illegal to smoke within gambling establishments. If this does head down the illegal gambling road (worse case senerio for satire sake here) does that mean if you play the game, it becomes illegal to smoke in your own home? Just a thought I hope people with a sense of humor can enjoy!

    Have a good night!

Since they give you for free the starter kit of cards and 5 free booster packs a month it costs no one anything unless they elect to purchase cards.

Getting 5 free packs of cards each month is better than writing into Micky' D's for a free game token.

And another fact is that once a loot item is claimed it can no longer be traded, thus it has zero value other than to the toon who claimed it.

Correct me if  I'm wrong , but when I re-installed for the vet trial and tried the trade card game , I was only able to complete 2 decks of 50 , (Imperial/Rebel) . But when I tried to complete a deck for Sith/Jedi I could only come up with 15 cards for Sith/Jedi. Obviously  the cards for Sith/Jedi are better , are people really completing a deck of 50 Sith /Jedi with the 5 free boosters per month?

It still requires a subscription.    You couldn't open a club with a member ship fee and then hold 1 free lottery each month, for example.

Not that I am speaking for the legal issues of the card game.  It is most certainly aimed to get subscribers to gamble, but I don't know if it actually breaks any laws.

That would be for the IRS to determine.   By that I mean if they feel they are owed monies they will find some way or someone to prove it illegal.
