Tried the trial

Downloaded the trial this weekend, created a character, logged in to the starting island...straight in to a kiddie flamefest.  People flaming each other, telling each other to STFU and quit asking dumb questions, on and on.

The game itself seemed okay, but first impressions of community are important to me:  and Vanguard failed.  Maybe it was just the starter island and the rest of the game is fine, but the damage was done.

I think I was on Seradon this Saturday.  There were lots of people on the island...in fact, WAY more than I expected.

you know why that is? the free trials.

I saw the same thing every game with a free trial. Most of the people go into free trials do not even want to play the game, they sit in chat and chat all day long.

I have the best idea ever for a game lol.If more than 5 people block a lunatic in the chat room, they auto get banned for one day.Repeat offenses are of course much longer.I mean just blocking out the chat channel or that person does nothing to stop sir jack ass.

Vanguard is more than fine ,it is actually a very good product, beats the doors off most every game in a lot of aspects.Do i play it now? nope,i am not currently playing any big time mmo,i am playing around in some small time ones.

What i hate just as much is the chicken shits who love the game and won't do anything about it.If they like there game so much ,why do they sit there idle and let some free trials kiddies ruin there game? Then you have to laugh because the quiet pacifists try to blurt out a "WTS Flame Degen" in amongst 50 streaming lines of gibberish from the free trial lamers.

You can pretty much bet ,those kids came from WOW,that was the first time i had ever seen such rubbish from a community and i have been around a lot of games.Yes i was in WOW the first day it launched,it is nothing like that now,for the simple reason, the low end zones are pretty much dead. That is where you see it in the free trial zones.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Trial Island is always packed, with a lot of new folks.  I've started some alts there, and for the most part it's a good community.  But since it is a free trial, I'm sure it can attract some idiots too.  The rest of the game is certainly not like that.  I do know for a fact, that a a number of people on Seradon act as volunteer guides to help answer noob questions etc.  And a number of guilds sponsor newbie events for those that elect to play and leave Isle of Dawn and enter Telon.

Sorry it was a bad experience.  The Isle of Dawn community is definitely not a reflection of the larger community as a whole.

You definately need to see the community outside of the starter island. Seradon has a wonderful community. Not sayin that there isn't a few asshats around but by in large the best community i've seen since Saga of Ryzom's early days.

They shouldn't give trial people the opportunity to chat. in Lotro people with the trial can't use auction houses and can't send a tell to people. But I think they shouldn't be able to use the whole chat...

I am probably a touch too critical and skeptical about MMORPGs but I will tell you Vanguard has one of the best communities I've ever seen. I canceled after a month in 07 and was not impressed. This was due to bugs, technical shortcomings, and other things that just annoyed the hell out of me. I just resubbed and am having a great time outside of the trial area.

The trial zone is simply that -- a starter area to acclimate you to the ins and outs of the game. It is really not much of a reflection on the greater game other than some of the basic mechanics you get to explore.  Also, it is basically a free to play area, so you get all that comes with that . Particularly, you can have any jack ass who is just logging in to go nuts on people from other, less friendly games.

Vanguard = most mature community out of any MMO I've played. You will always have "l2p" and "stfu n00b" crap in video games, but they are definitely not the norm in the broader 'real' game.

The game has come a long way, and I definitely think it deserves a second look if you tried it in the past. I've played just about every MMO on the market and this one has a lot of things I really enjoy. I don't know that I'll end up playing for a year, but I already paid for another month and plan on exploring some more. I hope this helps for those of you who are on the fence or who have only done the trial.

Every once in a while, mostly when I have a renewed interest in Vanguard, I pop on over to these forums. I've heard the same old thing for the past year now: "The community is too small," and "The community is growing." So how, after a year of growing, is the community still small? Someone is stretching the truth here; either the VG community a year ago or the community now, because I came back during the vet free trial almost a year ago and was hearing the whole "growing" song a dance then too and the community was really small then (Seradon).

Now I have nothing to gain from arguing this, because I'd love to hear something believable on these forums to convince me to resubscribe, but I am very weary of exaggerated claims now.

Last reliable numbers I read shown VG with about 950 users logged in at one time during peak hours on Seradon not too long ago. That's not much more than DAOC has per cluster and it has on average 2k people logged into the game on all servers, with about 600 people on average per cluster. VG has a much larger world than DAoC, so 950 is hardly anyone online at all, when 600 is pretty barren on DAoC.

I'd love to see some official numbers, because VG IS a good game, but required a lot of effort to get into, and I don't want to waste that kind of effort on a game that will never see full servers. VG is good, but not that good.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

    Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It sounds like you just happened to log on at the worst possible moment. I, too, am new to Vanguard, and have had a completely different experience.

I have started 3 different toons on IOD (2 on Xeth about 2 weeks ago and 1 on Seradon this past weekend) and have found the community to be extremely mature and helpful for the most part. Although I've gotten one or two less-than-responsive remarks to questions I've asked, that is by far the exception. Even then, nobody has been outright rude or obnoxious. I haven't seen those kind of comments on region chat either.

There seem to be a lot of long-term VG players doing alts on IOD, and I have found them to be really helpful and willing to share info. Most seem to realize that the influx of "new blood" the Island is bringing is important for the long-term health of the game.

I am particularly grateful for the experienced group that allowed me to join them for my intial foray into the Temple of Ancestors. Without their patient guidance, I would have been hopelessly lost (and dead).

get off the starter island and it will be better, way better.  Basically you joined up when a bunch of kids joined up and started to do stupid things on the starter isle, it happens in all games but they tend to either leave quickly or move on.  Once you leave the island the game really does open up and becomes fun to explore (i have yet to hear of anyone who can say that they have been everywhere) and the community gets a lot more mature

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I think it is the free trial.  The main game has never been like that.  But when you are playing the free trial you get all sorts of people.  Some might be there just to cause havok....

Vanguard has its share of flame in channels when I was playing just like every game does.  Though you get more of a small town feeling when a game boils down to really small numbers.

It is hard to be an asshat in a small community and be able to fade back into the crowd.  Of the flip side small communities can be hive minded towards anyone who doesn't tow the line.

As AoC was released a lot of people left, 2 months later they came back. Same with other releases. So its a constant up and down. Depending on when you subscripe the community is either growing/shrinking or is stable. There are no official numbers.

Overall the playerbase of VG is small. If youre looking for a game where you basically run into crowds around each corner, VG isnt the game for you. If you like being more on your own, a casual player who take the time to do things outside of grinding levels, this game is good.

You played the game already a year ago and VG today isnt much different. Less bugs, more content, changed classes, the usual thing, nothing revolutionary. You deceide for yourself if you like the game and think its worth subbing for a month, or you put your money on other games you think you get more out of it.

And the people playing VG are very friendly and helpful, a very mature crowd.
