What SOE should do is make everquest 1 free to play

And use item shop and expansions for EQ1 for cash. Why not?  WE all know EQ1 isnt doing that great any more.

Smedley already said they won't make it F2P.

    Interview on 10TonHammer:

Is this an experiment in your current games? Are there plans to go fully Free-to-Play?

"This isn't an experiment and we aren't going free to play."

I personally don't care about a F2P game. You spend (waste) far more of your resources in time on a MMORPG than the 10 or 15 bucks you spend a month. It's really a pittance when you think about it. I'm not sure why some people care about the subscription price. What's the price of going out to the movies? And that only lasts a couple of hours. I don't really blame him for not making EQ F2P. It's an old game. 95% of people who are going to play it, are going to play it anyway. Why should SOE they give up the profit? It gets them nothing. The servers cost money to run too.

Just because Smedley said it doesn't mean sh**.  However, SOE is way too money hungry to ever let EQ1 become F2P

MMO are not a cheap form of entertainment by any means, neither is going to the movies. They are luxury forms of entertainment.

Cheap entertainment is going to the park or playing outside or going for a drink.

If MMO were cheap entertainment players would just play many at once and feel no problem to shell out the cash each month.

The cost of the game, the monthly subscription, the subscription for player access (optional), keeping your PC updated with hard/software, electricity bill, internet bill, F2P items you might feel enticed to buy etc....

Saying MMO are a cheap form of entertainment is a misconception because there are many free and cheaper ways to entertain yourself. (no pun intended)

Just because you can't afford the damn game doesnt mean they should allow a rush of 12 year olds into it. GO make money

They are money hungry bastards ('scuse the language). They introduced a CASH SHOP IN A PTP MMORPG. You really think they'd make ANYTHING FREE?

MMOs are dirt cheap. if you decide to lump in everything that you need to own and run a computer you might (barely) have a point. But most people use their computer for more than a single game. if you are so poor that the price of the game and subscription is a lot, that's too bad. You probably don't even own a computer then. However, for most American's fifteen bucks a month + the cost of the game is nothing. You can't just look at the cost in isolation either. Look at it in terms of hours spent. Even chugging your drink is going to cost you a few bucks and that won't last you even close to the time your 15 bucks will get you on an MMO. Even going to the park is more expensive. Who pays for the park? You do though your taxes. And it doesn't matter if you even use the park. You are forced to pay. MMOs are cheap ...... CHEAP! The costliest thing about an MMO is your time spent. Think if you worked those hours.

Is SOE making money? I think that is the only yardstick he is evaluated on. He is a businessman.

They may be profitable but they certainly don't have a wildly successful MMO like WoW. And SOE is a company that at one time dominated the market (granted when it was much smaller). My feeling is that they are throwing money at the problem by supporting many games because they have money to throw. Maybe one day something will stick and they will have a huge success. But currently they are pitiful compared to Blizzard.

Sony is actually coming out with some free games, though.  Free Realms, at least will be free (with cash shop and optional subscription, sounds like).

So why not some of their older games?

R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there

EQ and EQ2 aren't attracting new players. The players who didn't want to use Station Cash or are against said concept have for the most part left (me too).

So who is left in those games? For the most part very addicted players who don't mind spending a few hundred dollar each month on items.

I remember, there was one person who spent 1000$ on items and was proud to show off his mounts. I was disgusted to be honest.

They're not gonna change the model of EQ/EQ2 when the players left have no problem paying for the game, and the franchise isn't attracting new players anyway. SoE thinks in terms of cash only.

Some EQ developers were just transferred to the Free Realms team. If you're wondering where all the money is going, it's to Free Realms. I hope it crashes and burns.

I would play EQ1 if they made it free. It was the first mmo I ever played but never played more than a month.   I don't mind cash shops as long as the items people buy don't give people an advantage with gear and such.  If all it is is mounts, appearence armor and  +exp potions im cool with that.   I say let people spend more money if they want to but spending more money shouldn't = stronger than people that don't spend the extra money.
