Meaningful Solo PvE End-Game?

sc2071sc2071 Member Posts: 5

Greetings,

I'm looking for an MMO with a meaningful PvE end game.  I've played WoW for years, but I haven't upgraded to Wrath, and I'm hoping not to.  I liked the experience of leveling from 1-70, well at least for the first toon, but after hitting 70 progression became a brick wall.  Battlegrounds can be fun, but Arena just isn't for me.  It was pretty much raid or quit, and all content patches seemed largely focused on raiding.

I'm currently playing Warhammer Online, but there's just something off about the game.  And while PvP can be fun, I find that I'm lacking any sense of empowerment.  I'm wondering if PvP, just isn't my thing.

I'm not opposed to grouping, or doing raids every once in a while.  But, my play time is limited with a family.  So, I tend to solo most of the time.

I'm considering LOTRO, The Chronicles of Spellborn, and even just coming to the sad conclussion that WoW is the closest thing to suit my tastes and getting Wrath.  Don't know what else is out there, or soon to release that would be worth looking into.

I'm currently playing Left 4 Dead a bit with friends.  Wish there was something like that, but with levels and gear!  Closest thing I've played to that was Hellgate: London.  Which I actually thought was pretty good.  Too bad they canned it before they could fix it and make it great.

Thanks!

    lol welcome to mmo dude.

why do you even play mmo?

for having someone help you with a quest when you cant do it alone (that actually doesnt happen extremely often in wow questing) ?

selling your items for more gold than to vendors?

what else really? chating with friends? there is skype/msn/icq etc for that.

give me atleast one good reason why dont you play singleplayer rpg... which are actually more rich in every damn rpgish way.

    omg... another one.

EDIT:  Let's simply say I know the difference between a single-player RPG and an MMORPG.  I even can find my way to the retail boxes of Oblivion or Fallout 3 believe it or not.

Next time, please don't offer up a definition of what an MMO is.  Either contribute with a suggestion or move on to the next post.

I would avoid Lord of the Rings Online.  While it does have some solo content, the majority of it is very group based, including the main story line.  You won't be very rewarded for soloing.  I never made it to end game, it reminded me too much of EQ with it's forced grouping attitude.  Don't let other posters in here fool you.  You will not get the same quality content solo that you do in groups or raids in any MMO out there, not a single one, except for maybe the upcoming Star Wars the Old Republic game.

World of Warcraft really is the closest thing to solo friendly on the market, but even they treat soloers like second class citizens.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

The Chronicles of Spellborn was a bust. I didn't make it very high, but from what I heard it gets rather hard to solo.

Ultima Online has lots of things other to do then pvp and kill. lots of craft type skills and lots things to craft. u can build your own house and put anything u get into it and lock it down. u probly will want to go to the site read about it i,ts got so much to it. and its skill based not grind based.

    Try Runes of Magic.

It features a lot of elements of WoW through it's interface, yet it promises some meaningful PvP with a reputation system, guild vs guild, and server vs server PvP.  It also has dual classing as well.

Best f2p MMORPG atm in my opinion ^_^

So if you want end game solo content in an MMO what do you actually hope to accomplish? Do you want to have the best gear and be on par with people who raid? Do you just want dungeons you can solo by yourself? What exactly do you mean by "meaningful"?

Unfortunately no matter what your answer is you are going to have to realize that the majority, if not all, PvE MMOs only offer raiding as ongoing end game content. MMOs today are directed to more casual players which in turn makes them almost entirely solo, but once you reach end game that's where the MMO part really comes out. In my opinion end game raiding in MMOs is the only thing that seperates them from single player games.
