Another major security flaw has been found in all versions of Internet Explorer and it isn't fixed y

Trend Micro is recommending using browsers other than Internet Explorer for now.

"What we've seen from the exploit so far is it stealing game passwords, but it's inevitable that it will be adapted by criminals," he said. "It's just a question of modifying the payload the trojan installs."

"The message needs to get out that this malicious code can be planted on any web site, so simple careful browsing isn't enough."

Well, I'm glad that I've always felt IE was garbage and never bothered with it.

Yeah and they are "thining" about making a emergency patch instead of making people wait a whole month to get a fix that should have been found and fixd awhile ago.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Who really cares though? The people still using Internet Explorer are computer illiterate anyway.

Even before this hole was found, there wasn't one single security expert who'd recommended Internet Explorer as a half decent browser.

    Looks like another IE vulnerability,

    Think though of the possibility.

Perhaps the reason Fox is free of the hacks

Is similar to why Mac is free from attacks

Because of its low market visibility.

I've got Avant, but I never use it except for when I check how my sites look on each browser.

Avant is an IE shell / Trident shell though, so it is probably compromised by the current flaw just the same as IE.

How can Firefox be less than IE?

    It's more like this:
Firefox > everything else > IE

Safari does a good job rendering, but Firefox is more customizable and easier to use, in my own opinion. (But the differences between Firefox and Safari are nothing compared to how much better than IE they are)

    Ok,

But it's still way better than Internet Explorer.

no clue why everyone dislikes IE, apart from this security flaw. It's simple and i dont notice much of a difference, well actually for the past 2 weeks i have been having a problem with Internet pages locking up on me, but besides that i have never had a problem with IE. Although with this news, i will be useing FF until IE 8

Used IE for years and never had a problem with it..... I keep hearing about these security issues and nothing has affected me so I reckon people are overracting as usual.

So how do you know if you have this bug?

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

Security Flaw was patched today.  I don't think any other browser has the resources at thier disposal to be the most used browser.  Think of all the hacks and exploits that Microsoft has to deal with compared to Chrome or FireFox.  Since microsoft is so huge in employees and talent, these are usually dealt with monthly, or more urgently if there is a crisis.

Web developers hate IE. It does not support W3C standards, it's buggy, and always seems render everything wrong. Even if you like IE, with each new version they break compatibility with their older version, so you need to go back and change your source code years latter. IE doesn't support newer standards right, and since 4 out of 5 people use IE it's pointless to write anything that IE doesn't support, IE is holding back the development of the internet.

This is how IE compares to the other main browsers:
    http://www.webdevout.net/browser-support-summary

Once IE has less people, say 2 out of 5, web developers will stop wasting time trying to make IE display their sites right, it won't be worth it anymore. People will need to migrate or be left behind. (Or M$ might finally give us a half decent browser)

The bug is in Internet Explorer, a hacker could take advantage of it easily, if they know what this bug/hole/0day/flaw is. I don't know what it is yet, I tried to figger out the other day but they were selling it to the highest bidder...

So, to answer your question... If you use Internet Explorer, then Yes you have this bug and are vulnerable to the hack.

Like any patch, most IE users will not download it on their own. Hopefully it'll be on windows updates...

Also Mozilla and Apple are just as fast at fixing critical problems as Microsoft is, although IE's security holes are far more common. Microsoft hardly ever gets around to fixing low priority problems.

Let me rephrase the question, how do I know if someone has hacked in?

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

All your mmo accounts are suddenly wiped, and you are banned from all steam multiplayer games due to hacking.

  • MilkyMilky Member Posts: 339

Well, I mean is there a way I can tell if this malicious code is in my pc?

    Probably.

This hole / 0day in Internet Explore can be used to send "payload" onto the target's computer. The payload could be anything, EX: viruses, trojans, adware, fearware, spyware, rootkits, keyloggers etc.

Every hacker (that uses this exploit) can try anything, but it'll probably be something that they personally wrote on their own. Each one will be unique.

Apparently most hackers that found out and used this hole are only using keyloggers. All a keylogger does is hide in the background and "log" all the keystrokes that the target types. Later the keylogger sends the log to the hacker, who looks through it and sees any passwords or credit card numbers that the target typed.

If you want to see if malware is running, start with your firewall, make it block any unknown apps that try to send tpc packets out, preferably alerting you whenever it block a connection, also look through the processes on taskmanager and delete the ones that don't seem to serve a purpose. (look up each process on google first though, if you turn off the wrong one your computer will reboot) Try doing run >>> "msconfig" >>> "Startup" tab. Eliminate the ones that that you don't recognize. (Look them up on google first though, otherwise you might turn off the wrong thing and your computer will start wrong or not at all) That will prevent the virus from turning on when the computer turns on. If the virus isn't running it is harmless, but still taking up space.

If it's a rootkit though, like one of the ones that Sony Entertainment illegally made, there's no way to see if it's on your computer or not. Luckily rootkits are a kinda rare. Rootkits are all but impossible to make all by yourself. Most of them are just edited versions of Sony's ones, luckily most of those ones are disabled by some of Microsoft's security patches.
