Gamma World?

aeric67aeric67 Member UncommonPosts: 798

I haven't had a chance to read a lot yet, but I saw some screenies. Is this game going to be like Gamma World (PnP RPG from a while back)?

From what I've read from the Developers it's a combination of all the post holocaust movies from the 80s/90s; including some very good French ones.

I don't think it'll be like the old PnP Gamma World; but I think the inspiration for that game are also inspirations for this game; so I'm sure there will be similarites.

I think it'd a lot more like a merger between fallout and GW; which, IMO, has the potention to be a completely awesome game.

But, I've been all gung ho for a game before and have been sorely dissappointed when they hit market and the hype didn't measure up (or they just bait'n switched) ie shadowbane, horizons...

I for one am looking at this one and am eager for beta to begin

Some of the developers have said that post-apoc movies and games will have some influence, but they will also be using their own ideas as well. Fallout an Mad Max were mentioned at some point in one interview I believe as being influences, and I'm sure they've at least glanced at Gamma World.

You should at least know the big names in the post-apoc genre if you're going to make a post-apoc game.

yeah I checked out the site, looks good.  Fallout was one of my favorite games back in the day, and a much more limitless version with a bunch of other ppl running around would be sweet, so I hope it is alot like the fallout games

The game looks to have much potential.. I would love to see them add aspects of magic so the game has a shadow run / fallout feel. I hope we can play mutants as well heh heh.. No matter what lloks liek it will be a good one

I think the creators will be going for a more "pure" post-apocalyptic game. I don't think you'll see any magic in the game. However, it can seem like your character is magical if you find the right genetic makeup:

"To customize your character, you'll be able to modify your character's genetic makeup using vials of recombinant DNA. You can take DNA to a gene splicing facility (the architecture is similar to the spaceports found in Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided), along with other needed scientific tools, and mutate your genetic code for enhancement. Step in, a few lasers and lights, and you're done. Genetic modifications can range from cat eyes granting you improved night vision to stronger legs so you can jump higher. The game's character modification system exemplifies the team's desire to create a fantastic world based in modern science; heretofore, genetic splicing set within the game not only captures that paradigm, but it's also imaginative. The limits of genetic manipulation are virtually endless and it should be interesting to see where the team takes it. We would love to see modifications to include electric eels for bioluminescence, jellyfish to make your character opaque, canine DNA for sense of smell, sight enhancements from eagle DNA, the sense of sound from a cat, and even the venom from a snake."

From what I read at the Fallen Earth official site, it looks as if Icarus is coming up with some nice ideas of their own.  The most interesting thing I got out of reading was how they see today's techonolgy and science as a thing that can be a very helpful, good thing, but can have drastic and dangerous consequences in the future.

It is in the post-apocolyptic future (in Fallen Earth) when we will see how some of man's "bright ideas" come back to bite us in the ass.  As a result of the science and technology which was uncontrolled and allowed to be carried out without an moral checks and balances, the world of Fallen Earth will be a danngerous but very interesting place.

    I can't wait.

yeah, it's called "Futures Trending" and sci-fi writers do it all the time.

It's what makes a good story, and one that is intriguing.  The problem with the sci-fi games out there now is that they haven't done this.  They've taken what others have done and have 'crafted' it into a game.  What looks good about this game is that they're taking some trends, taking them to a disturbing conclusion, and crafting those conclusion into an environment.

I agree, it should make for a very interesting game and I am eagerly waiting it's release (heck, even beta if I'm in it).

Actually they ARE going magic...for the mutants...they have "psi" stuff.  Shadowrun was cool and all...but if I wanted magic i'd play everquest.

The use of Psi is so tired.

    This game looks tremendous!

Gamma World was my favorite RPG

Fallout was my favorite Computer RPG/Adventure

Fallout is a combination of the two and will be my favorite MMORPG!

From everything I've read and seen on the web site it will be the MMORPG I'm playing in 2006!

Um, I can't find where they've said they're going to have "psi" stuff.

And "psi" powers are different from magic. They are usually only telekinesis (moving stuff with your mind), telepathy (messages with the mind), and clairvoyance (seeing stuff in another place). Sometimes it also includes things like pyro- and electrokinesis (fire and electric powers).

Ok, I found this to somewhat back your statement up:

    J. Hettinger - Arthur C. Clarke once pointed out that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So, yes, there will be powers and abilities deployed in the game, but they're the result of technology, engineering, mutation, rather than supernatural magic per se.

This means that they will use possible advances in technology, engineering, or the human genome to create specialized powers, but they won't seem like magic.

I'm actually not a big fan of magic but I must say that the advances and genetic stuff they want to put into the game are pretty cool. I just hope that the FPS style is better then what I have previously seen in these type of games.
