Ya, best to decide on yourself. I think IMO, it is the best game of all games, if you ever play any of the final fantasy games, this game is massively addictive.
you know.....why do people just post "NO, IT SUCKS, DON'T BUY IT, PIECE OF CRAP, YADDA YADDA YADDA" without giving any reason for their OPINION. Please people give us a worthy review. Pros and cons, pros and cons.
Ok, anyway, I personally say buy this game, but not the current expansion. Before you do that see if you can play a friends or a free trial. I think if you like FF then you will probably like this. If not then you will at least be able to give good constructive criticism to future MMORPG endeavors.
I'm still playing this game, but EQ2 is looking better and better every day. Ready to move on.
Pros: Great Storyline, indredible cutscenes, great music, fun battle system if a bit repetitive. Crafting is fun but requires a massive amount of gil(refer to cons) Job choice and being able to play any job at any time and keep what you've learned should be echoed by all games. I like the Graphics.
Cons: Leveling....too much like work, takes forever at higher levels, requires massive amounts of TIME. Gil(money) very tough to get, half the game is spent trying to earn money just to by the equipment you need to level and craft. Controls are just horrid, but you get used to it. Community is so so. Lots of impatient people who don't understand the words "team effort". Customization is nil. Everyone looks the same. Party system is too regimented, I sit around for hours waiting for a party because there aren't enough mages around to form one.

why? cause theres almost an unlimited amount of threads esactly like this one, and we are tired of posting the same old review for 1000th time
This game is a chore, plain and simple. It doesn't even BOTHER doing what other MMOs do, which is masking the chore aspect as much as possible to make the game appear fun. Seriously, I've played other MMORPGs that were full of problems, and I still had fun with them. This game is just horribly unbalanced. Sure, the classes and spells and monsters are functional, but I'm talking about the balance between grouping and soloing, fun and work, waiting and playing. The game is mostly grouping, work, and waiting.
When i first got ffxi it was new and wonderful. I played for about 8month's. THese are the reasons I wasn't really happy with ffxi.
1. Everyone looks the same . Bunch of clones
2. Gil was kinda a pain to get. (I was a farmer for silk , beehive chips, honey, and I also would buy cure2 spells and cure 3 spells in selbina and sell them in jeuno and bastok and windy. I had gil but never enough.
3. Lving was easy for me I didnt really have a problem finding a group or lving as much as I did with gil. Death was really harsh. The xp you just gained for thos 2hr's over grinding gone. Oops Lv down cant group with them anymore.
4. Crafting was to just too pricey.
5. The interface was kinda a pain.
6. Armor and weapons were all the same. Spells the same. So you would have a group full of clones. There wasnt any way to make youself orignal.
7. Quests were run here take this to here and go to there and kill this. And you wait and wait . Then pop. Bamb ks from someone that was running by.
8. The fact that no one would talk. I really didnt like that they didnt really have an ooc chat. The japaness players were great players. Get into a group with them and you set for hr's of xp. And they made it fun with skill chains and the magic bursts. I thought the magic bursts were freakin kewl. But you still didnt talk to them they couldnt speak english and the translater was kinda a pain.
9. Pvp is like not there. Ok it kinda is. I dont think that pvp is the biggest and best part of the game but it adds abit of fun into it. I kinda wish they had a arena or somthing that would have been kewl. But I dont think pvp would work very well when you are a blm trying to fight a monk. Mabye it would.
9.5 I didnt like the fact that the classes were so limited in what they could do. attack/voke/weapon skill. or whm heal/rest/heal/debuff or blm debuff/nuke/run pulled aggro. Oh yeah 1 casted buff whm could cast a buff called protect only good one in the game. A bard could cast in group but not outa group i dont think.

Its completely up too you. I now have a game that I cant do anything with if i wanted to go back and play around. I go back to my old mmorpg games alot and this game I cant. And with WOW and EQ2 coming out in just a few months if it was me I would wait.
nope... I was a big FF fan and then the disappointments started coming one after another... starting with 9 and getting worse further and further onwards.. by the time XI came around my interest in FF had been shattered because of how awful the game actually is. =s
really depends.. this place is a FFXI FLAME forum.. so if u wan nasty comments .. ask here.. if u go other forums.. u'll get very good comments bout the game.. the decision is really up to u.. do not listen to bastards that say nasty comments..listen to ur own heart .. and at the end of the day.. DO NOT post stupid and nasty comments abt the game here becoz there are enough comments on that
i played FFXI back in February and cancelled because of school/real life issues. A couple days ago I reactivated my account because I missed it so much. But, dont just take my advice, a lot of people seem to hate this game. To each their own. . .but if ya want my vote. . .i'd go with yes.
How in the world, can you say, that the interface is a pain? I found nothing painstaking about it. Players these days...Anyway, before you buy it, you might wanna take a long hard thought about this. Of course people can come in here, and bash the game for things THEY didn't like, but in the end, it's all up to you. You can either listen to these people here and not buy it. If you choose that route, then you could really be missing out on meeting new friends and always being able to get away from real life. Enjoy the nice calm music of Playonline, and the famous prelude of Final Fantasy. The beautiful scenary of La Thiene Plateau, the calm music of Rolanberry...and my favorite place of all....Quifm: Home of the Behemoth. Or you could buy the game, and not only gain friends and have fun, but you'll also face the jackasses, bots, and some sucky players, that plague good ol Vana'diel. The choice is yours.

I'll second whoever said that the interface is screwed up. It has the most cumbersome, unconventional interface of any mmo that I have ever played. It is even worse than Everquest's ORIGINAL interface. =P
While I think its a poor way to choose a game, you just asked for a a yes no so there it is. If you want a bit more info from my opinion then:
-Poor interface.
-worst opponent variety of any mmorpg I have ever played.
-the class change and secondary class system sounded great and is neat for variety but mostly it just broke up friends that like to play together and groups in general.
-creating it to run on both PC and PS2 ended up with some very grainy sub par graphics for a PC mmorpg.

If you had the patience to decypher that, then you probably have the patience to play FF:XI. It was a good game, but only if you have the time to REALLY dedicate towards playing it and are good with teamwork. There wasn't anything really "wrong" with the game, but the leveling difficulty, learning curve, and time needed to play was a tad higher than most I've played.
Answer: No

If you have a couple hours you can set aside on the weekends
(4-7)
you should be able to make decent advancement in the game X)
personally, I play late at night for abour 4 hrs a night. and more on the weekend if I get the chance. In adition I got a healthy social life and stable grades/job.
If you just manage your time wisely the game is far from life-consuming.
aaaaanyway
I would say definitly get it if you like these...
- Interdependent players. - Teamwork. - Not being an all-powerful badass (Darkknight/Ninja/Samurai/Dragoon are pretty badass, but my thief can beat one in a duel if I really try.) - People (you cannot stay a social recluse in this game) - Fluff 'n stuff ( SE is always adding useful stuff but at the same time they are adding alot more fluff, very nice fluff. The holiday events stand for you to gain very little except for a useless item but they are still incredibly fun nonetheless.

Don't quite playing/paying for more than 90 days if you do buy it!
If you do, you will have to buy another copy of the game to play again.
Don't believe me? If you own the game, check page 11 in the manual middle of the page.
Wish someone would have told me about this before I bought it!
