I played AoC at release, I got a guardian up to around level 38 and then stopped.
The combat system I loved, and there was a certain style to the game that caught my eye.
Overall the only problems I had with the game was the style of the interface. It was pretty brutal, looked like something out of a 2002 game. The fact there were no good UI customizations out left my interface pretty bland, but that's not why I stopped playing. I felt like there was no point to reach end-game, like there was nothing waiting for me at the level cap. If I'm leveling a character, I don't want to have the most fun leveling, I want to participate in PvP, and raiding, or something that will keep me logging on that particularly character for more, and from what I understand that didn't exist in the game at release, does it now?
Also, is anyone else just starting new again? I feel like rolling on a higher population server, but it would be cool to roll with some other people to establish a group of friends. The main problem with these new MMOs it seems are lack of friends moving over from other games, leaving you feeling alone a lot of the time.

There is definitely PvP and Raiding...
but let me tell you something...you will enjoy any game a lot more if you don't rush it.
There is teir 1 and 2 dungeons, sieges, PvP in Kesh, a PvP consequence system, crafting, and exploring.
I have yet to play a game that didn't have some sort of endgame. Some are just more open-ended than others.

I'm not planning on rushing my character. I enjoy questing.
My biggest gripe is reaching a point where you want to do an instance, or partake in some sort of PvP and there's not a soul around to do it. How are the end-game instances? Are they zerg-like, like the earlier instances?

Yes, i definitely recommend you to try AOC again.
AOC has Improved ALOT since lunch in many ways, it is now a really fun and cool game.
They have added a hole new zone Ymir's pass lvl 55-65 and i guarantee you will love this zone, they have also added alot of new quest for lvl 20-80, revamped many dungeons, pvp-system / pvp lvls, and alot of other stuff.
In january they will lunch a new huge patch with 2 new lvl 80 dungeons and 1 new lvl 46 dungeon and alot of other stuff, really cool !
I recommend you to roll on a high pop server, if you play on EU, Fury is the nr1 pvp server, Wildsoul is nr2.
Im not sure witch PVE server has the higest pop, but choose the one that has a Recommended tag.
Anyway this game is really good and it will improve much more,
Good luck m8
Edit : Yes there is plenty of raiding and pvping / sieging on lvl 80 (max lvl). There are many good guilds recruting so im sure you will have no problem to find many new friends.

38 is a good level to be. There are quite a few early exciting places to be such Sanctum of the Burning Souls and the New Cradle of Decay currently on the test server.
There are quite a few U.I. mods out there right now. Remember when people were all zerging in the first month? It's not like that anymore, people realise there are a few more tactics involved. Raiding higher up there are plenty to do. A lot were bugged at release and now it is no where near as bad but a few / couple issues are still there but really it's just a tweaking process. Raiding as a motivation is common for lots of people and there are not a great many guilds that have done all, even today.
PvP has the consequence system now and levels. There are also Shanty towns to hang out if your a murderer and secret passages. It's kinda neat. Gear specific looks very cool and a vast improvement. PvP resources will be dropping soon in the Border Kingdoms and some change and thought has gone into this which is appreciated and anticipated by the community overall.
I have played on Cimmeria since the start and never had any trouble finding people to do things with as I progressed.
When the next patch hits the live server in a little while there will be some real treats in store.
