Eve-U is closed, and this noob ECM'er wants to L2pvp, with 3.5m SP and a griffin

My Previous Experiences with EVE:

So, I've had this eve account now for quite a while (about 6 months). From the start, I've wanted to play the ECM role in PvP, eventually in a blackbird. I've done some reading, and obviously I want to start small by gaining some experience in PvP. I have none. I've done the tutorials, I've done missions, I've done mining. I've pretty much done everything but PvP, except for one time where I went out in my Griffin with tackler, I jammed him with my racial (matched the colors up with his ship background, worked nice), but the dps didn't have enough to kill him, told me to run, I warped behind some rock, noobishly didn't get out and this guy caught up to me and blew me to pieces.

My pvp confidence and enthusiasm went to zero, not because I lost my ship, but because I felt I just wasted a lot of time and didn't really get any better, and didn't know how I could get better at becoming a bad ass ECM pilot in PvP.

But, it felt good before that guy blew me up, when he said "damn annoying ecm". That's made me want to learn to get better, because being a damn annoying ecm sounds like fun.

Where I'm at and wanting to go:

So, now comes to the point where I'm at 3.5 mil sp, mainly with a lot of EW skills and ship skills that I've tried to model after other ECM templates I've seen. I still need to get my targeting skills up though (I'm only certified Standard ECM operator, and basic Ewar operator, targeting is holding me back), so for now I just want to learn in a griffin. I've got a good, cheap (aka disposable) griffin loadout from battleclinic. I have a blackbird, and I have caldari cruiser 5 trained, but I don't even want to touch that until I've had quite a few victories as an ECM'er and feel I know what I'm doing (and have figured out how to replenish money to buy ships I lose).

The Confusion and Need for Advice on Direction:

Many have said "Go join Eve-University". Well, they've been closed for a while. Last time I checked like a month ago, they weren't accepting apps, and still aren't "due to war". What is my best choice for learning without just getting blown up left and right without learning a thing? I've seen so many options from joining a corp, looking for small gang pvp (which I have no clue where to start with "looking for"), to joining the faction pvp.

What should I be looking for at this point to go from "beginner" to "knows how it works" in PvP as this role? Obviously I'm doing my research here to minimize dying and maximize experience gaining (though I know death is part of the game).

Oh, and another thing that's been lingering in my mind. I'm inevitably going to lose ships in pvp. How do pvp'ers make up for that lost cash to buy new ships/parts? Do they all have alts auto-mining or something? I hate it when I feel like I need two accounts just to keep up.

IF you want you can give me a convo in-game my corp can help you out with learning out how to be a ECM pilot along with getting some pvp experience against some pirates.

    1) ECM pilots dont pvp alone ( you cant do much thing )
    2) if you got cruiser at lvl 5 buy a falcon asasp
    3) want a pvp corp ? easy check killboard and look for good pvp corps then make a apply

That ship is like 80m wherever I look. I could get it, but then I'd be broke after fitting it (I've only got about 100m isk atm), and would probably lose it. So that's probably quite a ways off 'till I figure out a way to generate isk since an ECM boat probably isn't very efficient at doing missions for isk.

Do people that pvp usually have a way to loot isk or parts they sell for isk that makes up for their losses? I don't want to become the next bill gates of eve, but I would like to know what's the best way to stay afloat isk-wise as a pvp'er so I don't feel like "ugh how am I gonna buy and fit another ship".

You usually have a side activity to make isk be it mining or missioning.

I really wouldn't suggest getting a falcon That s an extremely good waste of Isk till you know what your doing. A blackbird will work fine in most cases at almost a 20th of the price.

Some basic tips, First fit a very minor armor tank on your blackbird.  maybe a plate and a medium armor rep, you'll want to get out of any fight you can't win. Mids should be one sensor booster and the rest ECM. I usually suggest one Omni and one of each racial.

Then to get the most out of your Jammers you'll want to set your Autorepeat function on them to OFF. yep thats right get used to manually keying them off one at a time. You'll prevent overlap auto-fails and be able to spread your jammers over more ships. You'll have to keep on your toes though. I would suggest making sure oyu have at least one other person with you as other wise your going to end up having to run from most fights or at least not being able to tackle them to kill them.

oh and expect to die.... ALOT. good or bad you will be targeted as one of the first ships.

Regardless, ECM pilots are popular in most corps and alliances, good ECM pilot ever more so.

Same thing with logistics or any other "class" that tend to not end up on the killmail. ( This used to be the case, they changed this some time back, not sure how it works now ).

Same with dictors and to some degree heavy dictors, great risk, no reward but for the apprecaition of your friends.

And really, that is what it is all about.

Get into a corp as advised some of the people here seem to have already helped in that.

now some basics. you can read all day and "know" how to play but being able to is well not the same. the whole "dieing without learning anything" yea you will die ALOT and get that feeling to begin with ESP as an ECM pilot (you are primary 70% of the time) the first thing you will learn is when to get out and how to survive.

You said youve been reading so im sure you already have some setups to try I suggest starting with some throw away blackbirds to get your feet wet. and ignore the person who suggested you get a falcon ASAP while falcons are great ships to have they are expensive and you should only start playing with them AFTER your confident and can survive in a blackbird otherwise you'll just endup losing it.

If you don't have a gang backing you its still possible to practice run around lowsec looking for a group of reds. warp in at your range and start seeing how many you can lock down youll lose ships this way prolly get trashtalked but itll help get you some real practice on how to spread your jammers effectively and when its time to get out
