Richard Duffek has completed his preview of Jump to Lightspeed the first ever expansion for Star Wars Galaxies. Here is a sneak peek:
Spacecraft models are very nicely done as well as the various instrument panels that each ship has. You can play from either a chase-cam mode where you can see your ship, or fly it from inside, with either the instrument panel on or off. The ship models are amazing looking and easily recognizable from the films. In fact, they're almost perfect reproductions. The new ships designed solely for the game also fit very well within the Star Wars universe and look like they were always meant to be there. The laser bolts and sound effects are true to the movies and the original trilogy spacecraft models are done perfectly in JTLS. Even the little touches such as the engine glow and the air distortion streaming from the wing tips are very nicely done and serve well to add that sense of speed that makes flying that much more satisfying.
Space itself is an amazing sight to behold. Everything from the gigantic space stations orbiting the beautifully rendered planets to the nebulae and comets and asteroids are amazingly done. You could easily lose yourself for hours just flying around deep space in awe of all the beauty around you. |

My opinion is that JtL wiil appeal to the arcade players out there. The piloting is very reminiscent of the old 'Destroy the DeathStar' arcade game except with much better graphics. While the graphics are beautiful, most players will be out there to kick the living daylights out of their friends and family.
As a PvEer, I saw very little in beta as far as content. The emphasis on PvP play has driven us away from other games and now probably this one too. That is hard for a person who is a die-hard Star Wars fan and has an office filled with Star Wars mementos including the Obi-Wan Episode I talking stand-up. I can only hope that SoE keeps to its promise of controlled areas with PvP play in Everquest II rather than the all-out mayhem that ensues in most games without a dedicated non-PvP server as in Dark Age of Camelot.
I couldn't agree more.
Gaheris is the best thing that ever happened in Dark Age of Camelot. It made me come back to the game and stay because of the possibilities to play with friendly players rather than obnoxious bullies.
Every game should get such a chance to propose a similar game environment to their players. Of course, i understand that Star Wars relies mainly on the two waring factions, Alliance and Empire. But that is also supposed to be the case with DAoC with Albion, Hibernia and Midgard clashing each other. And still, it is possible to gather a group composed of a troll, an elf, a kobold and an inconnu. Realistic? Maybe not but who cares? The original concept of the game is nice, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to play in different conditions.
In the old time, around the roleplaying table, we could have an elf, a dwarf, an half-orc and a drow. And it worked. Because the only thing that matters, after all, is the pleasure of the players. No rule or "official setting" is more important than that. We play for fun. We even pay for fun. So we should be able to play as we want.
This is ROLEplaying. Not ROLLplaying.
