What do you want in a MMORPG?

      Introduction

Hi everyone! I'd first like to state that I don't want anyone randomly posting in this forum I want it to stay on topic so please respect that. This forum post is to inspire me for a first person MMORPG that I am creating on my free time. I want you to give me any large, or small idea no matter how long you have to type. I do also enjoy proper grammer (just because it's easy to read and It looks profesional) and it makes you seem smarter then everyone else that types like a noob. Try to be specific because saying things like "it can't be repetitive" and giving a few examples is helpful but still I like actual ideas. You may also suggest a name for the game because that is one thing I have not thought of. Also later I am looking into learning to create a website so I can post about this there but I need a name first. You may see me posting more here too so pay attention.

a Dragon mmo where you start out as an egg and grow in time to a massive elder dragon depending on what element you chose define its capabilitys and style.

When you defeat a player you have options to suck out his/her soul, take his/her items, show mercy and destroy his body. These actions come with rewards. Taking a soul increase your power and turns you more evil. showing mercy give you more favor to the powers which could later grant you somthing and turns you good. taking a items just takes items and you gain corruption. destroying the body just makes the dieing player waste more time reviving and is an ultimate evil. Theres more options in this type of feature but I forgat them I had this idea years ago.

Good makes your scales color lighter and grants you your good element abilitys.

Evil is the same but makes you darker and gives you your evil spells.

Growing up: Theres no levels as your dragon grows as time passes and you reach your growth check points(growth check points can be gained through crafting, walking around the world and killing other players.

Players can work together create citys or stay alone in a cave of your making gathering treasure as players pass by aka ganker lol.

This is all ive got for cool Dragon mmo take what you need from these ideas they are fresh.

Thank you for your feedback and I enjoy your detail. I am trying to focus on something a little different then playing the game as a dragon but a dragon simulation may be something in the future. I will now include dragons in the game. I think that I could them  as mounts, pets, enemies, or anything like that but I do have one idea that I think is better. I think that adding a race, (the species), called "Dracomancer" would be interesting because a dracomancer is a human and dragon mix with a dragon like look and the power to transform into a dragon. The dracomancer could be part of the "Demi-Set" which is the group of races that are a half human, half something else mix. For example a few demis would be a centuar (human/horse,) a satyr (human/goat,) and a werewolf (human/wolf). I am sorry for not being able to include all you wanted but a MMORPG involving dragons with such detail could be quite interesting. Thank you for your feedback.

Although it isn't -exactly- what you want, Istaria allows the player to be a dragon....from child to adult, extremely powerful as well, in case you didn't already know that is

I would have to say please skip on the dragons.  Everytime I see a game come out they showcase this huge dragon boss...  It's been done to death.  You can also put orcs and elves into this category.

Some ideas I think might be neat.

    1. Have a map be an actual city.  People could explore, even go visit the actual place that they live.  I'm not sure if you can do this from satellite footage but it would be pretty cool.

    2. Have many non-combat ways of gaining experience.  exploring, breaking windows, petting cats lol.  anyone can get bored of killing and we're not all evil people inside.  have "nice" things for us to do as well.  Have many random, unexpected surprises throughout your world.

    3. Make sure there is A LOT of character customization.  People get very attached to their characters and want to feel unique.  Things like when choosing a hairstyle, be able to drag the hair with your mouse to create your own look.  Make tons of armor/clothing styles to choose from and make them customizable.  like the hair, being able to manipulate certain pieces with your mouse.

    4. Have a gladiator arena where players can fight, and people can watch and bet on who will win.

    5. Have player apartments that aren't instanced.  I want to be able to take an elevator up to the 4th floor and go to 406 and knock on the door and have a chance that someone is inside that will answer.  You'd have to make a way for people to gain experience "at home" or noone would ever be there lol.

    that's about it for now.

Thank you for your feedback SinzOfMan.  I do know that elves, orcs, and dragons are like the oldest classic thing in MMORPG so I am going to keep them in but I am going to give it al lot more. For example there are many players who have orc or elf as their favorite class so I need to keep it real. This game is also going to be very different with a form of politics controlled by me. Over time which races or teams ally up or fight at war change so maybe orcs, elves, and dracomancers (human/dragon), will all eventually ally up and you can DESTROY them yourself. I'm not taking them out of the game sorry.

You're right we are not all evil so we do need something else. I guess maybe breaking windows and petting cats but other things are available. I am not sure if I should make different kinds of experience or if I should just have different ways to get it. I know that the classic concept of it all is fighting to level up so it would be difficult to figure something new out but I already have a combat system worked out to. I will ask everyone here if they have any ideas.

In depth character customization is always a must have except clicking and dragging hair is a little difficult. I am not sure if I could make that because I am learning on my own so it might take a while to get.

A gladiator arena sounds quite interesting but I will not be able to call it "gladiator" because this is a game. The best way to make that would probably to make a closing time to bet, to not show the fighters levels, and to not allow the fighters to quit after they have been bet on.

That sounds like a great idea with apartments so maybe you would be required to go to your apartment to open your bank (or storage), or you could rest there and recover your health in about 2 minutes. But I wish I could send players there when the log off but that wouldn't work because then all it would be is a NPC copy of the character so give me some ideas if you will.

Hello I have two questions right now. I mentioned in the introduction that I also need a name for the game so please suggest anything you have.  One idea I have is "Forge of Years" but other ideas are open. Please give me feedback. The second question I have is do you think I should have different ways to get experience for different skills? If not then how would I have an alternate way to gain experience because like mentioned in a previous post it does get seriously old fighting to level up.

    I like the name.

The question you posed isn't easy to answer...do you go with the tried and true method of a level system or do you go for something more unique and possibly risk only catering to a small, select audience?

As silly as this may sound to some, I've always had the thought of a Bully-like school method in a MMO, with a bit more depth and a 'base fee' of in-game money, schooling costs money after all, example:

You decide to take up smithing...smitihing, of course, is a tradeskill and there are different types...silversmith, whitesmith(or tinsmith),swordsmiths and so on.

You choose what specialty you wish to be in and then 'learn' that particular area through a mini-game, this in turn increases your character skill in field and does not guarantee that you will be able to make, let's say, a trusty new broadsword because you spent a few minutes in front of a forge.

This creates, IMHO, a sense of work and achievement on the part of the gamer...and maybe even a small touch of realism to boot, the downside is that it pretty much kills -any- instant gratification and will take much, much longer to craft even the simplest helm or dagger.

As for player experience in the field, i've always like the exploration experience so that should be put in, xp per kill is soley based on what you think should be given with perhaps a double xp bonus for chain kills or whatnot..in other words if you make the fighting more fun and/or give out xp rewards for players going that extra mile i think it'll be fine.

That's hard to vote for as i don't think that any of the races are what i would consider to be "best"....and where is the mighty Dwarf race on that list hmmmmm?

It's an interesting choice of races to play as though, a bit like Istaria with a smidge of Vanguard.

Hello you may have noticed that Maxila said he is my brother. He is! We are twins in fact. We are both going to work on this game together. Maxila and I are also going to try and become a moderator. Wish us luck!

My brother, Maxila couldn't fit all the different races we want into the poll and of course dwarf is a wonderful race so sorry about that. I am happy you like the races though. By the way for every one that doesn't know, a Naiad, (my brother spelled it "Nyad") is a human that lives under water and a Dryad, is a human, tree hybrid that cannot venture far from it's tree (not in this game) and dies as it's tree dies.

personally i would like to see a game that is more centered towards the eviler races, orcs,goblins,drow,half-orcs, demonspawn, something like that.  I am getting tired of the same old good vs. evil thing.  its time to be evil vs. good.

  • KorbyKorby Member Posts: 499

I want everything that's currently not being offered.

To the above poster, quite honestly I want to get RID of the evil vs good crap. Why not make a game with several different races that are INDEPENDENT of eachother, and only have themselves in mind? 1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1 seems much more exciting than 5v5.

I understand what your saying but we are planing on having a "Moral compass" where your actions will affect your characters appearence, and also eventually you could become famous from kindness or maybe from bounty fliers...
that will be our version of "evil Vs. good"

Indeed, who would want to be a Human,Elf,Dwarf or Orc...nobody plays as them!  it's madness I tell's ya!

What do you suggest then? Smurfs?

The selection is quite different than what is usually offered in most MMO's except for Vanguard and Istaria..and seriously if EQ2 can introduce a fairy (fey) i think Dryad and Cyclops are fine.

I'm glad you think that way and if you would like  fairies we would be more than happy to add them into our game the goal is to have every race we can think up!

So if you have any suggestions please, do tell.

Carpe Diem had fairies. They could "attatch" themselves to other players, acting almost as their pet. But you could heal and buff them, as well as attack and loot. It was a very fun class to play.

Well it's your project, you know...i do like the variety you have going on with the races but if you intend to implement them all with a fairly deep backstory they you're going have a lot of writing on your hands to be sure...and if you intend to place them all within the confines of the games story...whew...lots of work.

The only thing i can think of that would be a fresh change in MMO is making a sort of NPC guild, sort of like in Morrowind or Oblivion....a fighter working for a npc fighters guild, he/she could rest there instead of buying a house, get a dicount on arms and armor from npc vendors and so on.

This wouldn't be to relpace a PC guild, but to both allow new players to call home and have those players that don't like to join PC guilds as well

The problem is that it sounds really good in thought, but i have no idea how it would come about in a MMO.

For starters a Devloper that dosen't let the  morons and Asshats take over the game and forums  six months after release. LOTRO is the latest to fall victim to the plauge of stupidity.

I'm glad you like the name but I'm wondering if it will sound good when this game is big. (When I actually finish it). For example FInal Fantasy is a great name and so is World of Warcraft but I think that is because you hear it so much. Maybe Forge of Years will sound good like that too.

I'm not so sure what you mean by a "Bully-like school method" but if you are talking about a bullying game then Bully Scholarship Edition is a good idea. I do think charging only a base fee and not a monthly fee to play is a good idea but  is that what you meant? Please try to be clearer when explaining things please.

I decided I probably will have certain professions you can do and you get experience by doing them. I still don't know what to do about another way to get normal experience so I will figure that out later. Having a mini-game to smith is a good idea I could imagine choosing your ore (that you have in our inventor) heating the fire, pouring the molten lava and then pounding it with a hammer so I like that idea. I could do mini-games for other things to like lock picking and whatnot.

You're right it could just end up burning time but it's the kind of thing where some players love it and some hate it. (Or some strongly dislike it.) Though I  do believe that with good effort put into the mini-game most players will like it. Besides my goal is to make this game the most realistic fantasy possible right?

that exploration experience is always nice to have and I might make it like Oblivion where you have the option to teleport but you can also explore open fields and find dungeons and whatnot. I also agree that extra experience for things is nice so that can be a bonus! Oh my gosh did I just hear "bonus"? That's wonderful! Sorry I'm in a good mood right now.
