Alot of us come from strong mostly good memories, of our first really got into mmorpg, and remembered how long we stayed interested active and thought it was acatuly fun
With the newer crop we have tried we either got discusted with on going customer service, bugs, too high expections, too much hype, and out and out boredom, once we got into the higher levels of game play
In my next mmorpg i plan on changing a few things to my approach of the game
a) never read the games offical fourms to many winers
b) not get to caught up in patch notes deveolpments since a they will mean nerfage and b) to many changes
and not rush the game, take time to see the different areas and what is around which corner of the game i am at any given time
i will also take into account there is a good chance no matter what i try, may not hold my interest as long as my first mmorpg did and thats ok too, and even if i only stay a few months doesn't mean a game is a failure just not a match for me
My new approach is, if it is fun for a while play, when it gets old, or two frustrating just let it go and move on or take a break
and just like the older ones already out what the game looks like on release is not what the game will end up being a year from now
instead of looking to my next mmorpg as be all end all mmorpg i'll for sure stay 2 + years, its going to be well lets look and see and play while its fun
Above all happy gaming to all no matter which mmorpg they choose and may we all find something we have fun doing it again, and aren't we lucky to be in an age where we have so many styles/ and choices of game play ????

Well said.
After all, it's only a game.
Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.
There are advantages of both newer games, and older games.
Older Games Pros:
Older games have MASSIVE content. There have been 8 EQ1 expansions, plus all the updates that were done without expansions. There is so much content within eq1, it can keep you busy for years. Also, there are lots of good websites with info on eq1, such as allakhazam that make the game easier for people who can not play the game 24/7. With older games, class balancing is almost perfect, and there are almost no bugs.
Older Games Cons:
Older games have really crappy graphics. They have none of the newer ideas that have come out recently, less talk between devs and customers.
Newer Games Pros:
Great graphics, newer ideas in the game, and they can use all of the good ideas from previous mmos and incorporate them into their mmo. Some of the new ideas that couldn't be done in older games is Voice Over. In eq2, every npc or mob that says something, will say it with a voice, not just display text.
Newer Game Cons:
Generally they are all over hyped. They are all released buggy(ALL OF THEM). All of the imature kids flock from one new MMO to another. Less knowledge on the web. Did I say buggy? Some systems might not be able to handle the game, and last but not least, they are all released buggy.
I personally prefer both.
I have played EQ1 off and on for 3 years now(my first mmo).
I have tried DAoC, and thought it was boring, but in its defense I only got to level 6.
I played Star Wars Galaxies and loved every bit of it, till I beat the game... Yes, you can beat SWG... No MMORPG has an ending, but SWG has something close. You max out all your skill points, and then there is nothing left to do but either pvp, or delete the character and start a new one. Or, the unending quest of becomming a jedi, that is a MMO in and of itself. SWG is really fun for 3 months, then you beat the game and there is nothing else to do.
I then tried FFXI, it was fun for a bit, but once I relized that it is a super grindfest, and the game had 15 monster models, I dropped it. I was fighting Rabbits, Worms, Mandrakes, and Bumblebees at level 1. At level 10 I was fighting Rabbits, Worms, Mandrakes, and Bumblebees. At level 20 I was fighting Rabbits, Worms, Mandrakes, and Bumblebees. At level 30 I was fighting Rabbits, Worms, Mandrakes, and Bumblebees. You get the picture. Not only was it the same monster model, they enver even bothered to change the size or the color.
I beta tested Lineage II, only got to level 10, but I saw enough. Super Grind fest, and 3, I repeat 3 skills! You get to choose between your arrow special, your sword special, and your dagger special! W00t, through the entire game, those three specials just get updated. You get very few specials.
I played City of Heroes. When I first started off I thought, hey, this isn't so bad. For some reason, and I don't know why, I got tired of it quick. It seemed like a great game, I just lost interest in it. I dunno.

Also, don't go into any game with expectations. You'll only be disappointed if you do.
And the biggest thing, the thing that has kept me playing certain MMOs much longer than I should have, do not continue to play an unfun game because of friends. Friends can help ease the pain of an unfun game, but I would imagine friends would have the same effect on other things; like torture or oral surgery (practically the same).
Don't play games that aren't fun ;p

That's exactly what I'm doing. As soon as WoW hits OB I'm going to *try* to stop coming to forums.
I had tons of fun with Motor City Online, Planetside, and the first ~6 months of FFXI. After those first 6 months I started coming to forums.. and then things started to go downhill. I can't seem to get interested in any games.. I've tried almost all the released games on the forum list, and none of them interest me.
Hell, I'm barely having fun with non-MMO games.
Maybe it's not the forums.. maybe it is just that the games really are "boring" to me. Oh well, coulnd't hurt.
Now the only problem is going to be actually staying away from forums.. they are more addicting then the game in most cases.

Ya im in a similar boat... my first MMORPG (UO) was awsome, it something new (I saw the box in costco and was looking over it, i had no idea what a MMORPG was at that time). I read through the manual and i was so excited when i saw you could own houses, boats and mounts, and do anything you wanted. It was easily the best MMOG ive ever played but after that... it all went downhill. My friends were into EQ so i decided to use a free month i recieved from SOE... after haering so many great things about it I was fairly excited, but that qucikly changed. It was almost the opposite of everything i liked in UO. It had too many limits, it was extremly hard to just play by yourself and it was hard to explore, also I prefer skill based over class/level based. I tried about 4 different MMOGs after EQ, the only one that held my interest for a full month was DAoC, but it was too slow paced for me. After that i learned about UXO and was watching that game for almost a year until it was finally cancelled... since then the Only MMORPG ive played is EVE which i really enjoyed, but not one i would subscribe to yet.
As for upcoming games... the two big ones (we all know which ones those are...) just dont seem to be doing anything really exciting or new. DnL is the game im putting my money for my new favorite.
To me it seems really sad. The more time goes on, the less devs learn the lessons of the past. UO had a great mix of things and was a big hit....strangely enough it has yet to be copied. Course in all fairness, its really the upper management thinking about nothing but initial sales who screw up design.
Games either go overboard with pve/quests and forsake pvp to be something meanless like a mini game or they go overboard excluding the non pvp community like shadowbane. UO had a good mix for both kinds of players, thus it brought them together into something magical (all pre UOR of course).
Any software dev knows how painful it is to have a perfect design then have non engineering people come in and destroy your design for the sake of what they think is right......and then of course it fails and you have to go back and pick up the pieces.

Yea because going back at him was so mature. He made his opinion known and so did you. I don't believe kids affect the game either because for most games out there there is this thing called the ignore feature. It allows you to block those that bother you. You can play the game without having to worry about other people irking you. There are a ton of situations but there are also tons of solutions.
As for playing games...well I agree that the newer games have less content but I don't think that is what makes or breaks a good game. I think it is how the content is implemented and as long as the devs are on the ball all is good. I intent to play the game without powerplaying it and hope that I don't care so much that I start burning out. lol

BTW, the ignore function only works if you know they are an immature kid. I can't tell you how many times I would get in a group with someone and we would be fighting and I would see, "/ooc uber group looking for one more!" and then right after someone in my group sould say I gotta go, mom making me do homework. Then he runs over to that group and groups up with them. I know not just kids do this, but more kids do than adults. I also hate elitests. They only group with the perfect group. They will not accept a decent one, they will only join a group if it has what they consider the perfect class combinations.
BTW, this site is someplace for me to spend my time while I am bored at work/school.

While there are annoying people who may switch groups on you or some such cirumstance that is nothing to get worked up over. Maybe they didn't like being in your group and it has nothing to do with an "uber" group being in the area. Not to say there aren't those out there but there is nothing wrong with switching around groups. People have different play styles, if theirs doesn't meet their needs they should feel free to leave. I'm not sure why they would lie about it though.
