World of Warcraft: Mountains-o-Mounts

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com World of Warcraft Correspondent Robert Duckworth writes this informative article on post- Wrath of the Lich King mount collecting in Blizzard's hit MMO.

If you haven't heard it yet, here's some news. Your Albino Drake? Not so special anymore. Sure it was fun while it lasted, but it was never really that rare of a special mount. The Proto-drake mounts are harder to come by. Not to mention those drop only mounts that are based completely on luck. So what is the rarest of the rare? Yep, a new mount. Dragonhawk. It appears that two colors will be available, red and blue. There's a possibility that they are color coordinated towards faction, but hopefully they aren't. The Dragonhawk mounts look extremely unique, there's no other mount type like it in the game.

I remember helping a friend get the white tiger mount.  With that in mind, all I can say it, only a true masochist would even attempt such a thing.  Not to mention pretty much tying up most of your bank and backpack space.

Just wonder why Blizzard would waste the time to code such a mount when so very few will ever achieve it.

Actually this is a great idea, and they should make it work better by putting rare mounts in dungeons like Molten Core, etc. so that people have good reason to go back to old content, thereby waking up the first part of the game from its current cold slumber.

Also, what backpack and bank space would be taken up? All mounts now get saved to a mount/pet tab on your character. No more worries about space. Now all they need to do is make a tab for tabards and all is good.

new mounts are great..but i always thought there is a better way to make your mounts more unique. Armor drops...obviously they need no buffs or anything, but why not create armor drops for mounts if only for the idea of making everyone's mounts more unique. you can have 100 people with the same mount...but still be unique that way.   Different saddles, helms. leg shields etc. in diff colors.....make your mount as unique as your toon.  Just a thought.

So the new mount will benefit like 11 people out of 11 million.  Makes no sense to me at all.  Rare is one thing, but this is beyond extreme to the point if I saw someone with one of these I would feel sorry for them.

Actually there is a mount tab now that functions like a spell tab. so now you just learn new mounts.

How is this different from Kaplan and Chilton's business model for WoW?  Create content that only a small minority of the playerbase will ever see, it's always been that way.   This is just another example that points it out a little more clearly.

I'm very glad for these articles that describe what is needed for these Achievements, it returns me to sanity whenever I happen to consider they might possibly be interesting.

Mounts are no longer stored in your inventory or banks, they are in your spellbook now. I think Shift P accesses it.

Just make me think I've done the right thing to stopped playing 1 year or soo ago. This game is getting worse with time.

No, they're not in your spellbook either.  They're on your character screen (press "C") then go to "Pets" tab.  The pets tab lists all of your vanity pets and learned mounts.

Well, when I was 11 years old I was playing Ragnarok Online and while I was playing I thought my character had to be stronger, so I decided to get a Card, and the drop chance was something like 0.1 or 0.01 something like that.

I played a lot, I passed hours of my daily "no life" trying to get this card, and I did it and after that I sold it and got very rich and worse I change the price of the card market on the server. Well, what I can say is; if you really want something in an mmorpg, may be very hard and take long time and effort, but it is not impossible.

So, I disagree when the article says that you should wait, because it will get easier, this kind of thought is worthless! Player are complaining more and more about quests, level and many things, just because they are lazy! That is not right, people should no wait for something happens, they should go and get! If you don't move your ass and stay the entire day playing games and complain about a quest being to hard, man you're in trouble, move your ass in-game atleast!

I remember when I sold the Gold Chocobo on FFVII and I did other way to get the second gold chocobo, it was hard but I did it, I'm not proud of playing, I play for fun, but if you're to lazy and complain about something fun (and you pay for playing), my god!

I would just like to say that also in this patch, they have removed the racial requirement on mounts.  So poor Taurens, not so much anymore.

    To quote the patch notes:

Racial restrictions on mounts have now been lifted. Night elves on mechanostrider? Tauren on raptor? You’re not seeing things.

seriously, did you just say that wow has unique toons, as in the character you play?

    heh, that's funny.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Maybe Unique wasn't the right word.....but anything that allows more variety allows for more uniqueness. I'm not saying noone else will have it...obviously. but unless you are tagging along behind every single player in the realm..you don't see all the players all the time.  Just Variety...that's all i'm saying..any variety is better than none at all.

Here here!  I agree with variety.  It would be pretty hard to come up with millions of combinations to have truly unique mounts, but variety makes it look less like everyone's the same identical person.

Also, I feel bad for anyone who grinded rep faction to exalted to be able to get another race's mount.  What a slap in the face that is.

I understand how some peeps would get excited about owning several different kind of mounts

But - I agree with a previous poster.. When - O - When is Blizzard going to code cool things you can buy FOR your current mounts!!?? Cool Saddles, Saddle Blankets, Long Tassels on the Blankets, Unique Reins, with beautiful feathers on them.. etc! Especially since over all most people won't get those unique mounts, at least 'us' peepers could have the same ole' mount, but it would look pretty spiffy all 'Fancied Up'.. IMHO anyway.

I understand, we would probably have to pay thru the nose for the above, but what the hey.. it would be worth IT!!! It can't be THAT hard to code things like that into the game...

NOW.. THAT..  I would like to see

    Happy Holiday All!

I suppose this will all be great for those hard core people who have time to raid and do all that is required for this new mount achievement. What about those who don't have all that spare time? I like the idea of items and gear for our mounts. At least something that everyone could have a chance at.

After all this time I still dont get some people, they want a mount because it's rare/epic but they look like crap while ridding it or just riddiculos ,like tauren on raptor or gnome on proto-drake... sad realy.

I strongly suspect it will be BoE.

So look out for ridiculous sums being demanded on the AH for these fabulous new mounts

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

That might indeed be the issue.

Remember that your choices for your toon's appearance only recently have been expanded, with the mohawks and such.

Everything you have to render that is different is more of a cycle drain.

One of WoW's virtues is that rendering is sped up by a lot of standardization.

Reworking the models of the mounts to allow for that sort of customization might very well be something that can be done, but only with great effort.

Cool idea, but might be considered "impractical" overall.

I understand what you are saying here, but - for myself I think my idea would be fun to have on my mounts.

Besides.. How long has it been since Blizz coded in fun?? Hmmm  Lol - J/King

{Quote from original story} Another reason to wait is that originally the Ablino Drake achievement required 75 mounts, until it was realized Taurens couldn't even get that many.

    TYPO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you have so many mounts that are basically a matter of pure luck whether or not you get it (one in four bazillion chance of dropping) that you'll pretty much need to hit 100, I honestly wouldn't really be impressed with someone getting this. Rep grinding, money farming, etc for a bunch of mounts, ok. Having to run the same instance over and over and over and over just to probably not get the mount? Blech. Having to do that in a zone where you can't just run it over and over and there's a timer AND there are other people competing for the drop (IE raid mount drops)? ....no. There's a difference between intense dedication and just random luck.

No offense meant to the Feature Author, and I by no means am trying to troll, but this feature seemed extremely uninformative.

It could be summarized in like 3 points.

    - A new achievement

    - It's hard/impossible to get.

    -...

Guess i could sum it up in 2 points.

Anyone actually interested in attempting to get the achievement should check out WoWvaults guide. It will break down what you need to get such as faction and gold amount. It then lists possible additional mounts by category. Very useful.

Edit: I also realize the achievement was only on test at the time, but all the info listed above was readily available in-game at the time of original posting.
