All of the good games I've played this year did not have preorders, magazine previews or advertising. They were games that I knew nothing of until I heard about them via word of mouth or just stumbled across them so I don't really see how any of this is relevent.
Actually all the games that had lots of information available except Fallout 3 sucked big time. It seems to me that the amount pre release information and advertising that a game receives is inversly proportional to how good it will be. That's my own experience of this from the games I have played this year, which is most of them. Another exception will probably be Empire Total War hopefully.
This is the case with nearly everything. The more advertising something gets, the less the actual quality likely is. This is especially apparent in larger companies (for MMOs, read: SOE) who spend more work-hours and money on adverts than they do on design, development, and QA. Many films are this way also. But it is a tried and true concept for merchandise in any vein to advertise and advertise and then sell. If you tell people it is good, enough people are stupid enough to go for it regardless.
And to advertise in the way companies like SOE, Blizzard, and the like do is very, very costly. Aventurine simply cannot afford to do this; they have a small budget. And because they cannot afford to hype their game in this way, most large organizations that review games will not take the time to review it because they believe it will not improve their own ratings.
Quality and sales/public opinion are almost never in synch.
That said, while I really, really want a game like this, and I really hope this game does come out in January, because from their promises it sounds like exactly what I would want in a game, I find it very, very difficult to believe it will come out. I am leaning towards the idea that an engine exists, but from their track record, I find it very difficult to believe anything they say.

I only hope they hold truth to their words, because many of us and myself have been waiting for this game for many years. Honestly, I don't care if it sucks or not, I just want to get my hands on it and try it to finally end ym anxienty for it. People are saying it's a mixture between the two best games I've played (Planetside, UO) So I really can't wait to see if that holds up to it's hype.
As for the forum trolls trying to denote the game, get a grip, seriously. This game has been in Development longer or as long as Halo was back in the day (7+ years from the initial idea I think), but remember how Halo came out? (Even though xbox only) It kicked everyones ass. Anyways all these flame posts toward adventurine make me chuckle, yes their track record is as good as a thiefs promise, but they posted a official launch date, if they don't hold true to that, there will be hell to pay and not just from the consumers.

As for you neoki its true that its illegal in some countries to have false advertisement but the thing is that i think that this date isnt official... they would have to have a press release for it to be official... or was there a press release.. as far as i know john woo only interviewed them and thats kinda not official hell of a lot hope the games comes out
Yes, downtoearth, please show me something. I am dying to see something.
I am not saying that I don't think it exists. Obviously it does. I am saying that I doubt it will be out in January. Do you know why I think this? I think this because they have been saying it is "very nearly out" for a very long time. I am sure it will come out at some point; it is just difficult to believe them when they tell me when.
Also, thank you, downtoearth, for ignoring the entire point of my initial post. This point being:
Aventurine spending so little time and money on adverts means two things:
1. They don't have the capital to advertise in a competitive way when it costs millions and millions to make an impact. They are using their money to make a game.
2. Companies that spend all their time and money advertising usually have bad merchandise. Companies that spend all their time and money making the merchandise usually have fantastic merchandise.
Do you understand now? I am not trolling this game. I want this game. I want this game very much. It sounds like exactly the game I want.
Try not to get so worked up and defensive over the game. You will never change a real troll's mind in that fashion. When you get overly defensive, you make yourself sound nervous, like you don't really believe it either; you sound like you are saying that to convince yourself it is real. This is the mentality many people get when they want to believe something improbable. I get into debates with my religious friends in the same way. Of course, a good-natured and logical debate over an interesting issue is my most favourite thing in the world.

Everybody seems to be comparing the weight of this release to games such as AoC, LOTRO, and WAR. This game dosen't fall into this category, therefore will not advertise or release like those games. Every major title that came out after WoW was trying to compete with WoW and/or with eachother. They all needed to one up the last on advertising, available media, and catch phrases. And why is everybody so concerned that DF isnt releasing info and advertising like a game like AoC? That game failed as did most after WoW. Why not try taking the polar opposite route?
I think we are all so used to the way that games were released post WoW that we forgot about what it was like to see small games developed that are almost in a way meant to be small and stay small. Games that are created by niche devs for a niche fanbase.
Like somebody said before me, compare this to the underground/indie music world. Its a totally DIY perspective on things, and with that should come tons of respect and support.
I think the big concern (amongst many) and it is a legit concern, is this game isnt being made by any known company. NCSoft, EA, Blizz, SOE, Turbine. This is a new company with no proven track record and there is definitely some areas for concern with how long it has been in development and it has a very small beta...I could go on, but why ? Having said all that, I hope for all the fans this game turns out to be great. I am definitely not cheering against you or the game, I just think there are some big areas of concern I see with this product, but in one short month we will all find out what is going on. And heck, if it is great I might even sign up, somewhere down the road. I would never buy it at launch. Far too many ? marks.

I am sure both Slovenc and I can wait. I am also sure that I would not post it "all over the place." You seem to forget; I really, really want this game to succeed. I want it to have a relatively large (not so large as to attract the people from WoW that would not do well and would just whine about everything) subscription base that keeps paying them for a long time.
If you do give me proof, I will simply post in this thread something to the effect of "Downtoearth has given me the proof he mentioned, and it does prove what he said."

Ok people, even I have to agree, that nothing can be said about this game until 1/22/09 and when that day comes and DF hasn't launched, then we can all slap ourselves in the forehead and bellow a loud "DOH!" and go on with our merry selves. If DF launches, who knows, it could prove to be the most innovative and inspiring MMO on the market. However, with my history of DF and previous failed beta's, I can't help but be skeptical until launch day. Sorry fans, I have been lied to by Aventurine 3 times now about beta, so excuse me if my guard being up offends you all.

it proves hes in beta
i will not put the proof on the internet i will just say that you were right like ledious cant wait for hte proof :P
The developers have always made an effort to NOT give out any information about this game. They are playing this very close to the vest... and I do not expect for there to be any change. The best thing that they can do at this point is not tell anyone anything... because that, in itself, causes a buzz... much more so than the actual information might.
Darkfall already launched. It's "invite to buy" only.
Now this is funny...

Why should they want game mag reviewers to try their game, when they do not want to appeal to the masses that read magazine or game 'review" websites? They appeal to a different type of gamer than what you are obviously use to. This is not another overhyped shit with big IP.
I can respect that. But if they want me to fork over $50, I'd like to know a bit about the game.
Only reasonable.
Wait with me a couple or few weeks after release
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

Agreed. This is what I am planning on doing as well.
I hope this MMORPG works out as it would be a real coup for a small group of semi-pro developers to finally make a game that we want to play. I'd love to see those big companies that crap out PvE grind/mass appeal turds at outrageas costs, then you find out the features you and your mates bought it for are non-existant or only accessible to a small club **cough**AoC**cough**, get a good hard kick in the balls! If Aventurine pulls it off and brings the big boys to thier knees crying in pain as they clutch thier grion, I will personally kiss Aventurine butt at every opportunity even if I don't like the actual game!
It's just I have my doubts about the infamous Aventurine previous convictions on missing thier launch dates for the game and beta. I'm not playing an MMORPG right now as they all suck so I'm not afraid of my friends leaving me ingame to play DF. I'm waiting mostly for SGW this summer and don't really panic like some people about players trying out new games. I remember our guild getting kicked of a friends Vent server because of accusations we were stealing thier guildies from WoW to play AoC.
I'm just carrying on as usual waiting for SGW and keeping an eye on this DF business, if DF is released with a play before you pay I'd be an idiot not to try. Let's just hope that Tasos and his gang have mended thier ways and are now speaking the truth.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
Why should they want game mag reviewers to try their game, when they do not want to appeal to the masses that read magazine or game 'review" websites? They appeal to a different type of gamer than what you are obviously use to. This is not another overhyped shit with big IP.

try before you buy
Cool, so wheres the information on this? Yes since you state everyone will be able to play for free before buying and the games coming out in a month now I'd really like to see the details. Where can I download the client? Can I start Playing on the 22nd or is the free to try part gonna be delayed till after the launch? Surely they know the answers to these questions by now if the games coming out next month?
Also haven't been keeping up with DF last i heard open beta was ending in early December, So did they decide not to have a open beta after all? I mean with only 1 month left you'd figure they anounce when the open beta would be starting by now if they were gonna have one?
Firstly 1-22-08 is not an North American release date. I am not even sure which countries it releases in. I bet that release is for Atlantis, so do not expect to much info on it when it releases there.
Secondly try before you buy has only been hinted at and that was a long time ago. I have not seen any form of policy to confirm this. So dont bank on this untill they release their payment policy.
Thirdly All this talk about indies not advertising so adventurine doesnt have too is garbage. Were not asking for them to advertise the game, were asking them to show us the game instead of telling us.
Fourthly DF is a highly anticipated game so all it would take is for them to let high profile game sites in and have a look. All they have to do is send an invite and they would be there. However they just let freinds of tasos in and the reviews are picked over with a fine tooth comb by Tasos himself.
Conclusion: I still want to try DF, as it sounds fun but I will not be some idiotic customer who buys a game based on what a company says. (If in fact you have to buy first). It would take someone with more money than brains to buy this game when its released w/o any real info on it. As of right now this game has CON CON CON written all over it.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore) Now Playing: N/A Worst MMO: FFXIV Favorite MMO: FFXI
This DF is a joke thusfar. Firstly 1-22-08 is not an North American release date. I am not even sure which countries it releases in. That a European game releases in EU first shouldn't be such a big deal, Wow released in US 3 months before rest of the world. It is actually good so they can fix eventual problems that always happens when you launch. Oh, and your date was 11 months ago BTW, you mean 1-22-09.
As for the rest, do like me and wait a month after release before buying it, or in your case buy it at the US release, we will know how good the game is then, if nothing else we will know if the current fanbois still likes it or not.
And yes, they should have gamespot or someone preview it but I know some greek persons and they are stubborn as mules and make things their own way in both good and bad ways if I am allowed to stereotype.
Didn't you hear? Darkfall already launched. It's "invite to buy" only. Tasos invited about 3 million people and they all bought and are playing. He says that there's no screenshots or any kind of information from these people because they're all too busy playing and enjoying the game.

And heck, if it is great I might even sign up, somewhere down the road. I would never buy it at launch. Far too many ? marks.
i have to wait until i get home im at parents house
plus i dont know if i can trust you not to post it all over the place
I am sure both Slovenc and I can wait. I am also sure that I would not post it "all over the place." You seem to forget; I really, really want this game to succeed. I want it to have a relatively large (not so large as to attract the people from WoW that would not do well and would just whine about everything) subscription base that keeps paying them for a long time.
If you do give me proof, I will simply post in this thread something to the effect of "Downtoearth has given me the proof he mentioned, and it does prove what he said."
I really want you to be right, and I want this game to be a niche hit.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

it was???

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

try before you buy
Cool, so wheres the information on this? Yes since you state everyone will be able to play for free before buying and the games coming out in a month now I'd really like to see the details. Where can I download the client? Can I start Playing on the 22nd or is the free to try part gonna be delayed till after the launch? Surely they know the answers to these questions by now if the games coming out next month?
Also haven't been keeping up with DF last i heard open beta was ending in early December, So did they decide not to have a open beta after all? I mean with only 1 month left you'd figure they anounce when the open beta would be starting by now if they were gonna have one?
TIA
This DF is a joke thusfar.
Firstly 1-22-08 is not an North American release date. I am not even sure which countries it releases in.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Favorite MMO: FFXI
