Greetings all,
I just started reading up on this game and though I've heard much about the original Everquest, I never actually played it. I started out playing Ultima Online, moved to Dark Age of Camelot and then tried SWG, The Sims Online and Asheron's Call. I enjoyed all of the games, though some were better than others. I played UO for about three years and DAoC for about two years.
I'm just wondering if it will be hard to start out in EQII not really knowing all the background from the earlier game. I'm a roleplayer/explorer/socializer and usually like to play a character that has some reason to be in the world I'm currently playing in.
Anyway... I am definitely buying this game. It looks awesome, it sounds awesome. I read up on the Lore and am hooked.
So, do you think I'll be able to figure out what is going on or should I start doing some serious EQ history reading? And if I should, do you have any suggestions as to where to start?
Thanks to any who answer!

This is what I was reading while waiting to get into beta.

Oh, and in the first part, the history of norrath...some sections have a few links at the bottom, they actually go pretty well with the main section so don't skip them.
Wow! This looks fantastic!
Thanks so much!

Hey there...
I played the original EQ very briefly.. I couldn't get used to the UI and for some reason, at the time, whenever I went into the game it made my monitor make some really harsh sound which never occurred in any other games, so, I dropped playing EQ. Since then, I've played most of the other MMORPG's out there (AC, AC2, UO, SWG, AO, Neocron, JG, CoH, DAoC) and now I am in the EQ2 Beta.
I really haven't read up on much of the lore for the background, but I am having lots of fun in the game. There's a ton of helpful people (and of course you have your not so helpful people), but for the most part, I'm having a good time. One thing I haven't done yet in Beta is get involved in a Guild, but for retail, I think I'm definitely going to seek one out.
I think you'll be fine in EQ2 and you will definitely have lots of fun!
The game was designed with newcomers in mind. Their point of view is that you probably havent played EQ before, but if you have, thats great. It is probably a good idea to read up on the eq lore just for background, but I would imagine that its not neccesary.
Thank you both for your replies. I feel much more confident now.
I haven't played a game in about a year now. I took a long break because I got so bored.
EQII looks like it has all I'm looking for in a game. I can't wait to play it!
Thanks again for your replies.

Hello,
I'm new as well to the EQ universe...I finally got into the beta this past Friday and I LUV it!
It is pretty much like any other mmog as far as learning curve...though there is quite a bit of "history/back story" that goes with it.
This site has a very good FAQ/Info section, great for reviewing diff aspects of the game.

Wow! This looks like a great site and a great guild.
Thank you for sharing the link with me. I can't wait to dig through it some more.
What I read so far was very helpful.
Namaste!
