Okay I'm sick of EQ2 because of the station cash thing, and Vanguard is just hard to find a group for anything cause of low population, so I thought I'd check out WoW again. But I have a question.
If I play a warrior, and I don't want to switch to death knight, am I just going to get my ass kicked? I heard deathknights beat all melee classes in one on one, so if I want to play a warrior is there any point in playing this game?
Thanks

One on one ?
Why spend $15 a month on an MMORPG when you can have much more satisfaction playing the to-be released Street Fighter IV on select consoles ?
No I'm not trolling - but to me it's pointless to use just one tiny aspect of the game to justify your subscription.
I'm unsure about dps, but I know protection warriors own their faces. It could have just been they were terrible players, but that has been my experience.

As with any other class, it depends largely on the DK's talent build. For example, going up against a Blood spec you'd better have soem time on your hands lol. On the other hand, with Frost it's just a matter of getting past the first few moments of burst dps.
Play the class you want and tailor gear (potions, trinkets, etc.) to adjust to situations.

I dueled many DK with my feral druid and none beated me yet .
DKs seem about even with other melee 1v1. They pwn the ever loving shit out of a couple classes (get over here is mean as fuck to some casters) but they're otherwise good.
But honestly, if you somehow want to be a 1v1 god, roll pally. Ret>All in 1v1. Game isn't balanced for duels, never will be.

It's more about spec-on-spec than about class on class.
Blood DKs are hard for some melee classes because they have a lot of self-heals. However, if you are an MS warrior (arms), then Blood DKs are the easiest of the specs to beat.
You guys don't know how much it pisses me off that blizzard created a new tank class after I decided to never go back to Wow.
I had a prot warrior, feral Druid and Prot pally all at 70 I was an awesome tank.
Oh well.....
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
Well if your in it just to Tank then you should be fine as Prot, not only is it the best spec for Warriors anyway ........LOL. .. But Death Knights for the most part are usually pretty stupid and don't know how to tank anyway. Most groups are scared of DKs they don't know from those terrified moments when Dks do a +20Elite pull just to prove they can survive it as the group dies. PVE or anything Carebear your fine.If your returning hoping they fixed PVP you came to the WRONG expansion.Even though Prot is good .. great even, Rogues, Ret pallies and DKs are SOOOOOOOOOOO OPthat youve got entire teams of rogues and pallies just spamming stun and 2 hitting you in arena..whole teams of DKs or a mix of the 3. Arena healing? a thing of the past.... no one lives long enough for it to matter, and you said you have over 500 resilience... no problem now your res is useless. your still gonna get 2 hit killed.
PVE your fine have a blast.... PVP go play guild wars. ... hell play Rakion or Wakfu.... anything but WOW.
This
I do PUGs when I'm bored. I heal. I will go with a group that has a DK as a tank only if my hearth is off of cooldown. I think even in the hands of a skilled player, a DK is an 'average' tank. But most people playing DKs as their main are below average players. Give me a protection warrior or a Feral druid any day.

It's true, though. Almost all of the DK mains are people who for whatever reason didn't cut it with their old character and are looking for a new lease on their WoW life. It's also a terribly overpowered class, which is something that always attracts noobs and unskilled players.
Frankly having messed around with the death knight, I see it more as an OP melee DPS class than a true tank.
Well I think there are a number of reasons why people made the switch, including those you mentioned Nova: story line (great beginning area), being able to start a new character without having to start from scratch, etc. Myself, I switched from warlock (for now) mainly because I greatly enjoy the variety of actions. Sure my typical combat rotation only has 3-4 actions, but I have a number of abilities I can call upon to help manage a bad pull or getting ganked.

Hardly OP, DKs do very middling DPS, and their debuffs are balanced with their lack of raid buffs (horn of winter is the only one). They're pretty good tanks, but a little underpowered right now.
They're OPed at 58 or so, but that evens out by 70s.

I've probably run into 20+ DK 'tanks' already that didn't know that if 3 mobs attack them, 2 of them will attack me as soon as I heal them. And how many DPS DK's think because they wear plate, that it is ok for them to deathcoil secondary targets?
I honestly think that there are a lot of rogues/hunters who could never get into groups and now they rerolled as 'tanks' so they could.
I bet it's those who pull using Death Grip w/o pre-casting DnD.
I've encountered many of these.

I tend to be a very cautious healer. I don't hit the tank with a big heal early and usually wait til 85% to even start healing. The DKs I am talking about probably don't have DnD or pestilence on their hotbar. The only off-target threat they are generating are from my thorns LOL

This is coming from a resto druid with a tank spec'd DK brother
You have to be pretty damn good to tank with it, and most people spec dps blood and say "LOL IM A DK I CAN TANK W/ ANY SPEC!!!!!!!!" and it's hella hard to heal them bastards. Spec to tank, or dont. If you dont, dont try to tank, plz.

This is true, DK is not overpowered, it all evens out in the 70's. Leveling will always be easy for a DK.
People are just mad cause there are so many DK's being played right now, you can't take 2 steps in outland without tripping over one.
I got an 80 DK, I wanted to be a tank but my guild wanted me as DPS, so atm Im full epic in DPS and almoste in tank gear. And I have to say its really fun, I've never had so much fun playing a class and leveling a class like DK's.
In raid I usualy end up in top 5 in dps. So its a class that can do loads of dmg if you play it right.
And also my tanking experience with DK is only heroics and some bosses in Naxx 10man, but I absolutley love DK tanking, its very very fun, only thing atm is we take alot of spike dmg, but that will be buffed next patch with 20% more armor increse and all that with the frost aura we need to use.
So from me an experienced end game raider thats done pretty much everything as a DK. Its the best class ever and you will love it truly.
Edit: I also read that people think that people that did level a DK was people that didnt cut it with their "main character" well thats true for some DK's since they want something new, and yes the most DK's are really sucky cause they just dont put the effort in to get a good specc and do a proper rotation. But there are DK's that do end game raiding that actually know what to do, I atleast cant remember the last time I was outside top 5 in 25mans and when I was even second in a heroic in dps.
So much generalization and just simple ignorance in this thread so far, it's amazing.
Yes, every person playing a dk is a bad player; and you simply by virtue of playing any other class become more skilled and better. /sarcasm
General consensus on dk tanks is their damage intake is too spiky. It's harder to reach defense cap and etc. Blizzard is buffing frost presence, adding 2h tanking weapons and defense enchants to fix this issue and make them more viable as tanks.
"DK tankz dunt no how 2 tank! 3 mobz pack speels out catastrofey." Class been out for 2 months and people don't know all tools available to them. Warrior class has been out for 4 years and how many of them can actually tank? Right, you conviently forgot the stories about warriors at 60, 70 with no defensive stance and having no idea what multi-tanking or cc is.
To OP: Come back to WoW, spec your warrior protection and plow throught the mobs. Protection warriors are touch cookies with high hp and mitigation, all the stuns and decent dps in pvp and pve.
Just remember a tank is only as good as the healer.

Exactly ppl think their OP because they start with full blue lvl 60 + quality . So in outland they pwn pretty bad then the one in northrend are OK but nothing overpowered .
to add to the opinions:
As a holy priest who runs various Heroics almost every night with a DK as a tank, they are certainly viable in that roll. It doesn't hurt if they are defense cap'd as it makers healing a bit easier/more predictable. I also have occasion to run with Prot Warriors as tank and find that they are a little better at handling the multi-mob aggro right out the gate or picking up aggro on adds during boss fights. This is not to slight the DK, but it is one place that I see the warrior as being stronger.
That said, the difference between the DK and the Prot Warrior, both of whom I consider to be competent players, is not enough to cause a wipe or to generally cause much alarm. This opinion is all based on 5-man heroics though. I have not had occasion the a DK was a main tank in a raid. To this point, DK in raid has always been dps and main and off tank, always warriors. Others might have more experience with DK in raid though.
In a PuG however, I will agree that the number of DKs who think they can tank is greatly larger then the number that actually can. But hey, this is from the healer's perspective. It's most likely my fault anyway

I quit wow about a month and a half after BC came out so I decided to give the free trial a shot and see how the game has changed. I have a 70 war and 70 lock and now a 70 DK. After finding out on the trial you cannot level to 71 or higher I rolled a Death Knight. I will describe the DK class in two words:
Insanely Overpowered
The DK is crazy overpowered in pvp and pve. Anyone claiming otherwise either is lieing to protect the OPness or is just a terrible player and doesn't realize how ridiculous DKs are.
DK's have tons of armor w/plate as well as frost presence (60% armor boost) better than similar war with a shield on while your using a 2h or DW.
Ranged casting abilities
aoe
Plenty of dots both melee and ranged and o yeah they cvan also be used to heal you
instant selfheal on 1min cd
spell silence/interrupt on 10 sec cd
ice shackles (ranged snare) instant no cd
death grip (can pull anyone from 20 yds out to you) 35sec cd w/out skill points 25sec cd w/2skill points good luck kiting a skilled DK
Not to mention all of the other spells and abilities the class has, but the bottom line is you give all this stuff to one class and nobody can stand in front of them. As long as the player has decent skill they will be able to melt face with the DK. And as player skill goes up so does the pwnage.
Death Knights are crazy overpowered if your going to continue to play wow you better grind up a DK asap because until the nerf bat gets swung really hard you don't stand a chance.
Also, I will not be buying wotlk when the trial runs out, the game is just way to casual friendly now.
