No sirry bob I had to change that back. You're the first person I ever seen talk about Q & E movement so much. You must live in a foreign country or have an ergonomic keyboard because WASD and the arrow keys are the standard movement keys in most games. Atmost you'll see Q and E for strafe in FPS which is problably what you're referring to.
Strafing, at least here in my little foreign country, is a form of movement. Strafing isn't a method of opening a quest log.
It's not just first-person shooters. Just off the top of my head, I can name six MMOs with WASD movement that use the Q and E keys to either strafe or turn - WoW, EQ2, CoH, Ryzom, Guild Wars, and Runes of Magic. I can name one MMO with WASD movement that uses them for something else - Perfect World.
Explain to me again how Perfect World's controls are the standard, and how using Q and E as additional movement keys is bizarre and unnatural, because I'm just not seeing it.

The situation's been explained several times by a number of people. If you haven't figured it out already you're never going to =/
Oh and btw you can flip the keys around so that you can turn or strafe with keys. I never knew it was so mind blowingly difficult to hold down the right mouse to turn (another standard that's been there since around the late 90s) =/
Yeah PW is assbackwards and a cheap f2p micro machine
if you hold "w" and left click, you can move the mouse and you keep walking. If you click WAY off into the distance and hold down left and move it, same thing happens.

Yeah I learned that on my first day by accident. I was trying out different things and I ended up clicking into the distance a little and holding down left and my guy moved with the mouse. I didn't bother with it after that cause I got used to walking with the keys and clicking whenever I felt like it.
Shame some people act like their smart when it blows their mind that they have to use the mouse to turn which has been around almost since the dawn of time. And the final truth is Perfect World combines all the different movement options into one except for the movement in Runescape where you click on the map and your character moves to the spot you clicked. I think Runescape has that copyrighted or something cause I have yet to see a game to do it.
We're at a point in time where controls for games are simple and people still complain.
Yeah PW is assbackwards and a cheap f2p micro machine
Finally we agree on something.
At least they got WASD right. Pity they screwed up nearly every other key on the keyboard. But that's what happens when you take a cheap Asian grinder with click-to-move, and try to add Western-style controls onto it as an afterthought.
I've played FPS games since early 90's and I've always used home row. You have many more options to map skills/weapons near there.
d=forward
c=backwards
s=strafe left
f= strafe right
Steering done with mouse in MMO's
This is your natural hand placement on the keyboard.
now you have 123456 qwerty agh zxvb all easily reached from there. That's 19 skills you can hit on the fly without even looking (if you know how to type) And that's not counting the 3 mouse buttons I have also. I also stay away from tab/caps/shift/control/alt but that's just me so there's 5 more.
You can also hit any of those skill bindings without taking your finger off of d. (good for the faster paced mmo's where moving is key instead of just sitting there ) Once you get used to it. Just testing while I type this it's a bit harder with wsad. Plus you pinky feels like its off in oregon .
Anyways I agree that the bindings for this game need to be able to be completely remapped how the user wants them. NO game should be released to the public without that option. To many people have their own mappings that, in some cases they've used for many years and won't change.
Whoever came up with WSAD movements had down syndrom.
Your all "assbackwards" seeriously., bad controls? B for bag. not missing the "I for inventory" there. M for map. uhhh. thats pretty self-explanatory as is G for guild and most of the others. The only confussing one is "R for Skill" but there is logic to it. Seriously it's not that hard to grasp. Thing about the key your pressing for 2 seconds and logic kicks in unless you have lost all logic. It seems most people arguing either didn't take much time to figure it out, or are totally lost to everything.
You said "But that's what happens when you take a cheap Asian grinder with click-to-move, and try to add Western-style controls onto it" totally wrong though. PW is almost bigger that WoW in Asia. Not a "Cheap" grinder at all. click to move. right after talking about "WASD" movement. it's the same movement as almost every other game in existance. Have you ever seen western controls? WASD movement, m for map, g for guild, ECT ECT all the same controls.
but it has the same control almost every game in EXISTENCE has been using for years.
Oh yeah? Is there an Invert Mouse option yet?
Didn't think so.
Haven't you heard? Perfect World uses the same controls as every other game in existence, except for the controls that aren't the same, but they don't count.
I love how they go on and on about WASD, as if those are the only four keys that even matter. Mention anything else that's abnormal (which is pretty much everything else), and they cry, "That doesn't count! It uses WASD!"
Except I play eleventy hojillion other games where Q and E turn left and right (sometimes they're mapped to strafe, but I can remap them so A and D strafe, and Q and E turn).
...except that those "eleventy hojillion" other games happen to be FPS games, not MMOs. Throw a dart to pick any random f2p MMO on the list on mmorpg.com, odds are that pressing Q will bring up the Quest log.
Also, who brought up "B" for inventory ("bag")? Puhlease. I don't play those tiny handful of western pay MMOs, I play mostly asian f2p games... and practically all of them use the standard "i" for inventory. Just as "eleventy hojillion" singleplayer computer RPGs use the i-key to open your inventory. Diablo, Titan Quest to name some big examples.
-
On an unrelated note, here's another pet peeve of mine... I don't care how large WoW is, you play a fucking CHARACTER, not a "TOON". This isn't fucking Disney. Just because WoW (and now some other clones of it) fucks around with some conventions doesn't mean they're the norm.
Except I play eleventy hojillion other games where Q and E turn left and right (sometimes they're mapped to strafe, but I can remap them so A and D strafe, and Q and E turn).

Random f2p MMOs tend to suck, so if that's all you're playing, it's not surprising you're seeing limited options for movement.
If you'd followed the thread, you'd see I was referring not only to FPS games, but MMOs like World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Everquest II, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, Runes of Magic, and Guild Wars (and plenty of others I haven't played or have forgotten about), all of which use Q and E for additional movement. If you're going to borrow the movement system from FPS games, you may as well use the whole thing.
But you do have a point - cheapass f2p games tend to use an incomplete movement system, while quality MMOs have a more robust system. If I want a quality interface, I have to stick to playing quality games. Cheap games are going to have cheap controls.

I'm sorry, but you yourself are wrong. Every game you just refered is either still in development or was made in late 04 or after. I'm sorry buddy, but games existed before that. Especially the f2p MMOs.
Only thing you've proven is that they adopted Q and E to the WASD movement set almost 7 years after the fact. It's still fresh and not standard which is why only those games you named use them. Nobody has to implement an idea that is only about 3 years old.
I see you're still referring to PW as cheap. How many times do you have to be proven wrong before you quit? Do we have to pull up the financial records and look at the hundreds of millions the game made last year or the years before? Or do you just want us to let you wallow in your own naiveness?
Game play is pretty cool, has all the elements of a great MMO. This is NO control options at all... You use what key they have hardcoded No Remapping, no autotargeting "left click to move here" annoyance This would be a world class game if they decided to let people control it they way they wanted.
I agree the lack of KEY MAPPING shows the developer to be quite amateur.I have kind of got over it bothering me because those Koreans [that part of asia] seem locked in there ways and not ready to move past it.Plaus you have to factor in,they are just re hashing old game engines,and using the pre sets ,rather than code anything different.
Thing is i DID NOT see Perfect World to be that good,even with proper Key Mapping.I found it to be ho hum same old,typical F2P static buildings,with static NPC's .When is the last time you saw a Korean game with ACTUAL working movers[doors]in a game?That always have the typical NPC standing in front of a dead bulding,very weak,lazy mapping IMO anyhow.
As soon as you see the typical F2P looking game,you can bet you are going to get the A typical questing.
When i first read all the things PW offered i was very excited and jumped right in there to get the download.I am not even sure i spent more than one day and deleted it,IDK maybe it was 2/3,but it is long out of my mind now,so it for sure had nothing good that would stick in my mind.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
your not the only one.....i currently downloaded it...installed it...played it once...was utterly confused with the amount of text it gave just for the first few sections of the game for begginers.
this was just after playing atlantica online, (which focuses more on getting community together in the game, which is wahat a begginer needs)
the key mapping i thought was very mundane, nothing special...and the spread between quests and the distance to reach them are too far in my opinion. I really dont want to have to run to one town (that i have no information on), risking being killed by higher lv enemies on the way, only to have to run through the onslaught of it all over again to return to the quest giver.
the game is a little lame, and i cant see how it could have been one of the best korean/oriental MMO's, but i can only assume ALOT more stuff is implimented in the original version, and we're getting a kind of dumbed down version to port to international people.
