Something similar to the original EQ?

BwanaKuuBwanaKuu Member Posts: 146

So, I happened upon some old EQ videos (pre-luclin) videos and got really nostalgic.  I know it's far too late to go back to EQ, I'd be very far behind plus it's not the same game anymore.  But just seeing and hearing the Kelethin music made me wonder why I've never had the same feeling with another MMO.  I really felt immersed in EQ.  I've never had that feeling since.  I know there's EQ2, but I'm not sure if that's similar to what I want?

So any former EQ players know of a game similar to the old school EQ? The one up till Velious, after that it started to go downhill for me.  F2P, P2P, whatever is fine.

I thought i was the only one who felt like that. I havent found another game that can hold me like EQ did. for some reason people do not want games that force them to stay at the keyboard for too long. So games are now made to attract casual gamers as well as hard core which makes the games die out. I think they should go back to the old format.

I'm hoping Aion is going to be a new EQ or Mortal online seems promising but havent found anything yet. let me know if you do.

Unfortunately, we're in the minority and game companies want to please the majority so they can make more sales (don't really blame them).  I don't really like instanced gaming and yet that seems to be the norm now.  Sure, there were many problems with EQ in the past, but the good outweighed the bad.  Having a persistent world which you could explore.  Instancing everything makes it seem like you're playing a single player RPG in Co-Op mode.  Which is fine, but it's not the same feeling I want.

I did find something called EQEmu, which is trying to rebuild the original EQ.  I don't know how far its been developed or whether or not there are any servers and if there are many people playing on those servers, but it's worth checking out.

EQEmu is a program to set up your own Everquest server. There are definitely plenty of those types of servers around, but the last one that was going to be like old school Everquest was shut down by SoE as they heard/knew how many people would play on it.

I read somewhere that Minions of Mirth is said to be similar to Everquest. However I haven't played it personally so I can't give an opinion.

Something else you two, and others who miss the old Everquest, might be interested in is the announcement that SoE will be opening up a new server. They plan to do it in March 2009 depending on what the players want. My guess would be most people would want Pre-PoP or at least a slow progression server. There's a thread on these forums talking about it which can be found here: Finally, a new server is coming

Didn't know about that new server... Might be interesting.  I did come back when they had the progression servers open and it was fun for a bit, but it eventually just turned into a race to get to the top and unlock all the expansions.

Minions of Mirth doesn't really look that promising but I'll check it out just to see if my suspicions are right.

Well i hate to say it but WOW is a copy of EQ .Every game out there sort of copies EQ.The problem you have to realize is that it takes a giant developer to put out the content that SOE can deliver. No such giant exists, apart from WOW that does have a lot of zones,FFXI is the only other large game with a lot of content.FFXI plays quite a bit different than EQ,less graphics and again you would be way behind the majority of the player base.

I believe Runes of Magic is free,i found it sort of boring, but it uses the FFXI sub class system, that is nice, but again you will never find the complete game that SOE can deliver so,you are stuck until Square Enix or SOE delivers us another game. You could try Runes of Magic ,but i think you will be like me and think ho hum.

BTW EQ2 is pretty much Eq all over again, but there servers are really hurting.I started playing again about 8 months ago, and  i was not even on my oriignal server lol. They had merged servers and we still only had around 800 players on average, that is real bad. When i left EQ2 about 2 months ago they were talking of server merger again, they MUST do it,even still it would barely help the player base. The players seem to be like WOW players only logging on to do raids, then log off,so the game really felt dead.

One thing i can say about EQ2 however,is that it is the only game i have ever played where there can be virtually no players, but the ones that are on are willing to group up pretty much instantly, friendly easy going crowd i guess you can say.Even with the dead population i would still be playing EQ2 if not for there inept accounting staff that botched up my subscription, and i wasn't about to go begging them to fix it,so i just left it at that.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I heard about the EQ2 population and that's why I've stayed away from it.  I'll be honest, I've never tried WoW, so maybe I should give the 10-day trial a go?  I don't need to get to the top or have the best gear, as long as I can group with people even at low levels.  Does WoW still have a decent low-end population?  Or is it all about powerleveling until max level to raid/PvP

WOW is all about powerleveling to the max level, joining a guild, and raiding nonstop. And once you're happy with your equips, you go to arena, get raped, and go back to raiding until you're satisfied with yourself--rinse and repeat.

    *sigh*

I might actually try out EVE online again now that I have a better computer than can run it well.  It seems very different and complicated, but maybe it will give me that feeling of being immersed into a world (err, universe).  Plus some of the corporation stuff is very interesting.

It seems like I'm hearing things on both sides-- IS there a private server or not?

I suggest taking people's opinion on a game with a grain of salt. Read facts on what a game offers and if it sounds like you might be interested then try it. Most popular games offer a trial and if they don't then don't spend money on it because they are probably trying to hide some stuff.

Now... what I suggest for you to do is if WoW sounds like something you might be interested in then give the trial a go. Post on the WoW forums on this site or other MMO sites looking for people who are wanting to start anew. Not everyone plays WoW the way Korby thinks. Hence this person's post: Interested in starting a WoW guild FOR the player by the PLAYERS?

Korby: There are private servers for every MMO. Depending on the game they may or may not be legal. In the case of Everquest/Everquest 2 they are not legal.
