19. You have announced that Darkfall will be launching January 22nd in the European market. Will North American players be able to purchase and download the game as well?

Yes North American players will be able to purchase and download the game and play on the European server. We've had people playing the game from the West Coast, Western Canada, and for that matter Japan, Korea and Australia without problems.

Wasn't it previously stated that there would be a free trial at launch? That the game will speak for itself, and they would never ask for any money without preplaying the product?

Why isn't that mentioned here?

Technically Aventurine nor Tasos has ever promised there would be a free trial at launch.

Tasos has said they HOPE to provide a trial.  They HOPE to allow everyone to play the game for free before they buy it.

It was the well-intentioned fans that then started proclaiming the promises of a free trial at launch, and that we would all get to try it for free before we buy it.

For myself, I won't be buying it if there is no free trial or an OPEN Beta that we can try first.  Hopefully they will be able to provide both... but again, it's never technically been promised.

Oh thats so sad to hear. (pay no attention to my dancing banana)

@ OP, Yes, it was a "Hopes" comment.  I was hoping there would be a trial as well, but even if there isn't i'll still be downloading it when its released.

I wont buy it before I try it either. Id like to think I could believe what other people say about the game after release, but I get the distinct feeling that even if its a terrible game the fanbois will lie through their teeth in order to save face.

I hope they can provide a free trial too

The "play before you pay" policy was mentioned a while back but I don't think it was set in stone or anything and hasn't been spoken of since. Anxious fans claim it will happen, however free trials generally only occur about 6 months after release.

Although the fans keep proclaiming how Aventurine is different and not like the other soulless corporations. Sometimes they go overboard, as they have with the play to pay theory, and you get the impression that Aventurine aren't interested in paying thier debts. In fact sometimes I get the feeling that Aventurine will pay me to play and send around lamb kebabs everytime I make a reverse charges call to them in Greece and order one! Extra Humus for every new account you open!

So what your saying is... they shouldn't allow people to buy the game until everyone has done the free trial? Once everyone who is interested in the game says that they are done with the free trial then they will put the game on the market for purchase?

Read it again, then take the time to comprehend what it's telling you. It's certainly not saying anything about USA players not being able to try before they buy. It's just acknowledging that, as of Jan 22 both EU and USA players will be able to purchase DF to play on the EU server. Which is exactly what the question asked. Know where did it say that, between Jan 1 09 and Jan 22 09 there will be no trail or open play test of the game. Which seems to be how you understand the answer to the question.

I was wondering the same thing, even asked one of the forums here. Unfortunately there is no official information about Free Trial. And I doubt it will ever be one.

For me, I would like to try the game out. But I will never, I mean NEVER will purchase to try out the game, since Aventurine is not the company I can trust or rely on their word. Not because it is a small indy company..yadda yadda, because they have not shown any solid proof about the game or earn my trust. It seems like just by "words" they are running  a business (IMO).

I'm not going to be buying this game until I see some independent reviews either. And if that means I have to wait until after release, then so be it. But I won't be demanding absolute perfection, and I really do hope Darkfall comes through.

I don't mind downloading the game, buying it for $50 and checking out for a month.  Darkfall has piqued my interested and I'll offer some cash on the altar of experimental gaming.  If it's bad, then I'll cancel after a month.  No biggie and no hard feelings.

On the other hand, I absolutely will not tolerate the policy of developers promising major updates to prematurely released mmos to keep players subscribed.  Recent example is Funcom's Age of Conan.  I would have understood if they said it might take a few months to flesh out the content promised with release - Sorry.  Yes I might've canceled but I wouldv'e checked back later.  Now they have lost my trust and my business and I plan on steering clear of any of their future products.

From what I've read from Darkfall's official statements, I see very little "spin" and hope they continue to maintain this indy gaming level of straight talking to build trust between the player base and themselves.  We'll find out end of January 09.

Yeah there is definetly a lot of hope in this game, kinda like we all HOPE it comes out by January and how the devlopement team has a high HOPE hope they can finally keep a promise this time.

Im highly suspect of Aventurines ability to keep a steady stream of updates coming with such a small team to work with.

Off topic, is that that octopus avatar from Shining Force 2?

I find this hard to be true, I'm calling BS on this statement. If its true then prove it.

I know for certain that I myself will be trying this before I buy it; as will the good majority. And that is only if they even release in January, which is skeptical with as little information they have given on their game.

Tasos did say this, but then again he also said the game was ready to launch in 2006. Thats precisely why I dont believe a word Tasos says without concrete proof. And by concrete proof, I dont mean him having one of his friends lip synch for him.

Oh yes of course they are going to give NA a free trial and not the EUROS?If the game has no publisher boundaries, then there is no reason why they would treat either the euros or the NA's any different.TCOS had seperate publishers that is why there was a difference there, this is not the case.

If some miracle happens where by,it is super successful in europe ,there might be some publisher that wants in on the action and may provide something.

I see neither happening, there will be no free trial. There will be the early players that go off speed leveling ,and that is exactly what they will be doing.Expect the early feedback to be all positive,as speed leveling does not lend to any actual CONTENT or game play. You will have the select few that remain out ahead of everyone else, they will always provide positive feedback, the rest that may be trying to enjoy some actual game play and content, will be the players to believe.

You also cannot believe much from the early players that have a great group to hang with because they may have 6/10/12 steady friends. For the normal population, they will be relying on strangers, there feedback will be a lot more believable.

It seems to me that NO game ever estimates how much speed leveling goes on,so they tend to believe a half finished product will allow them time to finish it.This is not the case, tons of speed levelers will test the later content VERY early,so we will perhaps see after one or two weeks ,just how ready this game is.

My prediction?  if it does not have tons of mounts and raiding for elite gear, the kids will scoff it and the game is history, there packing their bags and going back to WOW RFLMAO.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

You don't have to pay a Cent or Euro and don't feel obliged to buy it either if you feel so strongly about it, However I am not sure why you and so many others carry on as if it is your god given right to try this product before you pay for it.

As for being privlaged to get and invite into beta, again from the sound of your attitude you only want to play the game and that defeats the whole reason for testing a game. You are just after a free ride and personally I hope that everyone with your attitude don't buy it or even get the opportunity to test either as you will provide not benefit to the game or the derv team.

They do not have to prove anything to anyone about thier product and they will release it when they feel fit and ready too. Even with the amount of presure they have been put under by many fans and haters alike I admire the way they have not even bothered responding. I imagine they are far too busy to even be bothered at this stage of play.

I imagine that many of the people making comments like you have will infact buy the game weahter they get to test or not, because deep inside you want to be there on day one too...

Without a free trial, I too will not even think about investing one cent in this game without seeing atleast some independant professional game reviews.

I will also be looking for early player reviews. They key about player reveiws is filtering out all the hate posts, and all the fanboy post to get a good feeling of how the average player base feels.

However if they have a free trial, ill be there jan 22nd.

    WHAT!?!?!?

dude have you had any  economics? A producer ALWAYS and I repeat ALWAYS has to prove to the consumer that their product is good enough to invest in. There is no exception to this, at least in a country that supports capitolism like the US. Maybe if your from a communist contryt that supports socialism then maybe your forced to buy from a producer. But pal when Producers make the rules were in for a bad time. Producers have to convince me and most of the free worlds populations to buy their products.

Edit: It does not matter to me if it is a game, car, computer, refrigerator, printer, jeans, shirts, TV, or anything else. If that company is boasting that they have a product with relitivly new features and they want my business then they better have a working model and show me that it works.

Would you be first in line to buy an all in one toaster/TV/microwave/dish washer from a company that wouldnt let the testers tell the public about it? especially from some company you never heard of and from a company that has no experiance making those products? I dont think so there so much stuff their that looks like a major hazard waiting to happen.

Yes i would. Well mabye not First in line but i would get it soon. Know why? cuz its a tv with a microwave and toaster! just cuz you dont know all the facts about it doesnt matter cuz it comes with a 30 day warnatee.

    edit: Take this for example

your shopping sumwhere where you notice a toaster. You then remember that you need a new toaster. So you go look at it. And you never seen this type of toaster b4(cuz you have tivo and skipped through all the comercials)and never saw the brand either but it looks like a good toaster. so you went ahead and bought it. Thats how most people will be for DF. never heard of it b4 and never saw anything about it but it looks awsome so they decide to buy it cuz its a awesome toaster:)
