MegaTen

i was looking around recently for a good game, and i stumbled across this one, its a game made by aeria games, creators of shaiya and DOMO (dream of mirror online). it goes into OB on wednesday as far as i know, and so far as i've beta'ed it, it seems to be a very decent game.

some of the main storyline of Shin Megami Tensei, (or MegaTen for short) is based off of the old video game Shin Megami Tensei, (go figure) which was around in the 1990's. it was originally on the super famicom, but later came to the GBA and playstation.

another interesting fact is shin megami tensei spawned several game ideas you may know, such as persona, devil summoner, and the digital devil series.

but now, on to MegaTen. MegaTen is based off of a post-apocalyptic tokyo, and surrounding area. the people who were left alive after the 'demon war' either grouped together in the 'homes' that were built underground, or moved into the giant tower named 'shinjuku babel', believeing that it would be the key to rebuilding tokyo.

the story starts with you, standing around, as a cutscene plays. you get the general idea that something major is going on, but you dont really understand just what until later. apparently at the time, you were going through training with a DB, (Demon Buster, you'll see alot of those in-game, and eventually become one as well.) and after hearing a distress call from home 2, you have to run out to investigate, being the closest to the scene.

thats where the walk-around part begins. they dont really tell you much, just give you a crash course and enough instruction to beat the tar out of alot of the demons there and have alot of fun, but after you get to the infamous 'boss room', bad things happen and you black out (i dont want to spoil it for you, i thought i had to FIGHT it >.>)

once you wake up next to the man that saves you, (i dont know if his name is really snakeman... or if thats what they just call him) he sees potential in you and asks you to go out and catch a pixie to save a certain demon. (again, dont want to spoil, play the game to find out!)

from there, your in the world with the rest, and you have to make your way through.

well? sounds good eh? should try it out and see for yourself!

it is pretty good, the fighting system has a very "rock, paper, scissors" feel to it, the fusion system (for creating new demons, and therefore gainig new skills for said demons) is a mini-game into itself for the collector types out there, and the story-based mission system makes it feel like a good single-player RPG,

Note, Aeria Games didn't make it, they are hosting it..the people who made the MegaTen games did. Some downsides are that there is currently no wide-screen settings, character building can be kinda repetitive in the starter dungeon (which is random gen, but has the same theme each time), and most of the interesting weapons are either drops or not available until the 20s (when levelling starts to slow to a bit of a crawl).

Still, it's addictive as hell if it snags you :)

I actually played it for a good 6 or so hours the other day.  I really tried to like it but it ended up just boring me in the end.

Movement is really slow, although it is decent with going around objects.  Combat is REALLY clunky, not really a fan of that.  Also, the art is a little outdated but you can get some neat styles sometimes based on the equipment you buy.

Also, i don't like having to control my pet so much during fights considering the key layout and format of battle.  (ie. charge fireball, charge rush on pet, unleash fireball, unleash pet rush, 1 f1 1 f1 1 f1 = annoying)

It also lacks a good bit of player interaction due to extremely low population.  But hey it just came outta closed beta anyway... or will in 2 days that is.

    I had really high hopes for this, Persona 3 FES is the omly reason my PS2 is still hooked up. 3 things killed it for me though;

    1. Not having 'standard' resolutions (I think there's a fix involving an .ini edit or reghack or something, but having to do that just to get decent graphics on a 'new' game is just wrong).
    2. The combat style is really wonky. I can't explain exactly why, it just rubbed me the wrong way.
    3. Having to pay to go into a dungeon? Come on...

If these change I'll revisit it, but for now MegaTen is in my personal 'been there, done, that, moving on' category.

Evil will always win, because Good is dumb.
