Game like Infantry Online

I just recently started playing Infantry Online, and I liked it. But, I don't want to pay for it. Is there any other games like this one, but free?

It used to be free since like 1998 but then SOE took it over and a few years later, SOE's corperate greed took over and charges everyone $7... once that happened, Infantry's population dropped almost 80% of it's playerbase...

Another reason to hate SOE IMO.

Infantry does recieve updates, though they are limited. I stopped playing like a year ago and I actually used to subscribe just to play Eol. Then I canceled when I realized all of the things coming "soon" would never appear in my lifetime.

I don't know of any other 2D action games that are as highly developed as Infantry. About the only thing close I think would be Subspace. But I don't know if it's even around anymore. Try searching around Google for it.

  • Download Continuum (used to be called Subspace, it's free).  Download a new server list and play Desert Storm.  VERY much like Infantry.  You could also play Metal Gear CTF, but IMO Desert Storm is much more fun.

Incorrect! IF you can list the name of whatever company supposivly owned Infantry before "Sony took over" then you will be partially correct.

I started playing Infantry in 2000. The game, and site, CLEARLY STATED it was in OPEN BETA. There was even a 24 hour phone number players could call to report problems, advice, and suggestions. It was a long running free Beta. And it did so recieve many updates. Vehicles, different types of vehicles, and much, much more. Also there were/are many different types of game "worlds" or servers to choose from. Each one vastly different than the others. Different maps, different rulesets, different objectives.

After EQ2 was officially announced, Sony came up with the idea of an All Access Pass. They are still deciding how it will work. It will be finalized when EQ2 is released. Even then, they can still change how the AAP works.

Infantry was ment to test the algarythems (sp?) for Planetside. Planetside IS Infantry in its final release. (With a few more features, and far, far, better graphics obviously heheh.)

There is no other online game exactly like Infantry. There IS one game that is simular - Starport. But the setting is in outter space. Just like Infantry, SP games get reset regularly after 1 side/player wins, there are different "servers"/game worlds with different objectives and rulesets, and is heavily leaning towards PvP. SP is free to download, and play. And like Infantry, the Download is a small file.

Hmmm. what would u call the station then.  I played it awhile back when it was free and i specificaly remember it saying SOE, not to mention Tanuras (there were 3 games, tanrus, infantry and cosimic rift that were basically all together through the same sign in) came with EQ's Ruins of Kunark expansion pack.

Infantry is made by the same people that made subspace... boy was it fun before soe ruined it all. They did not even start out affiliated with the soe station but eventually they did to get more exposure etc. For a time the release version was even free (versions beyond 1.0) but that didnt last as sony did decide to milk this baby cash cow dry.

As a note to a post a few up:) I wouldn't reccommend Starport unless you have lots of money to spend on in-game cash and are willing to have your charecter reset every 2 weeks.

It's also important that you be a hardcore PK or you won't like the game much.

Infantry did start with Sony.. but now it is property of sony..
you can tell by the blatant sonyfication... you know, the fact that the devs promise updates that take for ever to come and the fact the customer service blows like only Sony's could.

Sad really.. they did the same thing to EQ.

But anywho! I think I smell a niche needing to be filled. Im pretty sure sombody could develope a decent game like infantry.. in a moderate amount of time, and they would have an instatnly attracted fanbase of ex-infantry lovers.

Infantry never started with Sony... Sony bought the game from the people who made Subspace

The original poster who started this thread was asking for any other game like Infantry. Have you ever played Infantry?!? It is heavily leaning towards PvP. In fact, it is even more PvP oriented than Starport. image

unless you have lots of money to spend on in-game cash and are willing to have your charecter reset every 2 weeks.

*sigh* And guess what? Infantry also gets re-set regularly. Even more often than Starport. But just like with Starport - after 1 player and/or side wins. And you do not need real life money to spend on ingame money in order to win in Starport LOL!

But like with every MMORPG, there will always be players willing to spend real life money to get ingame items. This goes on in EVERY single online game.

It's also important that you be a hardcore PK or you won't like the game much.

Yes and? Infantry is also hardcore PvP. Again, the original poster who made this thread asked about any other game like Infantry. Have you ever played Infantry? It is one of the most hardcore online PvP games. (I especially enjoy how you can raid an enemy base and steal their vehicles and use them vs the enemy players.) PK is DIFFERENT than PvP.

      - A PKer is someone out to spoil everyone's fun. They do NOT take chances. They enjoy going after new players, and/or players they have a 99% chance of winning against. They do not try to help out other players. They do not care about helping to make the game even better.

      - A PvPer is someone who enjoys the game. They play for fun. They DO take chances. They enjoy going after any player, even if they theirselves have a chance of dying. They DO try to help out other players. They DO care about helping to make the game even better.

BTW many gamers are BOTH PvPers AND PvE/PvM. image

Last, there IS a market for PvP, and PvM, and players who like to do BOTH. image There is no market for PKers.

I've played Infantry for about 4 years now, and still do to this day. The versatility of the engine and its balance between tactics and quick reflexes make it unique among any war game around. The lack of continual updates is hardly a drawback considering that the bread and butter of this game is the league play. All of the major zones(ctf, skirmish, gravball) have an associated player-run league and are the overwhelming reason the game holds its population. What probably drives new players away the most is that they'll never experience those games since the league-playing upper tier of the population is virtually closed off to anyone who hasn't played for at least a year or two. Everyone pretty much knows everyone else, which is probably what is slowly killing the game. Without the diversity of the much larger playerbase the game used to hold, leagues begin to stagnate. When you know everyone and every squad, there are really no surprises. I'll still keep playing, hoping for the game's population to spring back eventually. I would love to see the day that the playerbase can support a league with large scale organized squad battles in the 40v40 range instead of the usual 8v8s. It would simply be glorious. (psst... think Ender's Game)

By the way, Infantry's original developer was Harmless Games.

I'm not sure what zone you are refering to and unless things have changed, I never heard of regular resets. The game was reset obviously when Sony took over. Then it was reset only once since after that if I recall correclty. I haven't played in the last 5 or 6 months but I don't think things have changed unless you know otherwise? The only reason the game "resets" is if you don't pay to play. Your stats are saved everytime for almost every zone if you subscribe.

I played during the original Harmless days (WZA#1), and during Sony. It's a classic game in my opinion. Everyone I've convinced to play first says "this is gay" but for some reason always get really into after a little while. Of coures it's getting a bit dated and most won't give it a chance now. But I log in from time to time and play the free games and it's still simple fun.

Also I remember a couple months ago a post on NMEBase that Infantry was going to be distributed some how. I was under the impression that meant as a bonus disc of some sort in upcoming SOE games. Anyone notice it in any EQ or SWG boxes or is perhaps it will be with EQII? I can always hope.

There is another Alternative. A band of people took infantry(from the time just before sony bought it and made it crap). With the orig. zones and everything and made it work again.

This is not a hoax. This is not the slander that people put out saying it's a virus and what not. I play it as often as possible. There are currently about 40 active players. We'd love it to get as big as during the times when harmless games had it. 4000+ players. http://kickme.to/infinity-zone

    It's currently called infinity-zone.

Please come and check it out. I assure you, if you are an old school person, you will enjoy this alot.

    Thanks,

I loved playing Infantry back in the Harmless day. WZA4LIFE. I played under Sony for sometime but I was eventually soured by the lack of updates and quit.

I'm skeptical of how legit this private version is since Sony legally owns and bought Infantry. How long until they catch on and start harassing you? Also I don't want to be the one to test if this really is a virus seeing as you have one post and all.

The real version of Infantry has free play Friday's now too. I recommend everyone check it out. The download is small and there is so much variaty that it offers something for everyone. http://www.infantryonline.com/

Wow devl, you thread necro.  Way to dig up a thread almost 1year old.  *hits this zombie thread with a shovel*
  • ElapsedElapsed Member UncommonPosts: 2,329

Yeah I saw that but I guess it's a better way to get noticed than making his whole post a thread by itself. Everyone would be like, WHAT IS INFANTRY?, WTF INFANTRY ISNT AN MMORPG (even though I some what question that), WHY ARE YOU POSTING HERE NO ONE PLAYS, etc.

  • theanimedudetheanimedude Member UncommonPosts: 1,610
lol yeah it really is a necro thread.... but I love to reminisce back to the high school days... sitting in the middle of a geometry class... playing infantry. I would look around, to see every student in the class playing infantry on the old EoL... god that was hilarious. You've gotta love a high scholl where we all have laptops... the possibilities were endless image

First of all. 1 post means nothing. It only means I am not active on these forums. I have been coming to mmorpg for years. I just never signed up for the forums.

Also it is not a virus. I am An IT, and ontop of that. I went through the software. It is pretty close to as it was during the harmless days, just before Sony bought it?

How long before Sony catches on? Haha Yankee's been harassing about it for a while now.

Come play, you will not regret it.

And play the "real" version. I'm sorry my friend you play an empty shell of what infantry was, in the sense that it was attempted to be corporated. I am also the webmaster of a few online sites. I would hope I would know what I am talking about.

And being a thread necro?? You can thank google for that.

Just a point of fact: Sony didn't buy out EQ. 989 Studios, which became Verant which merged into Sony to form Sony Online Entertainment, developed EverQuest with financial backing from Sony. That is why the City of Qeynos (which was the first city built in the game and the only city available to play around in during Early Beta phase 1 ;)) is simply Sony EQ spelled Backwards.

I dunno squat about infantry other than it looks like a pretty fun game. I'm glad it's on the AAP because I may get around to trying it out eventually. Did sony buy Infantry or did they provide financial backing for it's development like they did EQ?
