Have I outgrown MMOs?!

Either I'm out growing MMOs or something is totally off with the progression of this game.  I'm all for being given missions and told what to do, but not everything feels completely "there" with this game.  Don't get me wrong, I'll subscribe for a few months at least just to make sure it's just me.

The biggest thing I dislike is the quest system.  Which may be since the game does place such a large emphasis on the PvP combat.  That's not a problem with me though since I actually enjoy the PvP; however, the problem is that I find myself having a dozen or more quests at any one time.  With so many quests, I feel overwhelmed and don't want to bother completing them.  More often than not I just go PvP for XP, Renown and money.

Though I do love how Mythic got the PvP right for the most part... the only problem I have is there are too many lone wolves to make the low level PvP any fun.  I generally go into matches with about 12 people on each side, and I watch as 11 of my own team mates go out to cap the enemy flag.  This would be a great tactic if they met the enemy halfway through the map, but with multiple pathes to take that usually isn't the case.  Usually the 1 or 2 of us that stick around the flag are easy prey to the Destruction and we end up losing the easiest point to capture.

I'll probably go looking for a guild as soon as I figure out what archetype I want to follow. I'm hoping this will fix my problem in the lack of combat coordination.  Right now I'm following an Elf Melee DPS since there doesn't appear to be an asthetically pleasing warmage and the mage classes seem to have an extreme disadvantage in PvP due to their low armor and tendancy to be the first dead from Destruction onslaughts isn't much fun.  Not that the low armor is bad or anything, it just makes me not want to play a mage (which is unusual since in EVERY MMO I have ever played - I've always been mage).

In the end... I just feel like I don't really accomplish much in this game.  Since the PvP lacks the sort of teamwork I experience in Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty 4 (yes, those are FPS games, I know... but team work strategies still apply) and the grinding of previous games (no, I don't mean just WoW, I mean all games... sometimes I just enjoyed monster kill grinding).

Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.

Pve of this game is simply 1 of the worst that ive ever seen, apart from PQ. Ive never feel so boring in my life doing quests...

Pvp to me, the begining few scenerios is just bgs grinding, with no impact to the world.

The game is not what i really look for , though i do like the art directions they are taking, but either than that its not immersive enough to hold me after my free 1 month.

I may come back few months or a year later if they had more contents...

So, if you base on this game, no, i wouldnt say you have, just not the correct game.

Well I see you have played every MMO under the Sun, and to tell you the truth so have I. I think we might suffer from the old days, when MMO's were new and fresh, and we did not know what to expect around the corner. But now that we have played them all, maybe we dont have that new and fresh feeling, and I cant imagine when we might get that again. This could be the reason you feel like you are out growing MMO's. I am always switching from LOTRO, WOW, and War Hammer but I cannot seem to enjoy them like I enjoyed EQ 1 way back when. Who knows, maybe some new up and coming Dev team might make something that will bring those days back. I was hoping Vanguard would do it but alas it did not.

Take care and I wish you luck in your Journey to find that MMO you so desire!

    Fallout 3 is pretty badass.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

They really should of just ditched regular quests all together.  Lil quests that aren't quests in the ToK is one thing but the regular every day quests suck.  Sure sometimes they're funny but they should of really utilized they're PQ system better. More PQ's for a single chapter and standard quests revolve around going to those areas and completing various tasks that can only happen during the various stages would of worked better.  You'd stil see all the interesting locales but atleast the quests would be engaging and have people constantly using the PQ system instead of just grinding the INF in stage one and leaving to finish the 20 x other quests for the area.

Then with those major areas taken care of they could of actually put in the 'hidden' quests they talked about at one point making exploration a bit more enjoying then running around for TOK updates.

I feel the same way. When I was like lvl 2 I had 10 quests and had no idea where to start. So I've just been PvPing, there doesn't seem to be a balance with the PvE and PvP.

  • Its not you.

The game is put together .... peculiarly.

Things hang together in a not quite right way.  Its both the most social and anti-social MMO ever created.  Its wierd.

I feel the same way, it has made me seriously consider giving up games all together.

It's like having a pierogi with no filling, sure, the pasta tastes good, but where's the substance?

Best post ever. Seriously some people are starting to get it. Yes I like you started back even before EQ,,, I am talk 97-98 Ultima Online. No game to me compared to that. And I realize after playing many more no game will. Since then I have played quiet a few games for short periods. And for some reason since I was on a three year break from MMO's when I started WAR I have been having fun.

I look at for what it is. Its a fun rvr game, nothing more nothing less. If you want PVE, WOW has a ton to offer. People who dont like WOW, look to the list <---------------- If you cant find one game in that huge list then you have either outgrown it or are just burn out like I was and need a break from the MMO's for awhile.

What does however seem to have become a game is people who play the "Bash other MMO's on forums game" because they arent happy playing them. Havent really figured that one out yet. When I quit WAR I will put it down and walk away, they havent given me nothing to gripe about yet. As soon as they pull some sort of SOE death patch then thats a different story.

    hunh???

I only started last night on a 7-day trial and I just dont understand this comment...

All of my quests have been very easy to find, there's a tracker, it shows on the map and mini map where to go in large red areas and when you mouse over them, it tells you which quest is in that area.

I did have to ask a few questions to figure out the different "levelling" methods.

Rank (or level) where it takes general xp that you get for doing anything (pve, pq, scenarios, orvr)

Renown rank that takes renown points that you get for killing enemy players and I think for accomplishing goals in orvr (not done any yet, still only level 8)

PQ Influence of which there are 3 chapters in each of the 4 tiers, you increase these by participating in the public quests, you can get 3 different rewards at each chapter.

oRvR influence, cant comment much on this as I haven't even seen any orvr yet, still in the starter area having fun

Guild rank, cant comment on this either. Apparently guilds can "rank" up as well, not sure how or what the benefits are yet.

As for the "nothing new here" type comments. I sort of agree as I also have been around since the start of MMOs.

I'm not sure what they could do in any MMO to  give it a "new and never been done before" look...

I have to laugh at the comment that the beginning scenarios dont have an impact on the world... What the heck did you expect? Did you think your level 4 character could affect the game world in some way by winning a couple low level scenarios?

I think much of the problem these days is everyone feels like they deserve to feel like they are the major player in any game they play. These aren't single player games where you are the hero and everything depends on your actions.

Anyway, I'm not looking at War to be the holy grail of MMOs, I am having fun right now and will likely buy it this week and enjoy it for the time being, if I get bored of it, so what... I'll just pick up some other game or MMO at that time.

To me that doesn't even sound as such a strange presumption when playing a game that has advertised it's lower levels influence "spilling over" into the upper levels.

Although level 4 is probably overdoing it ^^

To the Op, In my honest opinion the start of the game pvp which is t1 lacks "Strategy". People are learning to rvr ect and thats pretty much it.

T2 starts your first keep raid. Which is fun and somewhat challenging with a warband. Again not too difficult and you could still zerg and win.

T3 is a little different. You're starting to get into the fortress raids which require two doors to break through before you get to the lord and its much bigger i guess you could say. This requires strategy as it is much more difficult then anything.

T4 is alot difficult. You start getting into the city raids. Killing the City leader ect which is difficult, eventually you will capture the city and that is fun. You can buy gear from there i believe and do that cities PQ's lol.

The game isnt fit for everyone. If you like PvP you can always try out darkfall when it comes out. Its full Loot FFA. I dont know if you like that or not. Again its personal prefrence. Also you could always go back to WoW with there pvp. hehe

I feel the same way as you, I all most made this same post yesterday except it would have been about all games that have come out resently.  Its seems MMO  have been in a backwards progress sence the frist ones, the best three mmos are UO, EQ, AC in my honest opinion.  From that point on they have been simplefied down to a single player rpg with the option to group.  They have ran away from crafting, they destroyed everything that help build a community, taken away all risk in death wether it be in pve or pvp. And I often wonder is this what people want, im only 27 am I really getting that old that im now a minorty in what  I believe it takes to make a great mmo.

I agree on the peculiarity of WAR. I canceled my subscription last night. What's weird is that I did have some fun in the game, but I am just so tired of grinding for level... and in WAR it looks like it will be  horrible grind with Reknown grind, XP grind, gear grind, and now PVE grind as well.

    - For the people who love this game - go have fun, I am not bashing it, just not my cup-o-tea.

But I will say: I sincerely hope the WAR40K developers take absolutely nothing of their game mechanics from WAR.

I've always felt that Warhammer Online was an odd beast. RvR is fun. Mythic knows full well what it's doing in that regard. However unlike Dark Age of Camelot where they gave equal attention to both PvE and RvR it seems as if PvE was simply tacted on to Warhammer Online. It is the most boring PvE I've ever played. It's not so much as frustrating which any type of play can be at times but simply boring for me. It was upon realizing that I had to stop playing after the first month. I like RvR but I don't want to do it all the time. I like the Warhammer lore since I've been reading Gotek and Felix novels and more on the universe itself. I'm a fan of game lore and story in general so as a result I like to play the PvE aspect of games. However WAR's PvE was not designed well at all. You are truly on a linear path. It's actually pointed out to you on the world map!!!

Perhaps it was the server I was on, Iron Rock I think it was, but PQ were dead outside of the first one in Tier 1 and Tier 2 on the Empire side. I didn't go past Tier 2. People were just grinding scenarios and rarely were the RvR zones active. Order was constantly out numbered by Destruction and it didn't help when a mostly Empire group went against a mostly Chaos group and only Chaos had access to a tank class. Ugh.

I've heard there were improvements and I trying to decide if I want to see how things are now. Is the Empire tank class finally in the game?

Like others no other game has allowed me to feel what I felt when I played Everquest 1. Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot came close however. Asheron's Call 2 was well on it's way to getting to that point as well due to it's story missions but it was canceled. Since then though I've gone aimlessly from game to game and nothing seems to make me stick around for more then a month or two.
